  26. Quite.  He might have reconsidered later, and withdrawn the comment about
  27. atheists not being patriots or citizens.  But he didn't.  When questioned
  28. about whether he really meant it, he got the Counsel to the President to
  29. reply, saying that he stood by the comment and that he didn't think atheists
  30. should be considered as patriots or citizens.
