-
- 1.0 - Welcome.
-
- Hello and welcome to BSX's first release of SLOTY! Many's the hour
- we here at BSX have spent in seedy bars. One of the things we've done in
- bars, other than the usual acts against nature, is to play the various
- games found there. As with many aspects of life, one of the things
- we've discovered is that the more we drink, the better life becomes,
- with one noticable exception: the slot machine poker games. It always
- seems the more we drink and the more we play them, the more we lose.
- Of course, in our intoxicated state, we delude ourselves that these
- machines are not rigged for precisely that purpose. Well, we thought,
- it would be nice to see if we are really that bad at slot machine poker
- or if the machines cheat as wantonly as we suspect. You now possess the
- tool we've developed to test this: SLOTY. It is a no foolin' poker
- machine. Drink as much as you want: it still won't cheat. Better yet,
- play as much as you want: you won't lose a dime. Of course, you won't
- actually win anything either. What do you want for five bucks?
-
- 2.0 - Legal Stuff. PLEASE READ!!!
-
- SLOTY 1.1 (C) 1990 BSX International
-
- SLOTY 1.1 was developed and compiled using Borland's Turbo Pascal 5.5.
-
- This software is provided "as is" with no guarantees of any kind. The
- developers assume no responsibilities other than those indicated below.
- You may use and distribute this product as you wish, but only under the
- following conditions:
-
- 1) You may sell this program without the permission of BSX
- International but you MUST NOT alter the program or its
- documentation. You MUST NOT charge any fees other than fees for
- copying and MUST clearly state that this fee is NOT a substitute for
- registration with BSX.
-
- 2) Do not distribute this product if it has been reduced in any way.
- You may add files, but you may not remove any of the originals.
-
- 3) Under no circumstances may you remove the copyright notices from the
- code or documentation.
-
- 2.1 - Shareware.
-
- This product is SHAREWARE and is distributed in good faith for your
- enjoyment. You may play it for a short period to become familiar with
- it. If you decide you like it and want to keep playing it, you should
- send a $5 registration fee to BSX (PAYABLE TO ROBERT ROBERDS), otherwise
- you should stop using it. If only all software folks let you use their
- product before you paid for it the world would be a much better place.
- We've bought so much BAD software that we don't use, and we're sure you
- have too, that we feel GOOD programs should be rewarded. If you don't
- like SLOTY, we're not hurt; if you do like our stuff, thank us, and
- we'll keep making it.
- This program is not "protected" in any way and is not altered so
- that non-registrants will suffer. The authors don't believe in denying
- anyone a chance to use our stuff. We are programmers, not businessmen.
- We trust that anyone who likes SLOTY and wants more of it will register.
- We're not naive, just a little idealistic.
- If you do not register you may still distribute this game provided
- you follow the rules above. Also, even if you have paid a distributor
- for the disk this game was on, YOU ARE STILL NOT REGISTERED. We do not
- receive payments from distributors and they do not represent us in any
- way.
-

-
- Your support and comments are appreciated! Really, they are! Hello?
-
- 3.0 - Setup.
-
- A complete copy of SLOTY 1.1 has the following files:
-
- SLOTY.EXE - The actual game program executable.
- SLOTY.D1T - A data file.
- SLOTY.D2T - Another data file.
- SLOTY.D3T - Still another data file.
- SLOTY.D4T - Yet again, a data file.
- SLOTY.DOC - The docs file you are now reading.
- BSXCAT.DOC - A catalog of other amazing BSX software values.
- ORDER.DOC - E Z 2 use BSX International order form.
-
-
- To run SLOTY 1.1 just put the .EXE and data files in a directory. If
- that directory is in your path, you may now run SLOTY from anywhere;
- otherwise, you will have to cd to that directory to play. Now, just
- type "SLOTY". If you have any problems we higly recommend that you edit
- or create the file CONFIG.SYS in your boot directory, and add these
- lines:
- FILES=20
- BUFFERS=40
- and then reboot your computer.
