  20. "travelling inside" the machines is just a point of view made possible
  21. by a certain type of interface (virtual reality). since everything you
  22. see is just the icon for a program or data, the real question is what
  23. software you'd need/want.

  25. my personal choices would be:
  26. - a set of 'transport' programs that follow standard protocols. (telnet,
  27.   ftp, rlogin, etc.)
  28. - a set of information viewing utilities. (more, xview, play, or whatever
  29.   programs will let me see the dominant media of the day.)
  30. - basic editing tools. (vi, a paint program, a 3D object editor. i'm 
  31.   assuming rendering tools will be built into the cyberspace interface.)
  32. - a high level programming language to construct quick data filters from.
  33.   (perl, the "images" Daniel Keys Moran talks about in his books.)
  34. - a low level, general purpose programming language, to construct any 
  35.   other tools i might need. (C, whatever happens to be the standard 
  36.   in the future.)

  38. and lastly, a -lot- of disk storage to hold all the goodies i'll find 
  39. on my travels.
