  15. "I received a snail letter from Stumpy today. Our New Zealand friend's
  16. account is no more. Here are some appropriately general extracts from
  17. his letter:

  19. "I've finally got my degree out of the way - all done bar the rubber stamp.
  20. People around here keep asking me what I plan to do next year - to which I
  21. reply 'Plan? What plan?' Get the picture?

  23. "... I miss the trains. I rode more trains in that one week [in Australia]
  24. than in the rest of my life put together. The novelty was just starting
  25. to wear off when I left. Now I miss them.

  27. "... Get Mike to give you one on me - he knows I'm good for it. I'll be
  28. back... one day. See you on the flip side, Stumpy."

  30. Mike smiles and raises a questioning eyebrow as DM finishes his glass of
  31. milk. "Make it an Earl Grey tea, Mike. Thanks."

  33. DM sighs as the steaming mug is handed over. "It all just reminds me of
  34. how fast things change. It only seems a short time ago when Stumpy's
  35. last post appeared here, or even when he was visting Sydney in RL. My
  36. PhD supervisor returns from sabbatical in three weeks. I'd planned to be
  37. up to a certain stage in my research by then, and I'm rushing furiously
  38. to make it. I'm doubtful that my progress by New Year's will be quite as
  39. far as I wanted.

  41. "Time flies... all the time. I received another snail letter a couple of
  42. weeks ago - from an old pen-pal in the San Francisco Bay area (yup,
  43. pre-e-mail and all!). She is getting married in May next year. Pretty cool.
  44. And even cooler, I am seriously considering taking up the invitation to
  45. attend. :-)

  47. "Sooo... all I need are a few Bay Area Callahanians to write and convince
  48. me that I'd be missing out on some pretty hoopy fun and RealSpacing if I
  49. declined. I'll only be able to spend a week or so there (PhD, ya know?),
  50. and the wedding date is the 22nd of May. Any takers?"
