- " Most researchers believe HIV (human immunodeficiency
- virus) causes AIDS. This is a theory and it may be wrong
- .. Hypotheses abound. But, at best, researchers can make a
- case for HIV as the cause of AIDS based only on
- circumstantial evidence. To some it is an open and shut
- case, excellent evidence pointing to an obvious conclusion
- - HIV causes AIDS. But to other scientists it's a case of
- mistaken identity.
-
- This is a shareware program but The Hamilton Spectator
- does not want your money .. If you find it useful please
- send a donation of any amount to an AIDS charity in your

-
- " This is a gunboat poem, adrift on the slow black stream of
- someone's unsuspected house turned everglade.
- "
-
- Everglade is a hypertext poem. Keywords in one verse act as
- "doors" to another poem. For example, by selecting
- "someone's" from the opening verse, a new poem displays
- which contains another door, "silver". Selecting silver
- displays another poem, which opens:
-
- " They were better than marbles, one lying in your palm
- would roll steely cold, dense with secret power.
- "
-
- Other doors in the remainder of "silver" lead to yet other
- poems. And so on.
-
- This is a very complete and well written system. Anyone
- interested in hypertext, or creative writing, should
- consider it a "must see".
-
- Everglade was completed with the aid of a grant from the
- Ontario Arts Council. Rod Willmot not only wrote Everglade,
- but the Hyperion reader which drives it.
-
- Here's one last snippet we couldn't resist, taken from the
- "happening" door:
-
- " Get your hands on a computer, my friends. This is not
- icing on civilization's cake. The past is a fuse to the
- fireworks I think about, exploding as we open our eyes.

- " THIS IS A TEXT BOOK ON DISKS FOR THOSE WISHING TO KEEP IN
- THE FOREFRONT
-
- This book is written ENTIRELY for those who like to
- think for themselves. Those who need pre-digested mental
- food will get indigestion -- of the mind. They might also
- develop violent symptoms.
-
- There will not be many real readers for this book. It is
- the most ELITIST of books. IT SELECTS ITS OWN READERS by
- making the inferior put it down with declamations of
- "nonsense", "garbage", etc. THAT leaves the select. These
- are they whom I want for my reading public. If you are one

-
- " I've chatted with a few folks about Virtual Books recently.
- They seem to have some notion that you cannot display graphics
- from within the IRIS program. I've spent over 14 years in the
- Army learning how to "jury-rig" stuff and I have applied that
- same off-the-wall viewpoint in the 22 years I've been playing
- with computers. I had already been using graphics in my IRIS
- files for over two months when I was suddenly informed that it
- couldn't be done. Oh, stupid me. Whatever.
-
- While thinking this over, it occurred to me that there may be
- a number of people out there who would like to know about
- using graphics from within the IRIS (and perhaps the DART)
- program. So, I put together the enclosed IRIS tutorial file,
- complete with a number of different graphics format.

- " SEVEN MOST PROFITABLE BUSINESSES
-
- These are the most profitable home based businesses that can
- be found in America today. The amazing thing about every one
- of these ventures is that it does not require much capital.
- Unlike the majority of businesses where you need a large
- capital outlay of $10,000 to $50,000 just to get started, you
- can start on a shoe string and make a great deal of money in
- a short period of time. Another unique feature is that you
- can work at home. You don't need an office, you can start at
- your kitchen table. And you'll probably make so much money
- that you can quit your job if you want to.
-
- PROOF
-
- None of these enterprises are get-rich-quick schemes. They
- are, however, proven get-rich-slow programs. If you ever
- dreamed of the freedom of operating your own profitable
- business, then this is for you! While you are reading this,
- hundreds of people are making thousands of dollars every
- month -- part time -- with these fascinating ventures. Now
- you have the opportunity to do exactly what they are doing.
- You too can easily be the proud owner of your own successful
- business, earning thousands of dollars in your spare time --
- and best of all -- in the privacy of your own home!
-
- GUARANTEED
-
- This incredible book is full of valuable information that
- insiders have kept to themselves for many years. Their
- secrets have been revealed in this amazing book. I want you
- to see it for yourself. Send in your order now. Read it.
- Study it for 10 days. If you don't agree that it's worth at
- least 100 times what you have paid for, return it within 10

- " Why have I, as a Christian, decided to devote so much of my
- time over the last two years in the task of adapting the
- Holy Koran to computer files? .. My interest in the Koran
- began while I was a teacher in Iran .. I found that belief
- in Islam is more than a religion .. Islam is an Arabic word
- that measn 'acceptance', 'commitment', submission' or
- 'surrender', and it express the innermost attidue of those
- who follow the teachings of the Prophet.
- "
- I believe that a computer readable English language
- interpretation of the Koran would help non-Muslims better
- understand the beliefs of Muslims around the world and also

-
- THE DEER HUNTERS, a novel by John Peter. This novel

-
- LEFEU, a novel by John Peter. The picaresque novel is
- back! Not since the days when Tom Jones wandered across
- the English countryside has a more endearing hero graced
- the pages of literature: Rene LeFeu, revolutionary,
- smuggler, master chef, lover, and (alas, above all else)

