  23. This above-mentioned Patchlevel 3 of TUG! 2.0.0 *is* now available on
  24. the FTP here at Oakland University...

  26. (Oh, and Dave -- I've been saving the earlier patchlevel revisions that
  27. you've sent as well -- let me know if/when any of these older files
  28. should be removed from the directory.)

  30. I recently had the directory name "changed" to /galactic-guide (I say
  31. "changed" because it's still physically /swbaker but now there's a
  32. link to it called /galactic-guide, so it's mostly harmless now...)
  33. so when FTP'ing over here for stuff, be sure to note the change (it's
  34. finally easy to remember what directory you want!)...

  36. Also, the /guide sub-directory was changed to /theguide to more
  37. accurately denote the system it contains (the IBM program, etc).

  45. Here's the specs on getting Project Galactic-Guide materials, including:

  47.    o the alt.galactic-guide FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) info file
  48.    o article archive collections (the *.NEW files)
  49.    o The Guide! (TG!), for IBM/DOS machines
  50.    o The Unix Guide (TUG), for Unix systems
  51.    o AmiGuide, for Amiga systems
  52.    o Hitch-hiker's Guide fan club stuff (like the two THHG/Star Trek cross-
  53.        over scripts, plus gif images and other fun stuff).

  58. 1) Connect to Oakland University's Vela system:

  64.    the lexical address, and need the numeric ID instead...)

  89.         and other important Project Galactic-Guide stuff.

  93.         This sub-directory contains The Guide!-specific files (this is the
  94.         article reader system for DOS-based systems, like IBM's and
  95.         compatibles).  In this directory, you'll find the .ZIP file, the
  96.         uuencoded version of the .ZIP file, icons for use with OS/2, and
  97.         other support and dox files.

  101.         This is the sub-directory containing The Unix Guide (TUG), code,
  102.         dox, and support information.  A new pre-alpha release of TUG
  103.         (version 2.0) is now available!

  107.         This is where you'll find article-reader programs for the Amiga
  108.         computer systems.  Currently, we have AmiGuide, a recent addition
  109.         to Project Galactic-Guide.  Both the .LHA archive and the
  110.         uuencoded version of the .LHA file are available here.

  114.         Here's where you'll find all the general Hitch-hiker's Guide fan
  115.         stuff.  In here is the "complete" index of almost every topic in
  116.         the first four books (called THHG.IDX), the two THHG/Star Trek
  117.         cross-over scripts, gif pictures, and more!  Again, I'll keep
  118.         adding to this as I discover more cool files, gifs, lists, etc.

  122.    Once you're in the desired directory, display a file listing:

  127. 4) Be sure you're in binary mode: a lot of folks have been writing and
  128.         complaining of corrupt .ZIP files, etc... it's because they're
  129.         trying to get the binary file in ASCII mode (which is the default).
  130.         You only need to type this once, but you MUST type this EVERY TIME
  131.         you login to the system.

  135.    ALWAYS TYPE [ binary ] BEFORE YOU [ get ... ] ANYTHING!!!

  138. 5) Get the file(s) you want:

  142.    Note that you can always change into another directory (detailed
  143.    above) and get more stuff if you want.
