This is the communications channel through which your computer communicates to your modem. If you are uncertain which port to select, you can leave it at its default value or click on the Test Port button to check the port. If you get a 'No response received from the modem' message, check that your modem is connected and switched on. If you still get no response select a different COM port and run the test again.
Modem:
Select your modem type from this drop down list. If your modem is not listed, check the documentation that came with it to see if it is compatible with another modem, and select that modem instead. If there is no equivalent listed, use Hayes compatible at the appropriate baud rate. Alternatively, you can select the 'user defined' option and specify your modem's initialisation string, using the Configuration utility after you have installed the BT Internet software.
Dial-In Location:
There are two locations, London and Outside London. If you have an 0171 or 0181 number or local call access to 0171 numbers choose the London location. Otherwise select Outside London.
Dial Out Prefix:
If you have to dial a number (or a combination of numbers) to get an outside line, then type it in here. Otherwise you may leave it blank.
Chargecard Prefix:
If you wish to use your Chargecard for access to BT Internet enter the account number (excluding the 144 access code) and PIN in the appropiate fields.
Note: These calls will be charged at the normal Chargecard rate.
Dialling Type:
Select TouchTone if your phone is button operated.
Select ISDN if you have an ISDN line.
Otherwise select Pulse.
ISDN:
BT's basic rate ISDN service ISDN2 provides customers with two high speed digital exchange lines (64kb/s) which are more accurately described as channels. It is a cost effective, public switched digital service suitable for a variety of applications using voice, data and video.
By using ISDN2 with BT Internet you will benefits from high speed connections for fast data transfer enabling the ability to save time and money.
