- There was/is a machine called the Friden Flexowriter, and in at least one
- case (like the one that is currently dismantled on my workbench :-)), it
- consited of a modified electric typewriter. It worked roughly like this.
- An electric typewriter has a rubber roller under the chassis driven round
- by the motor. Pressing a key releases a snail-cam onto the roller, which
- then forces the snail cam round. Because of the shape of the snail cam,
- the mounting for it is forced away from the roler, and the resulting
- motion of the mounting operates the type hammer onto the paper. Well, in
- the Flexowriter, Each snail-cam mounting engagedd in a notched lever that
- ran under the machine. When the cam turned, this lever was moved, and
- lifted some rails, but not others, that ran across the machine. Each of
- these rails had a contact on the right hand side, and thus, the code for
- each character was generated. Receiving was much more fun. The incoming
- parallel data was fed to 8 solenoids, which controlled 8 rails running
- across the machine, under the keyboard. For each valid combiation, a
- vertical slot was formed into which another lever would fall - there was
- one such lever for every character. Then, a camshaft would pull the lever
- that had dropped into place, downwards, and then reset the mechanism. Each
- of thos levers was hooked over a key lever, so the keys actually moved
- during receive, like one of those old automatic pianos.
- Another curiosity related to those machines. There are many clutches in
- there, especially in the paper tape mechanism. They are identical in
- design to the clutches in the paper feed mechanism of the HP laserjet 1.
