- The Las Vegas EGA Casino
- ________________________
-
- The Las Vegas EGA Casino is a shareware game with an interesting
- history. It is three games in one: blackjack, video poker, and
- a slot machine. One of the authors, Diana Gruber, used to deal
- blackjack on the Las Vegas strip. The Las Vegas EGA Casino requires
- EGA graphics to run, and supports a Sound Blaster card if present.
-
- History of the Las Vegas EGA Casino
- ___________________________________
-
- The Las Vegas EGA Casino was one of the first programs I wrote, back in
- 1987 when I was just learning how to program. I wrote it in FORTRAN,
- to show off a graphics library my husband Ted was working on. I wrote
- the video poker game and the blackjack game, and Ted wrote the slot
- machine. We showed it off at Fall Comdex, 1987, and then released it
- as shareware and distributed it exclusively through PC-Sig.
-
- As time went by, I sort of forgot about the Las Vegas EGA Casino.
- Whenever somebody would send me a few dollars as a "toke", I would
- send them back a thank you letter, and a copy of MicroBucks II or
- Klondike to evaluate. Occasionally I got a letter from other shareware
- distributors, but I politely explained to them that the Las Vegas EGA
- Casino was a PC-SIG exclusive, and they were welcome to carry my three
- other shareware programs in their library.
-
- Hacked!
- ______
-
- In early 1991, I discovered that there was a version of the Las
- Vegas EGA Casino circulating that did not work. People started
- writing me letters, asking me why my program would hang their
- computer. Then one of my registered users sent me a copy of the
- non-functioning version of the program. The Blackjack game worked
- fine, but the video poker game and the slot machine game did not
- run at all. As one of my users put it, "it hung my computer tighter
- than a drum". On closer inspection, it became apparent the program
- had been deliberately altered.
-
- The original program has a line on the title screen that says
- "Special PC-SIG game disk". On the altered version of the program,
- this line reads "Special GEMINI game disk". I was shocked to
- discover this. I never put the word "GEMINI" on the program when
- I wrote it! I have no idea who changed my program. Who could have
- done such a thing?
-
- Whoever altered the word "PC-SIG" to read "GEMINI" apparently botched
- the job. Either they altered a corrupted copy of the program, or
- they deliberately or accidently changed bytes in 12 other seemingly
- random places. It is hard for me to tell exactly what happened, but
- one thing is obvious: the altered program does not work. It will
- hang your computer. I am pretty sure it does not do any actual
- damage to your system. I have scanned the program for viruses and I
- did not find any.
-
- I do not know who hacked the program. The modified program that the
- registered user sent me was on a disk with a "Gemini Shareware" label
- on it. Further investigation revealed that the program was sold
- through Gemini Shareware retail stores in Oregon and Washington.
- Also, the Las Vegas EGA Casino was listed in the Gemini Shareware
- catalog, as disk #260. Gemini Shareware is an approved vendor of the
- Association of Shareware Professionals, of which I am not a member. I
- never gave Gemini Shareware permission to sell my program in their
- retail stores, or to list it in their catalog, and I certainly never
- gave anybody permission to modify my program. I don't know how such
- a thing could have happened.
-
- Needless to say, I was very distressed when I discovered what had
- happened and I am still recovering from the shock.
-
- Updated: Version 2.0 is Born
- ____________________________
-
- My FORTRAN was rusty and I had difficulty locating the original code,
- but I managed to find and recompile the original Las Vegas EGA Casino.
- Then I set about trying to make the program modern and interesting.
- It really was a pretty good program to begin with. Three gambling games,
- no reported bugs, a simple interface, and big, easy-to-read cards. It
- just wasn't very flashy, and compared to newer programs, it looked
- downright primitive.
-
- All that has changed now. I have put in some artistic new screens,
- and added music and sound effects. You will need a Sound Blaster
- card to appreciate the new sounds. I also made the sound effects
- optional -- you can use your NumLock key to toggle them off and on.
-
- The registration price has gone up to $15, but that includes a great
- registration bonus: Big Bertha! My newest, and possibly best slot
- machine. More information on that below.
-
- Special Offer
- _____________
-
- If anybody has a copy of the hacked version of the Las Vegas EGA
- Casino, please write to me and tell me where you got it. If you have
- it on a disk with the original vendor label, please send it to me.
- In return, I will give you a free registered version of the Las Vegas
- EGA Casino, and a copy of Big Bertha.
-
- Notice to Shareware Distributors
- ________________________________
-
- Version 2.0 of the Las EGA Vegas Casino may be included in your library,
- with one notable exception. If you have ever sold the hacked version of
- the Las Vegas EGA Casino then forget it, I don't want to do business
- with you. To the other vendors, forgive me for that emotional outburst,
- and thank you for considering the Las Vegas EGA Casino for inclusion
- in your library.

