- cathy,
- There are four stages of sleep the fourth level being the deepest sleep or REM
- sleep. In REM sleep is where you experience dreams. But I don't think you are
- asking about dreams as much as you are wondering about the patterns of sleep.
- To have a restful nights sleep you must:
- 1 Get rid of excess tension by exercise, talking, relaxing
- 2 Go to bed around the same time every night
- 3 Get, on average, about eight hours of sleep
- Exercise should be done no less than 1 hour before bed, so as not to give you a
- "boost" of adrenaline. If you tend to goto bed at different times this will
- disrupt your sleeping patterns and give you a "jet lag" effect.
- For young children, it is recommended that they get 10 hrs. of sleep.
- Depending on the age of your daughter, you might try some of the above to
- assure her a good nights rest. Sleep deprivation occurs when a person makes
- the body perform without rest. This frequently occurs in high school and
- college students with the help of stimulants. In the deprived state, the brain
- shuts down, causing memory loss, inability to do simple tasks, moodiness, and in extreme
- cases, hallucinations are prevelant. You shouldn't have to worry about sleep
- deprivation. Your body will let you know when it's tired. For more info.,
- consult a doctor.
- About your concern with getting enough sleep after being up with a newborn, you
- should try to take naps during the day to make up for lost rest. This will
- ensure that you are getting the amount of rest you need. If you have any more
- questions or if I have not fully answered your questions, please post or e-mail
- me.
