  1. This README accompanies DNA DEMO - Freeware disk for Cubase.

  3. DNA Groove Templates - A Revolution in Sequencing
  4.  
  5. The Rhythm is the soul, the essense, the thread that binds great 
  6. music together.  Rhythm is intensely personal, individual, at 
  7. least it used to be until the introduction of the Digital Drum 
  8. Machine.
  9.  
  10. The entry of computers on the Music scene during the MIDI 
  11. revolution, created a new universal instant rhythm politely 
  12. termed Quantize.  Rhythm became fixed, constant, common, 
  13. mathematically defined by a micro-chip.
  14.  
  15. The convenience of normal quantizing tends to result in music 
  16. that is crystalized into a rhythmic straight jacket.  A straight 
  17. jacket that chases the individuality out of your creative 
  18. sequences.
  19.  
  20. Despite the advances in sequencer resolution software developers 
  21. have provided no convenient ways of taking advantage of the high 
  22. resolution.  By quantizing to 16th notes, a sequencer's 
  23. resolution is dramatically reduced to 4 pulses per quarter.  
  24. Absolutely inadequate for communicating most musical ideas.
  25.  
  26. Throughout our research, we have never encountered a musician 
  27. that plays quantized.  While there are certain situations when a 
  28. musician may want to use quantization, musicians need an option.
  29.  
  30. With Steinberg's Cubase Sequencer, musicians can now program 
  31. their own quantize templates and impose non-linear, user-defined 
  32. rhythms on their music.

  36. DNA Groove Templates capture live performances by great musicians 
  37. that have great feels.  These templates are provided within a 
  38. comprehensive environment that allows for powerful rhythmic 
  39. processing.

  41. DNA breaks down audio material into it's rhythmic components.  
  42. The relationship between noets is captured and translated into a 
  43. 2 bar Groove template.  Groove Templates can then be saved to 
  44. disk.  This means that you can create a library of feels tha same 
  45. way you create a library of sounds for synths and samplers.

  47. The feel is displayed on easy to understand Feel Charts.  These 
  48. charts can be used to compare the templates on disk and predict 
  49. what their sound will be.  Feel charts very quickly show the 
  50. rhythmic compatibilities between different templates and allow 
  51. for very precise and definitive modifications to their feel.

  53. DNA doesn't stop there, it provides Motions that manipulate the 
  54. template in hundreds of ways.  Each Motion acts on certain points 
  55. within the template.  Some are meant to simulate Fills and 
  56. others, to simulate lags, pushes and shuffles.  This allows for 
  57. very precise rhythmic placement of every note in your sequence.  
  58. The result - your music takes on a distinct feel, with each 
  59. instrument having its own subtle variation.  Never before has 
  60. rhythmic feel been as easy to control on a computer.

  62. DNA provides templates in 10 Beat Divisions.  You can therefore 
  63. translate the feel to music played with 8th note triplets or 3 
  64. against 4, among many other rhythmic signatures.

  66. Best of all, DNA comes with a comprehensive 38 page manual that 
  67. makes using the grooves both educational and fun.  The 
  68. possibilities are endless - within one set, there are thousands 
  69. of combinations of different feels.  If you want to expand your 
  70. music into new dimensions, you cannot afford to be without this 
  71. powerful feel processor.  Get into the groove.

  77. All these grooves are based on the same piece of music.  
  78. Therefore all these grooves will have coherence and can be used 
  79. together.  All grooves are 2 bars long.  All grooves are based on 
  80. a 4/4 time signature.  All groove are 16th notes, unless 
  81. otherwise specified.

  83. Straight - This is a mostly straight groove.  Most notes will 
  84. push especially towards the end of each bar.
  85. Push B2&4 - This will push (or make earlier) notes that fall on 
  86. the second and fourth beats of each bar. This is great to try on 
  87. a snare drum.
  88. Late B2&4 - This is the opposite of the above.
  89. Push P234 - This pushes the second, third and fourth sixteenth 
  90. notes within each beat.  This can be used to create a rushing 
  91. hihat (or any highly syncopated parts).
  92. Late P234 - This is the opposite of the above.
  93. Push B1&3 - This pushes the first and third downbeats of each 
  94. bar.  This is useful in create a rushing kick drum or downbeat.
  95. Late B1&3 - This is the opposite of the above.
  96. 8 Triplet - This creates a non-linear, but very musical eight-
  97. note triplet groove.  This is useful for your Jazz and Ballad 
  98. sequences.
  99. 16 Triplet - This is a non-linear sixteenth note triplet groove.  
  100. Great for solos and fast drum fills over triplet signatures.  
  101. This works well with the above groove.
  102. SOLO 3a4 - This contains a combination of a 16th note and an 8th 
  103. note triplet groove.  This is very useful for solos where both 
  104. these signatures are played.
  105. Shfl S2&4 - This is a soft shuffle of the second and fourth 
  106. sixteenth notes of each beat.  This is great for just about any 
  107. kind of music fron Dance to Rock to Reggae.
  108. Shfl M2&4 - This is a medium shuffle.  A little stronger than the 
  109. above.
  110. Shfl H2&4 - This is a heavy shuffle.  Even stronger than the 
  111. above.
  112. Move All - This creates a significant shift in whole areas of 
  113. notes.  This is useful for drum fills and solos.
  114. Push Fill - This creates a change in feel where the last bar is 
  115. rushed. this is typical of most drum fills.
  116. Late Fill - This is the opposite of the above.
  117. DNA 32nd - This is a one bar template containing non-linear 32nd 
  118. notes.

  120. Use Cubase's power to manipulate notes - Key Editor, Iterative 
  121. Quantize, Track Shifting etc. and of course your imagination.