- For other problems, check the requirements below:
-
- 1) IBM PC, XT, AT, PS/2 or compatible.
- 2) 256K RAM minimum.
- 3) EGA or VGA video adapter with at least 256K of memory on it.
- 4) DOS 2.1 or higher.
- 5) MS compatible mouse is recommended, but not required.
-
- SLOTY WILL NOT WORK WITHOUT AN EGA OR VGA CARD!
-
- Anyway, to run it, just type "SLOTY" at the DOS prompt. Or, if you
- wish to begin the game with sound off, type "SLOTY -S". At any rate,
- you can always turn sound on or off from the game play screen itself.
- This game with automatically detect a mouse, if one is present and a
- driver is installed.
- This game has been playtested on several systems. We cannot say it
- will work on every configuration, but it will work on many, many of
- them. We cannot guarantee that this program will run on any operating
- system other than DOS or that it will work with any TSRs (Terminate
- and Stay Resinent programs) or memory management devices.
- Please try to recreate any problem on another, similar configuration
- before assuming we have screwed up. We will try to solve any problems
- you tell us about, but you must be clear. Before contacting us, please
- re-read the docs to make sure you aren't missing something.
-
- 4.0 - Rules. (i.e.- About playing SLOTY.)
-
- You bet from 25 cents to $2.50. You are then dealt 5 cards. You may
- select any to keep. You are dealt replacements for the ones you do not.
- If you get "Jacks or better", you win. The return on your bet depends on
- your bet and the hand you have when you win. When you win, you may
- try to double your winnings. A deck is cut and if the card shown is a
- nine or greater, your winnings are doubled. An eight and your bet is
- returned. Anything less, and you lose the whole bet and winnings from
- any other doubles on it. Aces are high at all times. By way of
- explanation, "Jacks or better" means a pair of Jacks or any hand that
- would beat a pair of Jacks. If you don't know how to score poker hands,
- you don't belong in bars. So what made you want to play this game?
-
- 5.0 - Using SLOTY
-
- You start the game with $100, in quarters. You can click on "Insert"
- with left mouse button to add a quarter. To repeat the last hand's bet,
- use the right mouse button on "Insert". To get your cards, click on
- "Deal". To keep any of the cards you get, click on them. Then hit
- "Deal" again to get the new cards.
- If you are not using a mouse, use the first letter of a command (i.e.
- "B" for Boss) to invoke it. Also, the Insert key will choose "Insert
- 25ยข", and Enter will call "Deal". The Down Arrow key will automatically
- insert your previous bet. To hold cards, use the Left and Right Arrow
- Keys to move the red selector bar. Hit space to hold cards, then hit
- Enter or "D" to get the new cards, if any. It's simple.
- If you win, your bet is multiplied by the number you see in the
- scoring section of your screen. You may then double the pot by answering
- "Yes" when asked. Double as often as you like, but don't be suprised if
- you eventually lose! Your current financial status is displayed in the
- upper right of your screen.
- This game is not "rigged" and plays about as randomly as is possible
- on a microcomputer. Remember that the numbers generated by software on
- micros are not completely random. If you win with this game as often as
- or less often than you do with the one in your favorite pub, you should
- seriously consider giving up poker, or drinking, or both. Sex is still
- OK, though. Feel free to do that as often as you like (or, as is more
- appropriate in your case, as often as you can).
-
- 5.1 - Features
-
- Below is a list of the other buttons on your screen and what they
- will do for you:
-
- YES & NO : Allows you to answer "yes" or "no" to questions posed to you
- by this simulation.
-
- HELP: If you need reminding on how the game works, pick HELP. A
- nifty rules summary will appear.
-
- BOSS: Use this button to turn your screen into a convincing DOS
- directory listing. When in this mode, type "exit" to go back to
- right where you left off or "abort" to really drop back into DOS.