- Installing and Running Version 2.0 of the Las Vegas EGA Casino
- ______________________________________________________________
-
- To install the Las Vegas EGA Casino on a hard disk, just copy all
- the files into the directory of your choice. If you don't have a
- Sound Blaster card, you can delete all the files with the ".VOC"
- extension. But please, if you give this program to anybody, be sure
- that all the files are included. Type "Casino" to start the program.
- Press a key at the intro screen to get to the menu screen. From the
- menu screen, select which game you want to play.
-
- Las Vegas Casino Blackjack
- __________________________
-
- At the casino menu level, press F1 to choose Las Vegas Casino
- Blackjack. If you need help, or if this is the first time you have
- played Las Vegas Casino Blackjack, press the F1 key again. You can
- get help at any time by pressing the F1 key. Pressing the F1 key
- will bring up the help menu. From this menu, you may choose several
- options. For example, you may choose to change the size of your
- bankroll or minimum bet, you may force a shuffle, you may change the
- number of decks, or you may view the current status of the deck (how
- many cards are left and the running count). You do not need to
- change any of these things to play the game. Las Vegas Casino
- Blackjack begins with a 52 card deck, a $20.00 bankroll and a $2.00
- minimum bet. All you have to do to bet is press the up arrow key.
- Pressing the up arrow once will bet $2.00, pressing it again will
- increase the bet to $4.00, and so on. You may also decrease the bet
- by pressing the down arrow key. When you are satisfied with the size
- of the bet, press the Enter key to deal the cards.
-
- Las Vegas Casino Blackjack will deal cards from 1, 2, 4, or 6 decks.
- A new hand will be dealt without shuffling if there are 6 or more
- cards left in the deck. If all the cards in the deck are used up in
- the middle of a hand, the cards that are not showing on the table
- will be reshuffled and the hand will continue without interruption.
- You may force a shuffle by choosing the "change number of decks"
- option from the help menu (press F1 then F4). You may not force a
- shuffle in the middle of a hand.
-
- You may bet from $1.00 to $500.00. You may specify a bankroll of up
- to $10,000. There is no limit on how much you can win.
-
- Las Vegas Casino Blackjack deals two cards to the player and two
- cards to the dealer, one of them face down. You must decide whether
- to hit, split, double-down, stay, or surrender before you see the
- dealer's hole card. Press the space bar to hit and Enter to stay.
- Press "D" to double-down and "S" to split. If you want to surrender,
- press "Control-S". If the dealer has an ace showing, you will be
- asked if you want to take insurance. Respond with a "Y" if you want
- to take insurance, or an "N" if you don't.
-
- You may hit any hand including a blackjack, and you may double down
- on any hand including a blackjack. If you have a pair of cards which
- have the same value, you may split them. You may resplit pairs up to
- four times. Aces that are split receive only one card each and may
- not be resplit. You may double-down after you split. You may
- surrender your first two cards if the dealer does not have a
- blackjack (late surrender).
-
- The dealer will hit until at least a soft 17 is showing. If the
- player busts, the dealer will display the hole card, but will not
- take any hits.
-
- Las Vegas Casino Blackjack displays information about your bankroll,
- your bet, and your winnings in the upper right corner of the screen.
- It also displays a little blue rectangle which represents the number
- of cards remaining in the deck. When the entire rectangle is dark
- blue, the cards have just been shuffled. When the top 1/4 of the
- rectangle is light blue, then about 25% of the cards have been dealt
- out, and so on. If you want to know the exact number of cards left
- in the deck, you need to press F1 and then F5. To return to the game,
- press F1 again.
-
- For card-counters, and those who would be card-counters, you may
- check the status of the deck at any time. Las Vegas Casino Blackjack
- keeps track of two popular card counts, Stanford Wong's High-Low
- count and Arnold Snyder's Zen count. The idea is for the player to
- practice counting cards in his head and then use Las Vegas Casino
- Blackjack to check his accuracy. To get the running count at any
- time, press F1 and then F5. To return to the game, press F1 again.
-
- For more information about the rules of Blackjack and card-counting
- strategies, see the Blackjack references.

- Las Vegas Video Poker
- _____________________
-
- At the casino menu level, press F3 to choose Las Vegas Video Poker.
- Use the insert key or the up arrow key to insert coins. Press Enter
- to deal five cards. If you insert five coins, you don't need to hit
- Enter. The cards are dealt automatically after the fifth coin. Use
- the first five function keys to hold the cards you want to keep. If
- you change your mind about keeping a card, you can press the function
- key again to "unhold" the card. After you decide which cards to
- keep, press Enter. The cards you didn't hold will be discarded, and
- they will be replaced by new cards. The game will calculate your
- winnings. This game is simple and fun to play. It is the favorite
- of Las Vegas locals and millions of tourists. Las Vegas locals and
- millions of tourists can't be wrong.
-
- The video poker game in the Las Vegas EGA Casino is a simple jacks
- or better machine. If you want to play other video poker machines,
- you should pick up a copy of Video Poker à la Carte at your local
- software store. This game is published by ComputerEasy, and features
- Joker Poker, Deuces Wild, Double Down, Multi-meter Progressive and
- Second Chance poker.

- MicroBucks
- __________
-
- This is the original MicroBucks slot machine, which I fondly refer to
- as "MicroBucks I". It has all the original symbols, including the
- lemons, and the reels spin in exactly the same positions as in the
- original program. The only thing I changed is the frame around the
- reels. I also added a handle that goes up and down. I think it is
- much prettier now.
-
- MicroBucks I is a one-coin, one-reel slot machine. If you want to
- play a five-coin, five-reel slot machine, I suggest you take a look
- at MicroBucks II. You can find it in the file "slot.zip" on your
- local bulletin board, or you can order it from me using the enclosed
- order form. There is also a MicroBucks III which is distributed along
- with Video Poker à la Carte. Will there be a MicroBucks IV? Probably
- someday! I have some ideas in mind, but I haven't started working on
- it yet.
-
- To run MicroBucks, just press any key. Press Esc to exit, and the
- NumLock key toggles the sound off and on.

-
- I wish I knew who to give credit to for the wonderful arrangement of
- "Aint Misbehavin". There are hundreds of these music files circulating
- in the public domain and I chose one I thought sounded especially nice.
- Will whoever is responsible for this lovely music please contact me?
- I would like to give you credit for your work and perhaps work with you
- in the future.
