- . . . it seems to me that the situation between the pro and anti abortion
- rights camps is analogous to two trains passing in the night; sane and
- effective discourse has broken down to the degree that the opposing
- parties do not appear to even be speaking the same language (in the sense
- that language is a medium for the communication of ideas and concepts, and
- no communication is actually taking place).
- The issue is so emotionally charged that persons are unable to argue
- from a detached (and objective-as-possible) perspective; everyone has a
- passionately promoted agenda - as is reflected in your story regarding
- the flyers. IF the two camps could agree upon such premises as (1) when
- does life begin, (2) what is the source of moral legitimization [i.e. God,
- utility, natural law, etc.], (3) is logic, opposed to rhetoric, to be made
- appeal to - then possible progress could be made and the ether could be
- cleared of the fear, mistrust, and anger on both sides of the fence. Until
- some common element is agreed upon between the two sides, however, I fear
- that the trains will continue to blindly pass each other.
