- Here's my biased opinion. I played Numero Uno in '81.
- Hey, this is a great chart! It was originally recorded by
- Louie Bellson and his big band (don't remember the name of the
- album, but I can look it up if anyone cares...)
-
- Our verison is featured in Madison's 50th anniversary recording that
- came out either in '87 or '88. The opening segment (before the
- tempo picks up) was written by our horn instructor at the time,
- Chris Metzger (he was the great soloist in 70's - MacArthur Park,
- Rhaphsody in Blue, Way We Were, Somewhere,... I saw him judging
- last year).
-
- Anyway, getting back to the point, this song cooks, and it swings,
- and it has several moods (the middle slow part has an eerie feeling to it,
- with lots of textures). When we did it in '81, we kept the drum
- breaks in the same spots as Louie had 'em! Anyway, the crowd loved
- it, and I don't think they can go wrong (the ending is a "blow the
- stands down" type - or at least move them a few feet :)
-
- Can you tell I liked this song? :) :) :)
-
- On another thread... Todd Ryan's name has come up several times...
- If anyone is interested, he started in Madison - probably marched
- from '74?-'79. He stayed on a year or two and taught M&M. Great
- guy. I thought he had a good teaching style - logical, and treated
- us with respect. I always thought he'd stay in the activity.
