- Hello folks --
-
- This above-mentioned Patchlevel 3 of TUG! 2.0.0 *is* now available on
- the FTP here at Oakland University...
-
- (Oh, and Dave -- I've been saving the earlier patchlevel revisions that
- you've sent as well -- let me know if/when any of these older files
- should be removed from the directory.)
-
- I recently had the directory name "changed" to /galactic-guide (I say
- "changed" because it's still physically /swbaker but now there's a
- link to it called /galactic-guide, so it's mostly harmless now...)
- so when FTP'ing over here for stuff, be sure to note the change (it's
- finally easy to remember what directory you want!)...
-
- Also, the /guide sub-directory was changed to /theguide to more
- accurately denote the system it contains (the IBM program, etc).
-
- Here's the updated FTP information --

-
- INFO ON "THE" FTP SITE --
-
- Here's the specs on getting Project Galactic-Guide materials, including:
-
- o the alt.galactic-guide FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) info file
- o article archive collections (the *.NEW files)
- o The Guide! (TG!), for IBM/DOS machines
- o The Unix Guide (TUG), for Unix systems
- o AmiGuide, for Amiga systems
- o Hitch-hiker's Guide fan club stuff (like the two THHG/Star Trek cross-
- over scripts, plus gif images and other fun stuff).
-
- from your favorite ultrix or vax/vms system (assuming you're on-line, etc):
-
-
- 1) Connect to Oakland University's Vela system:
-
- Lexical: [ ftp vela.acs.oakland.edu ]
- Numeric: [ ftp 141.210.10.2 ]
-
- (you only need to use one of these methods; some people can't use
- the lexical address, and need the numeric ID instead...)
-
-
- 2) If you can't connect, then email me your email address and what you want,
- and I'll send it to you (ie, the uuencoded versions of the .ZIP
- files, and/or the article archive files, etc).
-
- else login to the system:
-
- Syntax: [ login anonymous ]
-
- and then use your email addr for passwd.
-
-
- 3) Go to the desired directory:
-
- Syntax: [ cd directory ]
-
- The following directories are available:
-
- /pub/galactic-guide
-
- The root directory contains the general, alt.galactic-guide files
- (like the alt.g-g FAQ list, the article archive *.NEW files, etc).
- This is the place to look for the latest and greatest in articles
- and other important Project Galactic-Guide stuff.
-
- /pub/galactic-guide/theguide
-
- This sub-directory contains The Guide!-specific files (this is the
- article reader system for DOS-based systems, like IBM's and
- compatibles). In this directory, you'll find the .ZIP file, the
- uuencoded version of the .ZIP file, icons for use with OS/2, and
- other support and dox files.
-
- /pub/galactic-guide/tug
-
- This is the sub-directory containing The Unix Guide (TUG), code,
- dox, and support information. A new pre-alpha release of TUG
- (version 2.0) is now available!
-
- /pub/galactic-guide/amiguide
-
- This is where you'll find article-reader programs for the Amiga
- computer systems. Currently, we have AmiGuide, a recent addition
- to Project Galactic-Guide. Both the .LHA archive and the
- uuencoded version of the .LHA file are available here.
-
- /pub/galactic-guide/fan
-
- Here's where you'll find all the general Hitch-hiker's Guide fan
- stuff. In here is the "complete" index of almost every topic in
- the first four books (called THHG.IDX), the two THHG/Star Trek
- cross-over scripts, gif pictures, and more! Again, I'll keep
- adding to this as I discover more cool files, gifs, lists, etc.
- (Anybody have anything to add to the "library"?)
-
-
- Once you're in the desired directory, display a file listing:
-
- Syntax: [ dir ]
-
-
- 4) Be sure you're in binary mode: a lot of folks have been writing and
- complaining of corrupt .ZIP files, etc... it's because they're
- trying to get the binary file in ASCII mode (which is the default).
- You only need to type this once, but you MUST type this EVERY TIME
- you login to the system.
-
- Syntax: [ binary ]
-
- ALWAYS TYPE [ binary ] BEFORE YOU [ get ... ] ANYTHING!!!
-
-
- 5) Get the file(s) you want:
-
- Syntax: [ get filename.extension(s) ]
-
- Note that you can always change into another directory (detailed
- above) and get more stuff if you want.
-
- 6) When you're satisfied, logoff the system:
-
- Syntax: [ bye ]
-
