- QMC
- the Quick Mode Change utility
-
- by Ben Summers
-
- version 1.02 (30 July 1993)
-
-
- What?
- ~~~~~
- QMC installs an icon on the icon bar. This is divided into four sections.
- When one of these sections is clicked with SELECT, the screen mode will be
- changed.
-
-
- Why?
- ~~~~
- How many modes do you use?
-
- I would guess around three or four, say a 16 colour mode, a 256 colour one
- and mode 0 for speedy printing. To select one of these, you have to click
- menu on the palette icon, move the mouse to the Mode submenu arrow, and then
- select a mode from the list. If it's not on the list, you have to move the
- mouse to the bottom, and type it in.
-
- Now that's a lot of movement just to change a mode.
-
- Wouldn't it be nice if you could just click on an icon to change the mode.
- But you wouldn't want it to be a large obtrusive icon which would clutter
- your desktop would you?
-
- How about a small thin one. One which looks neat next to the palette icon.
-
- Like the one QMC uses.
-
-
- How?
- ~~~~
- Just double click on the QMC module from the desktop, or add it into your
- boot file. The icon will then appear on your iconbar.
-
- Clicking MENU on the icon will bring up the QMC control window. It has three
- control buttons, Quit, Cancel and OK, all which do the obvious thing.
-
- There are also four mode numbers, and four icons labeled 'CM'. Click on a
- mode number will change it, SELECT increases it and ADJUST decreases it.
- Clicking on 'CM' will set the mode number to the mode you are currently in.
-
- Once you have selected the modes you want, click on OK. The selections will
- now take effect and will be stored in the CMOS ram of your machine (see
- later). When ever you load QMC, these will be the modes it uses.
-
- The modes are in the same order as the sections on the QMC icon.
-
-
- Problems
- ~~~~~~~~
- If you have your mouse speed set high, you may find that it is hard being
- precise enough on the icon. I use a mouse speed of 2 which is fine for using
- QMC.
-
-
- Adding QMC to a hard disc boot file
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- If you have a hard disc, you will probably have a hard disc boot file of
- some sort. Add the full filename of the QMC module to the list of desktop
- tasks. If you are not sure how to do this, ask someone who knows (or you
- could even write to me).
-
-
- CMOS ram
- ~~~~~~~~
- I was debating with myself wether to use a system variable or CMOS ram to
- store the selected modes. I eventually chose CMOS ram as it simplies the use
- of QMC.
-
- QMC uses four bytes in the user allocated part of the CMOS ram. These are
- bytes 40-43 inclusive. I hope these do not clash with any other programs. If
- so, please let me know and I will do you a version which uses different
- locations.
-
-
- Future enhancements
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- It is possible that I might enhance QMC. For example, clicking adjust on the
- icon could have some mode related function, such as changing to a similar
- mode with a different number of colours.
-
- However, whether I improve QMC or not depends on how much I think people are
- using it, so if you are using it why not write and tell me, perhaps
- enclosing a disc of PD. If you include return postage with your disc, I will
- write back with the latest version, along with my other PD programs.
