  34.                 I. WHAT IS MEGA EDIT (TM)?  
  35.  
  36.   Mega Edit (TM) is a Windows 3.0/3.1 application.  Mega Edit (TM)is a 
  37.   powerful ASCII text editor.  It is designed specifically to facilitate 
  38.   complex editing tasks involving multiple and/or large files, where such 
  39.   tasks would be difficult or impossible with other editors currently 
  40.   available for MS Windows 3.0/3.1.

  42.   SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:
  43.   Mega Edit (TM) requires Microsoft Windows 3.0 or 3.1 running in STANDARD 
  44.   MODE OR HIGHER.  Also, a VGA, SVGA, or XVGA or other high resolution 
  45.   monitor is recommended, as is a mouse.

  47.   FILES INCLUDED WITH MEGA EDIT (TM):

  49.   MEGAEDIT.EXE -- application executable file.  
  50.   MEGAEDIT.HLP -- application on-line help.
  51.   MEGAED.DLL   -- Mega Edit (TM) dynamic link library.
  52.   COMMDLG.DLL  -- Windows 3.1 Common Dialog library.  This file also
  53.                   comes with Windows 3.1.  You can delete the Mega 
  54.                   Edit (TM) copy if you are using Windows 3.1.

  64.                 II. SETTING UP MEGA EDIT (TM) ON YOUR SYSTEM
  65.  
  66.   STEP 1. Make a separate directory anywhere on your system and store ALL
  67.   of the distribution files that are part of Mega Edit (TM) in that 
  68.   directory.  If you are using Windows 3.1, you may want to delete the copy 
  69.   of COMMDLG.DLL that is supplied with Mega Edit (TM) - it is already 
  70.   supplied with Windows 3.1.  It is generally best to keep all the
  71.   distribution files together in the same directory.

  73.   STEP 2. Install the Mega Edit (TM) executable file 'MEGAEDIT.EXE' in a 
  74.   Program Manager application folder. If you do not know how to do this, 
  75.   please see your Microsoft Windows 3.x documentation.

  77.   STEP 3. To RUN Mega Edit (TM), select the Mega Edit (TM) icon by either
  78.   double-clicking on it with your mouse, or cursor to the icon and hit the
  79.   ENTER key.

  81.                 III.  UPGRADING YOUR REGISTRATION
  82.  
  83.   If you already have a registered version of Mega Edit (TM) at version
  84.   2.01 or later you can automatically upgrade your registration
  85.   to this level with these shareware files.  To do so:
  86.   
  87.   STEP 1.  Copy in all of the files from this shareware release into
  88.   your Mega Edit (TM) directory.  
  89.  
  90.   STEP 2.  Delete these shareware only .TXT files:

  92.         READ1ST.TXT
  93.         README.TXT     (Not to be confused with READ_ME.TXT)
  94.         REGISTER.TXT
  95.         REG_FORM.TXT
  96.         VENDOR.TXT
  97.         FILE_ID.DIZ
  98.         
  99.   You should retain these two .TXT files:
  100.  
  101.         READ_ME.TXT  - From your original registration.
  102.         RELEASE.TXT  - Updated with this shareware release.
  103.  
  104.   STEP 3.  If you are running Windows 3.1, you will probably not
  105.   need COMMDLG.DLL - it is included with Windows 3.1.  You can 
  106.   delete if you like.

  109.                 IV. TROUBLE SHOOTING
  110.  
  111.   1. YOU DON'T LIKE THE DEFAULT OPENING SIZE OF THE MEGA EDIT SCREEN.
  112.  
  113.   Mega Edit decides on its opening screen size by checking the
  114.   value set in the Options/Preferences dialog box for word-wrap/
  115.   'right margin at:'.  The size selected will be just large enough
  116.   to accommodate the margin.  If you increase or decrease this value,
  117.   Mega Edit will change its opening size accordingly.  To modify this
  118.   setting, select 'Preferences' from the 'Options' menu.

  120.   2. PROBLEMS WITH GENERAL PROTECTION FAULT WHEN MEGA EDIT STARTS.
  121.  
  122.   We have had several reports of this, and all have been traced
  123.   to the user's launching Mega Edit from versions of the "Norton
  124.   Desktop for Windows" (TM) prior to version 2.0.  Versions of "Norton 
  125.   Desktop for Windows" (TM) prior to 2.0 are incompatible with Mega Edit.  
  126.   If you have this problem, try running Mega Edit directly from the 
  127.   Program Manager, or using the File Manager.  In most cases, this will 
  128.   eliminate the problem.

  130.   3. PROBLEMS RETAINING PREFERENCE SETTINGS FROM SESSION TO SESSION
  131.  
  132.   If for some reason you do not have a standard windows directory
  133.   structure, with a directory called /windows/system, you may have some
  134.   problems operating Mega Edit (TM).  It would be recommended that you create
  135.   a sub-directory of whatever directory it is that holds your main windows
  136.   executable files called 'system'.  This should resolve any problems.

  140.                    III. TIPS ON USING MEGA EDIT (TM)
  141.  
  142.   Mega Edit (TM) includes an extensive on-line help system.  Documentation
  143.   contained in the on-line system explains every feature of the product.
  144.   You can invoke on-line help by pressing the F1 function key any time
  145.   after you have started the editor.  
  146.  
  147.   The on-line Help system is organized to be practical and concise.  Using
  148.   the browse feature, it is possible to read every topic that it contains
  149.   in 30 minutes or less.  It is recommended strongly that you read through
  150.   the topics in the main index entitled "Up and Running".  These provide a
  151.   good overview of Mega Edit (TM) features.  Although "reading the manual" 
  152.   has become a lost art these days, (generally with good reason!), you are
  153.   encouraged to spend 30 minutes reading the on-line reference to the
  154.   product.  You shouldn't have any problem understanding the product or its
  155.   features anytime thereafter.

  157.   New user's should note that Mega Edit (TM) has some special, extended
  158.   features to support complex editing tasks that involve many and/or large
  159.   files.  Again, please have a good look at 'Up and Running Topics' in
  160.   the on-line help system.