- to Dallas, Mexico, Ireland, Saudi Arabia, New Orleans, and
- eventually back to Canada. This is a two-disk set of
- DS/DD, 360K disks. $10.00 postpaid, USA.
-
- A MAINE YANKEE IN BIG SUR, a novel by John Peter. Step
- aside Keroac, Brautigan, and Miller, this is the

- This is a delightful original production from BPLAN Virtuals,
- written by SF pro Thomas A. Easton. Starting with the scinece
- fictional question "What if?", Easton posits the sudden
- appearance of remarkable objects that can help people
- communicate far better than they usually do. A tug-of-war
- develops between the government -- which fears the changes in
- society such a development would bring -- and an unlikely
- "resistance movement" which battles the government's ever more
- strident efforts to destroy and denounce the objects. Despite
- the fun, Easton's story has a lot to say about how we, and those
- in power, see the world. Just $5, plus $2 shipping and handling.

- " This ELECTRONIC BOOK is the first of its kind. In it we
- actually begin the next step in THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION!
- Educate yourself on the most important issues of National
- Importance and then vote on some of the solutions to this
- country's greatest problems. You will print out a ballot and
- mail it back to the NEW AMERICAN DEMOCRACY, where it will be
- tabulated and the results declared to be the POPULAR LAWS OF
- THE LAND!
-
- This book will establish a Real Democracy in America and is
- the first of its kind anywhere! With it we will eventually
- change the Constitution so that the will of the majority of
- Americans is the greatest ruling force in the land. No
- longer will the American people have to be dependent on the
- will of the PACS, the lobbyists, the Senators, the
- Congressmen, the Presidents. We will create the major laws
- of the land by placing them on the ballot and voting on them
- as a nation. We must begin by reading all about it and using
- this electronic version of democracy before the rest of the
- country will follow. Therefore, your participation will go
- down in history! Finally, you can do something about it!
-
- Thomas Jefferson once said that he wanted to give the people
- the ability to rule themselves. He did not trust the
- politicians. He even went so far as to say that we should
- have a bloody revolution every twenty years because he knew
- that power would corrupt the handful of men who would gather
- to represent us. His great dream was not fulfilled in his
- lifetime because the rest of the founding fathers of this
- great nation did not trust the average citizen. This body was
- composed mainly of wealthy slaveowners and they wanted a
- system that would protect their interests. And, of course,
- you couldn't give the vote to women or slaves!
-
- Today, times have changed. We are a great working class
- nation. Our interests are all interwoven. We are all
- educated to the best of our ability. The vast majority of us
- work hard for a living. Very few of us owns slaves! More
- importantly, the average citizen seems so much wiser than
- those we send to Washington to rule in our name. For
- example, few American taxpayers would vote for foreign aid
- while millions of us are homeless in our own country and we
- go deeper and deeper in debt. Very few of us would vote for
- a Welfare system that does not require the recipient to give
- something back, to do something valuable for society in
- return. Very few of us would put convicted murderers back on
- the street to repeat their crime. It's time to trust in the
- wisdom and goodness of ordinary American people.
-
- Today, the technology exists to fulfill Thomas Jefferson's
- dream of democracy in America. Don't let another day go by
- without doing something to see it happen. Join the
- Revolution! Invest a small portion of your energy in the
- future of your country. You may find it paying back
- dividends for you and your progeny for centuries. If those
- who have gone before you had not done at least as much, where
- would we be now?
-
- Operation Desert Storm reminds us that many millions of brave
- young American boys have given their lives for Democracy and
- many millions of people all over the world are giving their
- lives for the first precious promise of Democracy. Now, it's
- our turn to do our part! STAND UP AND BE COUNTED!

- Survivalist fiction for the rest of us. Here's how it begins:
-
- " In the year two thousand thirty-four, after worldwide
- devastation by the more deranged members of our species, a
- highly specialized historian of eighty-four intellectually
- stimulating years will, at long last, sit down in an
- underground bunker library and program the computer to go
- into a hands-off mode of operation the next time someone
- sits down before the keyboard.
-
- When a scholar next takes that seat, a summary of the
- subject to which the old historian had dedicated a lifetime
- will fill the small computer chamber as the voice of the
- historian narrates the story, illustrated life-size on
- screen while a printout emerges from a noisy peripheral
- behind the glowing keyboard.
- "
- A companion essay, "Psychopathology of the Civilizer" is bundled

-
- " Follow Me is a harmonic narrative of the ministry of Jesus
- the Nazarene based on the Gospels of Mark, Matthew, Luke,
- and John. The events described in Follow Me were recorded in
- at least three of the four Gospels.
-
- Although contemporary grammar and punctuation have been
- used, this does not represent a re-translation. The object
- here was to create a brief, unified text which would serve
- to introduce the Gospels to the modern reader.
- "
- Using "contemporary grammar and punctuation" is more effective
- than it sounds: Follow Me reads very well, but remains faithful
- to the original text.
-
- Note that Follow Me is based on a Greek Orthodox harmony, rather
- than the venerable King James.
