- Ooooohhh!! I wanna play too!!
-
- Before I start, let's remember there's a *big* IMHO that goes along with
- all this.
-
- 1987 - Garfield - Taking an old standard and pushing it in totally new
- directions. That's innovation. (I think I've said it before, but I saw
- SCV a week or two before I saw Garfield and I had no doubt that SCV
- would win the DCI. Then I saw Garfield and I knew it was theirs to win
- or lose. Garfield almost always comes on strong late in the season, and
- 1987 was no different.) While I enjoyed SCV's show immensely, it did
- seem like standard drum corps. I really didn't see *that* much
- innovation from their 1986 production. At least not when compared to
- Garfield.
-
- 1988 - Madison - (Do we see a trend here.) Madison had everything falling
- into place at just the right time. SCV still had too much dirt in their
- show and it really wasn't as challenging as some of the other top-6
- corps. BD peaked a little early in the season so their DCI performances
- were a little stale.
-
- 1989 - SCV - Difficult music and drill, multiple tempos changes,
- wonderful phrasing and horn to percussion balance throughout. I agree
- that SCV's show had more dirt in it the PR's. But SCV's show was a
- level of difficulty above what PR was doing that year. I do think that
- PR would have had a better chance at the title with a little more meat
- in their visual production. It hadn't really changed since 1987.
-
- 1990 - Cavaliers - Cavies finally had a hornline on par with their
- wonderful guard and visual production. Everything was strong and their
- show had just the right number of emotional peaks and valleys. I think
- Star should have placed second, they really didn't have a chance to win
- because although they were technically proficient throughout, much of
- the music was dry and lifeless. They fixed this in 1991, and I think
- that was a large part of why they won.
-
- 1991 - Star - Star was just *too* strong to be denied this year,
- everything fell into place. I really thought they had it sewn up by
- mid-season.
-
- 1992 - Cadets - If finals had been on Sunday, I think we would have had
- a different champion. CBC *always* comes on strong in the late season,
- they just barely missed the mark this year. I thought Cavies seemed
- too much like the Cavies of the past few years to take the title. They
- had an (self-admitted) inconsistent guard and the hornline was
- practically non-existant for the first half of the season. (The weeks
- between POC and DCI South showed an incredible change in the Cavie
- hornline, possibly the most improvement I've *ever* seen occur during
- the season.) CBC had an incredible visual show, an impeccable guard,
- interesting music, and a wonderful overall show design.
-
- 4 out of the 6 years I agree with the judges, this could be scary.

- Bob
