- Lynn walks out from the shadows.
-
- "This used to be a time of year I enjoyed, even if it was a bit of a
- cashectomy."
-
- An oversized calendar showing the months October, November, and
- December slides down behind her. Dates light up in neon pink as she
- mentions them.
-
- "October 22nd -- my parents' anniversary.
- November 4th -- my father's birthday.
- November 13th -- my brother's birthday.
- December 25th -- my paternal grandmother's birthday, not to mention
- my other grandparents' Christmas celebration.
- December 29th -- my paternal grandfather's birthday."
-
- All the dates except for November 13th fade to grey, and several
- others light up in a muted red.
-
- "October 14th -- my paternal grandmother died -- lung cancer -- four
- years ago. Even though she brought it on herself by
- chain smoking for most of her adult life, I still
- miss her, and I still curse out the employer who
- wouldn't let me have time off to see her before she died.
- December 6th -- my father died of colon cancer. It'll be three years.
- Dad was no saint, but he got a far worse punishment
- than I ever would've wished on him.
- December 20th -- my paternal grandfather died of colon cancer. It
- was 13 years ago, yet in some ways it seems so recent.
- It was five days before what I knew was to be my last
- Christmas, with the family planning to stop the tradition
- once my non-Jewish grandparents had died."
-
- The faded pink and red dates seem to blur into one massive bloody
- mess, but then two dates light up in bright blue.
-
- "My brother wasn't particularly fond of this trend, either, and has
- done what he could to undo the pattern.
-
- "October 31st -- my brother's wedding anniversary -- well, it WILL be
- when next year hits!
- November 28th -- a new date on my calendar -- his wife's birthday.
-
- "While I DO get bummed-out over everyone I miss, I try to find new
- things to keep me busy. Last year on December 25th, I got to live a
- fantasy of mine and do the traffic (well, just BEING on the air is
- enough!) on the #1 station in the SF Bay Area. I spent time
- babysitting the "girls down the hall" -- a pair miniature dachshunds
- Fuzzball likes to play with, visited Grand Central Starport, and I
- kept busy from 6am till 2am the next morning. Yes, it was grueling,
- but it kept my mind off what I didn't want to think about."
-
- The gold-haired woman picks up a glass.
-
- "To holidays -- past, present, and future!" <+*CRASH*+>
