- I still SCV was gyped and they should have won in 1988 and 1989 IMO. I was
- blown away by Star's show in 1990 and I was pissed when they only got 3rd.
- just my 2 cents worth..

- I saw both the '88 and '89 Vanguard shows, albeit early in the season
- and only once each, but from my paltry viewings, I found the '89 show
- much improved. I don't believe that the Vanguard deserved to win in
- '88, although I wasn't personally impressed with any of the 1988
- shows. I'm happy for Madison, though.
-
- I saw Santa Clara in 1988 at the Costa Mesa show. My overall
- impression of the show was that it was flat. There was just no
- "punch" to the show, perhaps because the corps wasn't executing very
- well. I remember being, dare I say it?, bored with the show (ouch!
- Man alive, that's heresy). I remember by contrast seeing the Blue
- Devils at the same show, and although I don't remember being too
- impressed with the overall show design, they executed the hell out of
- it. To me, they made up for a rather non-descript show with some
- incredible execution (sorry, BD fans, I like the Devils, too, but I
- just didn't care for that show too much). It was extremely clear who
- would win the show that evening.
-
- The next year I saw SCV perform again. Everything about the show
- seemed a little "brighter" to me. The show was being executed better,
- the horns seemed louder (maybe "fuller" is a better word, although you
- don't tend to think of post-1981 Vanguard horn lines as weak), the
- percussion was happening (although they weren't my favorite Ralph
- Hardimon parts, still very tasteful). The overall impression I had
- was excellent, and an obvious change from the previous year. I don't
- know what happened; maybe the writing was cleaned up (I haven't
- listened to '88 and '89 back-to-back in a couple of years, so I don't
- recall). Who knows?
-
- In any case, I think that SCV did *not* deserve to win in '88. I
- had thought the general consensus was that if anybody should've beaten
- Madison, it should have been the Blue Devils. Certainly they were
- clean enough to do it; my only problem would've been show design, but
- as I hinted at earlier, I didn't find any outstanding shows that year.
-
- I do believe that SCV earned the title in '89. That show was
- gorgeous, and so much more sophisticated than the show Phantom
- Regiment put on the field (are we going to go through this
- conversation again?).
-
- Those are my thoughts.
