- I liked the Vanguard's 1988 "Phantom of the Opera" show better than in 1989.
- After watching the video of 1988 about 60 times, the 1989
- show seemed very plain (no props) and I felt that the optimum choices
- in terms of orchestration, music selection, etc. had already been made
- in 1988. Hence every change made in 1989 seemed to be for the worse.
-
- Recently I made a cassette tape of some drumcorps performances for a
- friend. I was faced with the decision of which Phantom of the Opera to
- use. Reminding myself that an "audio only" version might call for
- a new evaluation, I listened to both again. I still chose 1988.
- The 1989 version might have been technically better (after all, it
- beat my second-favorite performance of all time) but the 1988
- version just "felt better".
-
- Maybe I have a prejudice towards the first version of something I become
- familiar with. I have a tape of the Blue Devils doing Cuban Fire Suite
- in 1979, and last summer's version seemed to lack something. After
- wearing out my LP of Klemperer's version of Beethoven's Ninth, other
- versions just don't seem real.
-
- Anyway, if you were had to select one year of the Vanguard's
- Phantom of the Opera for a tape designed to impress your
- friends, which would you choose?
-
- BTW, I too was blown away by Star in 1990, but my favorite performance
- of all time was by the Vanguard, in another year in which many thought
- they should have won first place.
-
- My third posting this morning! I had better get to work now.
