  5. This file contains information not available at the  printing of the
  6. manual.  Please  read all the sections before you  proceed  with the
  7. installation.

  27. 1. SOFTWARE INSTALLATION
  28.  
  29.    The    installation   program,  INSTALL.EXE   will   modify   your
  30.    AUTOEXEC.BAT  and  CONFIG.SYS files.  Your  original files will be
  31.    renamed with the extension B~K.
  32.  
  33.    WINSETUP will NOT set up the drivers and applications properly  if
  34.    your BLASTER environment strings are incorrectly set.  Please make
  35.    sure  that  these  environment  strings  are set  properly  before
  36.    running WINSETUP.EXE.  You  may enter "SET"  at the  DOS prompt to
  37.    check  the  environment  settings.  Refer  to  your Sound  Blaster
  38.    manual  for more  details on  the  BLASTER and  SOUND  environment
  39.    strings.

  41.    Normally, WINSETUP.EXE needs to be run only once.  If the hardware 
  42.    settings of your sound  card needs to be  changed, use the  DRIVER
  43.    applet in CONTROL PANEL  to change the  settings of  your  Windows
  44.    drivers.  Refer to  your Windows  manual for  more details  on the
  45.    DRIVER applet.

  48. 2. HARDWARE CONFIGURATION
  49.  
  50.    Run SBCONFIG.EXE to configure your card if you change the  default
  51.    DMA  channels 1 and 5, or interrupt 5.  To  avoid  conflicts  with
  52.    Adaptec 1542 card change DMA 5 to 6 or 7.

  54.    Remember to REBOOT your system

  57. 3. UPGRADING FROM A PREVIOUS VERSION OF SOUND BLASTER 16 PRODUCTS
  58.    
  59.    If you are upgrading from previous  versions of Sound  Blaster 16,
  60.    delete all previously installed files to prevent any conflict with
  61.    the older software.
  62.  
  63.    You should not have duplicate copies of the following files:
  64.  
  65.    CTRES.DLL      - It should reside in your WINDOWS and \SB16\WINDRV
  66.                     directory.
  67.    CTCCW.DLL      - It should reside in your WINDOWS and \SB16\WINDRV
  68.                     directory.
  69.  
  70.    CTL3D.DLL      - It  should  reside  in  your  WINDOWS\SYSTEM  and
  71.                     \SB16\WINDRV directory.

  73.    To check, you can use the Windows File Manager to search your hard
  74.    disk for these files.   Any duplicate copy  found which is  not in
  75.    the specified directories should be deleted.

  77. 4. SOUND BLASTER 16 MIXER CONTROL
  78.  
  79.    SB16MIX.EXE
  80.    -----------

  82.    This mixer can only be accessed when you are in video mode 3 (text
  83.    mode - 80x25 lines in 16 colors) or 4 (graphic mode - 40x25  lines
  84.    in 4 colors).  If you are using any other  video  mode,  a  single
  85.    line  version of  the  mixer  will  appear.  No  mixer  control is
  86.    available  if  you  select a video mode  above 13h (Enhanced video
  87.    mode).

  90. 5. CREATIVE SOUNDO'LE
  91.  
  92.    Creative  Soundo'LE  uses  the hard  disk  as  the working  space.
  93.    Recording and playback are done directly to your hard disk.
  94.  
  95.    Creative Soundo'LE also supports compressed  wave files.  You  may
  96.    record  or  play  compressed  wave  files  using  Soundo'LE.   The
  97.    graphical  Signal  Indicator  will  not  be  updated when you  use
  98.    compressed files.

  101. 6. VOICE UTILITIES
  102.  
  103.    Below is a  list  of  the  limitations  and   capabilities  of the
  104.    following utilities :
  105.  
  106.      WAV2VOC .EXE   - Able to support ALAW, uLAW and ADPCM
  107.                       compressed files.
  108.  
  109.      VOC2WAV .EXE   - Does not support 16-bit compressed files.
  110.  
  111.      VOCN2O  .EXE   - Does not support 16-bit compressed files.

  114. 7. SOUND DRIVERS INSTALLATION UTILITY (INSTDRV.EXE)
  115.  
  116.    The program INSTDRV.EXE will not change the default  DMA  and  IRQ
  117.    settings  of  the  CTWMEM.DRV  and  CTWDSK.DRV  drivers.   Current
  118.    applications  using these two  drivers obtain the card's  settings
  119.    from the BLASTER environment string.

  122. 8. MAXIMUM RECORDING RATES FOR SOUND BLASTER 16
  123.  
  124.    The sampling rate used for recording is largely influenced by your
  125.    computer's main  processor.  The following maximum recording rates
  126.    are suggested when you use 16-bit digital audio under Windows:

  142.    For  optimal performance under Windows, configure your  audio card
  143.    for  16-bit  DMA  (Direct Memory Access).   Refer  to  your  Sound
  144.    Blaster 16  Getting Started Manual for more information on setting
  145.    up the audio card to use a 16-bit DMA channel.

  148. 9. CREATIVE COMPACT DISC PLAYER
  149.  
  150.    Double  click the "QCD readme" icon in the Sound Blaster 16 group
  151.    windows for more informations.

  154. 10. ADVANCED SIGNAL PROCESSOR
  155.  
  156.    For users with  Advanced  Signal  Processor, the  Advanced  Signal
  157.    Processor files (*.CSP) MUST be  located in the  Sound  Blaster 16 
  158.    CSP  sub   directory  (example  C:\SB16\CSP)   when  you  use  any 
  159.    compression technology.

  162. 11. USING WINDOWS QSOUND CONTROL PANEL
  163.  
  164.    The QSound effect  cannot be  enabled or  disabled  during a  wave
  165.    playback.  The  enabling or disabling of  QSound effect will  only
  166.    affect the next wave playback.

  168.    The QSound Control  window works  in low priority  mode.  When  an
  169.    application  like  Creative Mosaic  uses QSound, the control panel
  170.    becomes inactive.  When you quit the application that uses QSound,
  171.    the Control window will become active again.
  172.  
  173.    * Note : QSound application  program is only  available  on  Sound
  174.             Blaster 16 with Advanced Signal Processor.

  176. 12. MANUAL ERRATA
  177.     
  178.     If  errors  are  not  found  in  your manuals,  please ignore this
  179.     section.

  181.     A. User Reference Manual:

  183.     Page 3-4 and 3-5 In "Windows Mixer Menus" section,
  184.  
  185.     - "Save" command in the settings  menu  should  be "Save on exit",
  186.       which allows you to save all changes made to the mixer.

  188.     - "Always on top" command is included to make the application stay
  189.       on top all the time.
