- -------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- Chameleon is a Drawfile utility which allows you to change the colours in
- Drawfiles easily.
-
- Use the Interactive Help application which is provided in the Archimedes
- Applications suite to provide help on Chameleon's facilities.
-

-
- Operating Instructions
- ======================
-
- To use Chameleon:
-
- 1. Load Chameleon by double-clicking on the !Chameleon icon.
-
- 2. Drawfiles can be loaded into Chameleon by dragging them onto the
- Chameleon icon on the icon bar.
-
- 3. Use the toolbox and/or menu to select the operation to be performed.
-
- 4. Clicking on an object in the picture will apply the current operation
- to that object.
-
- 5. Clicking on an object with Adjust will take the colour from that object
- (where you clicked) and use it as the current replacement colour.
-
-
- The Toolbox and Colour Selector
- ===============================
-
- If the toolbox is not displayed, move the pointer into the Chameleon window
- and press F6.
- If the colour selector is not displayed, click on the colour box in the
- bottom right corner of the toolbox.
-
- Changing colours
- ================
-
- Make sure that the tool on the left hand side of the middle row in the
- toolbox is selected. Choose a colour from the colour selector. (Use the 256
- colour palette if you are in a 256 colour mode.)
- Click on an object in your picture and its colour will be changed. If the
- object has no fill colour, select the fill tool at the right hand side of
- the bottom row of tools. This allows you to change the fill colour and leave
- the line colour unchanged. The outline tool (next to the fill tool) allows
- you to change the line colour whilst leaving the fill colour unchanged.
-
- Fountain fills
- ==============
-
- The four tools on the left hand side of the bottom row in the toolbox
- provide fountain fills. When you select one of these tools, an arrow appears
- on the colour box. To select a start colour, click on the left side of the
- box and then choose a colour. To select an end colour, click on the right
- side of the box and then choose a colour. Fountain fills give a range of
- shades between these two colours. Even a 256 colour mode, however, is
- incapable of displaying the complete range of colours although RISC OS 3
- machines are capable of displaying more than 256 colours by using a
- dithering technique.
-
- Drag an arrow across the object-to-be-filled and then click on the object to
- implement the fill. There is a different arrow for each tool.
-
- Linear fill: an arrow with a start point and end point. The fountain fill
- extends from the start point to the end point.
-
- Band fill: an arrow with 4 movable end points. The fountain fill extends
- in both directions between the two pairs of end points. Moving the inner
- end points sets the width of the start colour band.
-
- Radial fill: an arrow with 2 movable end points. The fountain fill extends
- from the inner circle to the outer circle.
-
- Elliptical fill: two arrows, one with 1 end point and the other with 2.
- The fountain fill extends from the inner ellipse to the outer ellipse.
-
- The arrows can be moved to a different position by holding down Shift and
- dragging one of the points.
-
- If you hold down Ctrl whilst moving the arrows, movement is restricted to
- steps of 15°. This also allows arrows to be perfectly horizontal or
- vertical.
-
- Other tools
- ===========
-
- The tools in the second row (from left to right) have the following
- functions:
-
- Replace: changes the line and/or fill colour to the current colour
- Change hue: changes the colour to the hue of the current colour
- Make grey: changes the colour to a shade of grey
- Brighten: brightens the colour by decreasing the amount of black
- Darken: darkens the colour by increasing the amount of black
- Weaken: weakens the colour by increasing the amount of white
- Strengthen: strengthens the colour by decreasing the amount of white
-
- Target area
- ===========
-
- The top row of tools allows you to define the target area affected by the
- colour-changing operations. The tools (from left to right) have the
- following functions:
-
- Local: only the object beneath the pointer is affected
- Global: all objects having the same colour as the object beneath the pointer
- are affected
- Within box: a box may be dragged into position, colour changes apply to all
- objects which are entirely enclosed by the box
- Beneath box: changes are applied to all objects which are wholly or
- partially enclosed by the box
- Not within box: changes are applied to all objects which are completely
- outside the box
-
- Keyboard shortcuts
- ==================
-
- Shift Affects the outline:
-
- When the colour of a thin line is to changed, it may be difficult

- The effect is the same as when the outline tool is selected.
-
-
- Ctrl Affects the fill:
-
- When an object has no fill colour, or the filled area is very small,
- Ctrl should be pressed at the same time as clicking Select or Adjust.
- The pointer should be moved as close to the line as possible.
- The effect is the same as when the fill tool is selected.
-
- For Text objects, and text areas, pressing Ctrl during a click will
- treat those objects as if their bounding boxes were solid colour.
