  12. I liked the Vanguard's 1988 "Phantom of the Opera" show better than in 1989.
  13. After watching the video of 1988 about 60 times, the 1989
  14. show seemed very plain (no props) and I felt that the optimum choices
  15. in terms of orchestration, music selection, etc. had already been made
  16. in 1988.  Hence every change made in 1989 seemed to be for the worse.

  18. Recently I made a cassette tape of some drumcorps performances for a 
  19. friend.  I was faced with the decision of which Phantom of the Opera to
  20. use.  Reminding myself that an "audio only" version might call for 
  21. a new evaluation, I listened to both again.  I still chose 1988.
  22. The 1989 version might have been technically better (after all, it
  23. beat my second-favorite performance of all time) but the 1988
  24. version just "felt better".

  26. Maybe I have a prejudice towards the first version of something I become 
  27. familiar with.  I have a tape of the Blue Devils doing Cuban Fire Suite
  28. in 1979, and last summer's version seemed to lack something.  After
  29. wearing out my LP of Klemperer's version of Beethoven's Ninth, other
  30. versions just don't seem real.

  32. Anyway, if you were had to select one year of the Vanguard's
  33. Phantom of the Opera for a tape designed to impress your
  34. friends, which would you choose?

  36. BTW, I too was blown away by Star in 1990, but my favorite performance
  37. of all time was by the Vanguard, in another year in which many thought
  38. they should have won first place.
