- The primary technologies that stand out are the assorted links
- in the communications infrastructure surrounding us today - portable
- phones, cheap, small videocameras, satellite technologies, Post-It notes,
- Walkmen, personal faxes, videotape, cassettes, compact disks, answering
- machines...
- Most other items fade into the background, because they seldom
- seem important to the characters ("Why yes, Sue 194K4, that is a halogen
- light source") >except< when they fail - most medical technology only
- appears when the characters are irritated by it ("Gotta change my contacts."
- "I'm sorry, we don't have a compatible organ to transplant.").
- On the other hand, it is rather fun to count all the background
- items...microwave ovens, Lycra biking & exercise wear, crash helmets,
- modern bicycles, printing all over T-shirts, remote controls, liquid
- crystal displays, the rise of plastics, Kevlar body armor...
