- Welcome to the Internet File Formats Companion CD-ROM.
-
- The idea behind this CD is to give you a solid
- foundation of applications that will give you access
- to the wide variety of file types floating around
- on the Internet.
-
- This CD is split into directories representing the
- major types of files described in the book.
-
- Here are the main directories:
-
- COMPRESS File compression/decompression programs
- ENCODING File encode/decode software
- GRAPHCIS Image editing/transfer applications
- SOUND Audio players, recoders, and editors
- TEXT document viewers, editors, and converters
- VIDEO Video and animation software
-
- Each main directory is divided into subdirectories
- that represent individual file types. These subdirectories
- are then split into system types (Windows, Mac, UNIX, etc..)
- Finally, each operating system may have several different
- applications for the file type you are interested in. These
- applications will each have their own directory.
-
- Many of the applications can be run straight from the CD,
- while others need to be installed onto your hard drive.
- Check the documentation files for the related program before
- you try and run it.
-
- Most of the applications on this CD are shareware, so it is
- up to you to make sure that the authors of the program are
- compensated if you decide to use their program on an ongoing
- basis. Once again, check the documentation files that are
- related to the application you are using to find out what
- the restrictions and regulations are.
-
- Finally, if you find software on this CD that is useful to
- you, you may want to check and see if there is a newer
- version available. Many times, the authors of these programs
- will include e-mail and Web site addresses in the readme or
- help files. If you have trouble finding any information that
- way, here is a condensed list of some of the best places to
- look on the Internet for useful applications:

- Special note for UNIX users:
-
- All of the UNIX files have been stored as
- compressed files. Standard decompression programs
- should work.
