  29. This dream doesn't sound stupid at all.  I think everyone's mother (and
  30. father) is/are really two people: A kind, caring nuturing parent, and,
  31. because there are very few saints among us, belittling, critical, harsh
  32. parent.  When we form ideas about how we and others should act in the world,
  33. we internalize our parents (let's see: kind and criticzing; mom and dad--
  34. that makes four) and they become our conscience.  Don't I recall some
  35. of the old Looney Tunes Toons with an angel (conscience) on one shoulder
  36. and devil (primitive desires) on the other?

  38. One difficulty arises when we confuse the "translations" we have made of
  39. our parents and stuffed inside our heads with our real parents--believe
  40. me, they're a lot different.

  42. One more thing, and I'll shut up.  You might want to avoid thinking about
  43. the fact that it's more acceptable to stab one's mother with a sword than
  44. with a penis, but the outcome is dreadful in both cases.
