- In articles <CSS.92Nov9171000@tron.stx.com> and <aquilanm.721504066@helium>,
- Chris Shenton and Mark T Aquilano have both mentioned many excellent
- `minimalist' composers.
-
- (Apologies for the ambiguity in my original article (I found it in a box)),
- to rephrase it --
- >>As far as I know, Michael Nyman composed all of PG's soudtracks except
- >>for ``The Belly of an Architect''.
-
- I would be very interested to hear the early piece you (Chris) mention.
- The earliest I know of is the soundtrack to ``The Falls'' (sp?)
- which was another collaboration with PG done for one of the British TV
- companies. There are occasional showings of this work here and there.
- (Though I always seem to be busy...)
-
- As to the decay of Philip Glass's work: Do you think that ``North Star''
- was well written? In my opinion it was a precursor to his best works,
- but not nearly as well `polished'. What did you think of ``Powaqqatsi'',
- or ``Akhnaten''? I agree to some extent -- though that's not to say
- that the earlier the better. It seems to depend on what he's
- trying to write. Glass's opera/performance work seems to have peaked
- with Akhnaten, and 10000 Airplanes is a bit of a dive. Though the
- non-visually written pieces on ``Passages'' are excellent,
- and imply that he still can produce good work.
-
- It is interesting that both respondents should mention the Kronos Qt.
- They are quite a focus for `modern' music, however their most recent work
- (the african inspired pieces) I find less interesting than
- Riley/Reich/Glass/Sculthorpe/etc/etc. Perhaps I see a similar decline
- in their attack?
-
- Yes, the ``Harp of New Albion'' is a wonderful piece, as is ``Salome'',
- though I've never heard of La Monte Young. Can I prompt you for
- details?
