- The following software is based on a free software from
-
- The Berkeley Plateau Research Group
-
- Lawrence A. Rowe, Ketan Patel, and Brian Smith
- Computer Science Division-EECS, Univ. of Calif. at Berkeley.
-
- Please read for more information in the supplied original files for the MPEG
- decoder. With the next release of the software from the Berkeley Plateau
- Research Group they will include my sources and support the Macintosh.
-
- IMPORTANT INFO:
-
- The software MPEG for the Macintosh version 0.3 is now POSTCARDWARE. This means
- if you use the software send me a postcard. I like getting postcards!!!!!!
- Postcardware is cheap for the user (40 Cents from the USA) and alot of fun me.
- I will pin the cards on my wall to make it a bit more colorfull.
-
- DISTRIBUTION OF THE SOFTWARE:
-
- 1. Give this software to anyone who wants it!
-
- 2. It is not allowed to sell this software. You may charge the media costs
- but, this should be avoid when possible. This software is for fun use and
- not for comercial use.
-
- 3. Please supply the software as it is and don't change the contens of the
- archive.
-
- Changes since version 0.15
-
- 1. Support for MPEG movies of any size.
- 2. The TYPE of the MPEG file can be now 'BIN ', 'TEXT or 'MPEG' not just
- 'TEXT'.
- 3. The MPEG file now can be in any directory in your filesystem.
- 4. The player is alittle faster now. (10% - 25%)
- 5. The application MPEG to PICT 0.15 is replaced by MPEG to Quicktime 0.3.
- As the name said it will convert MPEG files direct to quicktime movies.
- 6. Hope I have fix the problem with MPEG to PICT converter which
- sometimes produced dither PICT's and wrong colortables.
-
- Hitlist of problems with the MPEG player and MPEG to PICT converter:
-
- 1. I have a Classic why does your program don't run?
-
- Ans: Oh sorry, it is compiled for the MC68020 processor, this means only
- Macintosh's with this processor or better are able to run the software.
-
- Now a list which models are supported:
-
- Mac II, LC, IIcx, SE/30, Classic II, Color Classic, LCII, IIvi,
- Performa 400, IIx, PB 140, IIsi, PB 145, PB 160, PB 170, LCIII, IIci,
- Duo 210, Performa 600, IIvx, Duo 230, PB 165c PB 180, IIfx, Centris
- 610, Centris 650, Quadra 700, Quadra 800, Quadra 900 and Quadra 950.
-
- Not supported are !!!!!!!
-
- PB 100, Mac Portable, SE, Classic, Plus, 512Ke, 128K and 512K.
-
- Sorry for all user who have one of this models, but to compile the
- program I need static datasegments greater 32KByte and the compiler
- supports this only on models with 68020 or better.
-
- 2. Hey the program works fine for the suppiled MPEG file F16.MPG but not
- for that one I have ftped from other sites.
-
- Ans: Ftp MPEG's always in binary mode!!!! MPEG files are not textfiles.
- If you transfer files between your Mac and a Unix machine in ascii mode
- all LF (line feed) will be replaced by CR's. This process kills the MPEG
- file and will crash the program. So be aware set binary mode, but
- not confuse it with MacBinary this is something different.
-
- 3. The MPEG files I have ftp wont show up in the file selector box what
- have I done wrong?
-
- Ans: The MPEG file should have the file TYPE 'TEXT' or 'BIN ' or 'MPEG'.
- Sometimes this isn't the case. So try to get BunchTyper 1.01. You
- will get this file from any big Mac archive on the internet and of
- cause also from my ftp site in the dir /pub/mac/utils. My site is
- home ftp site of this MPEG player for the Mac. You could reach it
- under the address suniams1.statistik.tu-muenchen.de (131.159.64.1).
- BunchTyper is a util to convert the TYPE of a file or a collection of
- files on the fly.
-
- 4. How could I interrupt the player and converter?
-
- Ans: You can interrupt the application with the key combination
- ESC + alt + AppleKey. This is a not widely know system 7.0 features.
- The next version will be more Macintosh like and support the normal
- interrupt key combination.
-
- Thanks to all who complaint about their problems.
