- My guess is that EOG is Electro-ocularo-gram or some such, ie.
- a system of transducers
- which converts eye movement into electrical signals to
- record patterns in a subject's eye movement. Such a devise
- does exist (has for a long time), and I believe that EOG would
- be the appropriate acronym.
-
- I seem to remember a posting way back in the dim and distant past
- in which this was mentioned. What happens is, the experimenter and
- subject pre-arrange an eye movement pattern (eg. look up, look right,
- look up, look down, etc.) that will act as a 'signal' from the subject
- to the experimenter to indicate that the subject has achieved lucidity.
- The experimenter follows the EOG (which would be all over the place
- during REM sleep) and tries to spot the pre-arranged 'signal' pattern
- (this scanning could presumably be automated). When the subject or
- 'dreamer' achieves lucidity, he performs the 'signal' pattern to
- alert the experimenter without leaving the dream state. My building
- up a 'vocabulary' of signals, crude communication would be possible.
- How the 'other dream characters' can use the dreamer's eye movements
- to communicate to the outside world (ie. the experimenter) is another
- question. Maybe the dreamer acts as a relay or 'medium'. I would think
- that a fairly extensive vocabulary of signals would be needed to
- achieve what we would call 'communication'.
