- I can say without fear of contradiction (because I never read posts that
- contradict me) that the answer to this question is all of them, or 100%.
-
- The logic goes something like this: The universe is infinite. There are
- a number of inhabited planets in the universe. Therefore, there are an
- infinite number of inhabited planets in the universe. A certain fraction
- of these planets must be called Earth in the languages of its inhabitants.
- Because we know of one of them, this fraction cannot be zero.
-
- This is the tricky part. Because infinity divided by any number is also
- infinity, any fraction of infinity must be infinity itself. Therefore,
- the total number of inhabited planets called Earth is infinite.
-
- Finally, because the total number of planets in the universe is infinite
- and the total number of planets called Earth is infinite, all the
- inhabited planets must be called Earth.
-
- This leads to an interesting philosophical question: would there be
- life the other planets in this solar system if we had called them all
- Earth? Think about it. I'll expect a report of no less than 3000 words
- on my desktop by Monday.
