- There was a BESM-6 in NII (Scientific and Research Inrtitute)
- "Delta" installed right under the IC shop. Someday a pipe with
- fluoric acid (? -- HF) burst and the concentrated acid poured
- all over CPU and memory. Somehow the machine was revived soon.
-
- I saw a machine drowned in sewage. Somehow nobody put hands on
- it to clean up and repair, though it is understandable :-)
-
- Another horror story -- i worked in an institute which had
- Nairi 3.2; this machine was actually sawed in tho halves by
- a cargo team because it was the only way to move it into
- building! After connecting wires back and securing cabinet rails
- it worked. The same intitute had a couple of SM-4 machines
- (aka PDP-11/40) which worked routinely when the temeprature was
- over 35 degrees C (110 F) because of faulty air conditioners.
- Curiously, we had two VTA-2000 displays in the machine room --
- one made in Cuba, another in Lithuania. Guess what -- the
- Cuban one died everytime when it got hotter than 25 C (80 F).
- I thought they have warmer weather in Cuba ;-)
-
- The (un)popular CRT display (7920) for ES Ryad 1 and 2 machines
- (aka IBM/360 and IBM/370) has a "military" option which basically
- was a half-inch armor all around the device, thick metallic net
- ovet the screen and armored cover for keyboard (like on piano).
- It was rumored to be able to survive a direct hit by a round of
- AK-47 bullets.
-
- The Chernobyl controlling computer Skala continued to work and
- register data until the machine room was filled with radioactive
- water.
-
- I saw a microVAX II which was dropped from a truck. It worked
- right after it was connected.
-
- Beat it :-)
