  1. Hyplus -- Screen speed
  2.  
  3.         One common first impression of Hyplus is its speed, especially when
  4.         running the program on a hard disk.  Here's why Hyplus is fast:

  6.         (1)  Files are ASCII -- Hyplus uses ASCII files <link16> that load
  7.                                 much faster than graphic files.
  8.  
  9.         (2)  Files are small -- While Hyplus can load very large ASCII files
  10.                                 most files are single screen (average size 2k).
  11.  
  12.         (3)  Total file load -- Hyplus loads the entire ASCII file into a
  13.                                 buffer so page jumps <link06> are instantaneous.

  15.         (4)  Perceived speed -- Software quality is often measured by the speed
  16.                                 of screen updates.  If command response is
  17.                                 greater than 1/10 of a second, the mind
  18.                                 wanders, hampering users.
  19.  
  20.         (5)  Browsing effort -- Browsing uses experimental exploration as a
  21.                                 primary method of search.  As a mental process,
  22.                                 browsing only works if the hypertext jumps are
  23.                                 intuitive and instantaneous.