- Using abort will cause any game you were playing to be completely
- lost, but it may well save your job. Notice that BOSS need not
- be used exclusively at work. It can help you convince almost
- anybody that you are doing serious computer stuff.
-
- SOUND: If you don't like the tunes or if you are trying to make people
- think you really are busy, click this to silence SLOTY. Click it
- again if you change your mind.
- IF YOU WISH TO START WITH THE SOUND OFF, TYPE "SLOTY -S" TO RUN
- THE GAME. THERE WON'T EVEN BE THAT TUNE AT THE TITLE SCREEN.
-
- QUIT: Is an orderly way to leave the game.
-
- 6.0 - Technical and Version Notes.
-
- SLOTY was developed using Borland's Turbo Pascal 5.5 on an IBM PC
- with an Intel Inboard 386, 2 megs of RAM, a Microsoft Bus Mouse, and a
- Paradise Pro VGA card.
- It was beta tested and further developed on an Epson IIe 286 AT
- Compatible with a 40MB Conner Hard Drive, Paradise VGA Plus Card and
- Kraft Trackball.
- We've run it on other machines with equally successful results.
-
- Version 1.1 is the initial release of this game. Comments for future
- improvements are welcome. Read below about BSX International and how you
- can get in touch with us.

- heathen who didn't like it.

-
- 7.0 - About BSX International.
-
- Originally TWO GUYS WHO ARE PROGRAMMERS, we are now BSX. The two
- guys are Bob and Dave, frustrated programmers who wind up working on
- everthing but their true avocation: games. We are in our mid-20's, so we
- are old enough to remember the 70's (even though we'd rather not), but
- hip enough to appreciate the subtle fascination of the 90's. We aren't
- married to anyone; we don't have kids. We just go to work, come home,
- play games and then pass out on the couch after drinking a lot. In fact,
- Bob's been drinking rather too much lately. (Look who's talking!) The
- rest, as they say, is history.
- BSX maintains corporate headquarters in humid Durham, NC.
- Development, distribution and parties occur there. Our other office is
- in boring Trumbull, CT. Testing, planning and parties occur there. Mind
- you, they're not usually very good parties.
- BSX welcomes comments and suggestions from registered users. We
- cannot accept job applications or questions concerning distributors, but
- we will consider job offers and requests for dates.
- As a new service to our clients, and ourselves, BSX can be contacted
- on Prodigy by writing to JBVC54A, and on GEnie at R.ROBERDS1. Remember:
-
- ** WE CANNOT ACCEPT PRODUCT ORDERS ON PRODIGY OR GENIE!!! **
- ** THEY'D KICK OUR BUTTS IF THEY CAUGHT US!!! **
-
- If you want to write to us about our stuff, about games in general,
- or (if female) about what you're doing this weekend or presently
- wearing, then we'd love to hear from you.
-
- 8.0 - Acknowledgements.
-
- Bob would like to thank Dave for continuing to "fluff the weasel" at
- work, testing BSX stuff and writing documentation instead of actually
- doing his job or anything like that. Kudos to Patti Rocks and the R&R
- Dr. for stuffing his gullet with dip and chicken and the like. Thanks to
- Dave Johndrow for TEGAS work above and beyond the call. And a final
- note of gratitude to LRG for controlling her mood swings to the extent
- that she's never seriously threatened him with anything more lethal
- than a pool cue.
-
- Dave would like to thank John, Lori, and Bob for good times and
- stuff. Also, I'd like to thank my company for recently firing my boss. I
- got your chair and most of your stuff, you dirtbag! I'd also like to
- specifically omit my friend Chas, for getting me a truly horrible blind
- date. It cost me 85 bucks, man!
-
- "Not unless you think ROUND is funny."
-
- Bob "Holy Evanderfield" Roberds / Development and drinking too
- much.
- David "Dr. K" Kotomski / Documentation & Testing and not admitting
- that he also drinks too much.