-
- Now a short instruction how to use the applications:
-
- Both Application need system 7.0, 7.01 or 7.1 sorry system 6 users please
- update now, or you couldn't use this software and miss alot of the nice
- features from system 7.0 and its applications. You will need 3 MByte RAM
- for both applications nothing less.
-
- 1. View MPEG Files
-
- The application MPEG Player 0.3 plays MPEG movies at any size in a window
- on your desk.
-
- Run MPEG Player 0.3 and you get a fileselectorbox select a valid mpeg file
- and click the ok-botton. The file now can be in any directory on your
- harddisk.
-
- Now the movie should run on your monitor. I have tested the software in
- 1, 2, 4, 16, 256, 16Mio Color.(but you need system 7.0 or better).
- It is compiled for the MC68020 or better. After the movie has finished you get
- a window with some statistics about the just played movie.
-
- Now take the mouse and quit the Player in the File menu with quit.
-
- 2. Convert MPEG Files to Quicktime
-
- IMPORTANT INFO: You have to install quicktime 1.0 or better quicktime 1.5
- to run the application MPEG to Quicktime 0.3!!!!!!!!
-
- The application MPEG to Quicktime 0.3 converts the MPEG movie direct in
- to a quicktime movie file (hurray!!!). You will get the standard compression
- dialog. Here you can select your favorit compression algorithm and set
- the frames rate. The frame rate is default 30 fps. I could take the
- frame rate from the MPEG file, but most of the MPEGs around haven't a
- correct header. This means you will have to experiment sometimes with the
- frame rate. Now some words about the compression algorithm. Non of the
- quicktime compression algorithm's can compete with the MPEG algorithm in
- both size and quality. So don't be disapointed when watching your
- quicktime file produced from an MPEG. In most case the quality isn't bad
- with quicktime and the frame rates are mutch higher even on a Color Classic.
- Up to ten times the film will be faster with the video compressor as with
- MPEG on any Mac. This is the real difference between MPEG and quicktime.
- Quicktime alows you to playback movies in near realtime rate. MPEG needs
- for that hardware.
-
- Now select the MPEG file you like to convert. After that you will be ask
- to give the movie a name. Chose that name you like and go on. Now you can
- watch your movie while it is converted to quicktime. It would be only 5%
- faster not to display the movie while converting it. With long movies
- like canyon.mpg 1800 frames this could be very boring. So I decide to let
- the user watch what he is converting. Ok after a while the converter has
- fininsh, take the mouse and quit the Converter in the File menu with quit.
-
- Converting times depend one two things:
-
- 1. The MPEG-movie itself. (size and length)
- 2. The compression algorithm. Users with slow Mac should avoid using Compact
- Video this could take hours to convert especially with long MPEG movies.
-
- 3. Future of the MPEG player for the Macintosh
-
- a. Replace the user interface with my own, and put both application into
- one. This will over come some of the most worse problems with the
- application now, like not able to convert and play in background and
- so on.
-
- b. Adding some new things to the player. (Hey give hits what you would
- like to see in the next release of the software)
-
- I will try to enhance the software as my sparetime allows me to. So
- don't expeced mircales to come. But over the time I will do my best to fit
- your and my needs. Someone in the US is working on a MPEG component for
- Quicktime. This will fully replace my application but for now I think it
- is better than nothing. I am working on a Quicktime to MPEG converter. It is
- in a pre alpha stage now. If this application is ready I will include it in my
- distribution.
-
- 4. You found a bug or someting what's look like a bug. Than send me a
- bugreport via email or surfacemail which includes the following points:
-
- 1. Modell of the Macintosh you used.
- 2. System software version number and mode 24 or 32 addressing mode and
- virtual memory.
- 3. You use a 32-bit enabler? Yes, which one.
- 4. Display Card you use and in what mode 1, 2, 8, 16 or 32-bit mode.
- 5. You may use an display accelerator?
- 6. Inits and extentions and so one, you use. Some of them may cause the
- application to crash.
- 7. Memory size you have.
- 8. Something special I don't know.
- 9. If you find an MPEG which cause problem (exept being kill by an LF to
- CR conversation) ftp it to suniams1.statistik.tu-muenchen.de
- (131.159.64.1) in the dir /incoming/bad_mpegs.
-
- Have fun with the software
