- ARJVIEW 1.30 - page 03
- 1. INTRODUCTION
-
- Data compression is now becoming very popular. But most of the known
- compression programs are working only with the command line. I think this
- operating on the command line in a frequent work is unpractical. And that's
- why I tried to create a program to operate archives. This program works with
- archives of the best archiver I've ever seen - ARJ by Robert K. Jung.
-
- Some of the main abilities of the ARJVIEW 1.30 are:
- - Decompressing algorithms are built in the program in order to make the
- program faster.
- - The environment of the program is similar to the environment of the
- Viewers from Norton Commander 3.9.
- - You can simply choose the files you want to extract.
- - Testing function to check integrity of files stored in archive.
- - Viewing function to view selected file in the appropriate viewer of the
- Norton Commander 3.0.
- - Deleting function to delete selected files from the archive.
- - Viewing function for the archive and file comments.
- - Database function to create a simple database file with some handy
- informations about each file from the archive.
- - Report function to create a raw ASCII list of names of selected files.
- - Reread function to change to another volume (disk) or another archive.
- - Order function to sort files on the screen by name, extension, size or
- time.
- - Full mouse support.
-
- 1.1. HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS
-
- The ARJVIEW program is designed for IBM PC's and compatible computers with
- processors 8088, 8086, 80286, 80386 and i486. MS-DOS 3.0 or later is required
- and Norton Commander 3.0 is highly recommended. The Norton Commander is not
- necessary in order to work with ARJVIEW, but significantly improves use of
- this program. This program drives the hardware of the display adapter
- directly, so this program won't work in the remote mode on local networks. In
- order to operate this program without memory problems I recommend at least
- 200KB of the free conventional memory. You may also need any version of the
- ARJ program by Robert K. Jung. This program is not necessary, if you have
- already some ARJ archives created.
-
-
- ARJVIEW 1.30 - page 04
- 1.2. USER SUPPORTED SOFTWARE
-
- This program is a shareware program for personal use. If you want to use this
- program after reasonable evaluation period, send a registration order to the
- following address:
- Jakub Jelínek
- Mezivrsí 35
- 147 00 PRAGUE 4
- CZECHOSLOVAKIA
-
- To do this use the registration form from the special file ARJVIEW.FRM or, if
- you are a Czechoslovak citizen, from ARJVWCS.FRM. This form includes pricing
- informations.
-
- Making copies of the ARJVIEW program for other or uploading to electronic
- bulletin boards (BBS) is allowed and you are encouraged to do this as long as
- is the program transferred in his entirety and without any modifications. If
- you would want to upload ARJVIEW to your favorite BBS, use please the
- original file ARJVW130.EXE in that shape you received them.
-
- 1.3. CONTENT OF THE ARJVW130.EXE ARCHIVE
-
- The ARJVW130.EXE is the self-extraction form of the ARJ-type archive. This
- archive contents the following files:
- - ARJVIEW.EXE ; ARJVIEW program file
- - ARJVIEW.DOC ; This User's Manual
- - ARJVIEW.FRM ; Registration form for ARJVIEW
- - ARJVWCS.FRM ; Registration form for Czechoslovak citizens only
-
- 1.4. MODIFICATION HISTORY
-
- In ARJVIEW 1.30 were added and improved following functions:
- - Added empty directories support.
- - Added backup type of archives support.
- - Added summary line for the whole archive with the sum of all lengths, etc.
- - Added Order function to sort files on the screen.
- - Fixed bug with testing in archives, that have more than 128 files.
- - Fixed handling with zero length files.
-
- In ARJVIEW 1.21 from December, 15th, 1991 were fixed these bugs:
- - Fixed bug in handling with more than 128 files in the archive. Now is
- ARJVIEW operating well with all ARJ archives with up to 500 files.
- - Fixed bug in the PgDn movement.
- - Fixed archive position displaying in 43, 50, 60 lines modes.
- - Fixed bug with displaying of some comments.
-
- ARJVIEW 1.30 - page 05
- In ARJVIEW 1.20 from November, 19th, 1991 were added and improved following
- functions:
- - Significantly speeded up displaying.
- - Added viewing function for archive and file comments.
- - Added support of high display modes for EGA, VGA and SVGA adapters, i.e.
- support of 80x43 and 80x50 modes known in Norton Commander as 'EGA lines'.
- - Significantly improved the program help.
-
- In ARJVIEW 1.16 from October, 6th, 1991 were added and improved following
- functions:
- - Significantly improved and speeded up reading of SFX (self-extracting)
- archives (.EXE extension).
- - Speeded up viewing of files using external viewers.
- - Significantly revised documentation.
- - A lot of internal improvements.
-
- In ARJVIEW 1.15 from July, 7th, 1991 were added and improved following
- functions:
- - Added DataBase function for creating a DBF file with some handy
- informations about each file stored in the archive.
- - Added List function for creating a raw ASCII list of file names from the
- archive.
- - Fixed problem with extracting and viewing of files with the size less than
- 512B.
- - Improved design of dialog boxes during breaking of process.
- - Changed the default button in the query on overwriting from SKIP to OVER.
-
- ARJVIEW 1.14 from June, 20th, 1991 was the first public version of this
- viewer.
-
- 2. GETTING STARTED
-
- I assume you received a copy of self-extracting archive ARJVW130.EXE. Run
- this program in order to get all ARJVIEW files (program file, this file and
- both order forms) in the current directory.
-
- To run the ARJVIEW program simply enter ARJVIEW [archive]. If you enter only
- ARJVIEW <ENTER>, you'll get the following message:
-
- ARJ View 1.30 Copyright (c) 1991,1992 Jakub Jelínek
-
- Usage ARJVIEW archive[.arj]
-
- ARJVIEW 1.30 - page 06
- This message explains the syntax of the ARJVIEW program. Expression in square
- bracket is optional. 'archive' can include the whole pathspec, so if you want
- to view archive FIDONEWS.ARJ in the directory C:\FIDO, you will enter:
-
- ARJVIEW \FIDO\FIDONEWS or ARJVIEW \FIDO\FIDONEWS.ARJ
-
- because the extension of ARJ is the default extension. But if you want to
- view an self-extraction SFX archive with the extension of EXE, you'll have to
- enter both the name and the extension:
-
- ARJVIEW \FIDO\FIDONEWS.EXE
-
- If you have at the moment no one ARJ-type archive available, you can try all
- the functions of the ARJVIEW program on the distribution archive ARJVW130.EXE
- (rather on the backup copy of'em, if you want to try the deleting functions).
- You'll simply enter on the command line:
-
- ARJVIEW ARJVW130.EXE
-
- and you'll get to the environment of the ARJVIEW program.
-
- 2.1. INSTALLATION
-
- If you are an owner of the Norton Commander 3.0, you can install ARJVIEW as
- a standard viewer for all ARJ archives.
-
- The installation is very simple. Run Norton Commander 3.0 and add the
- following line to the very end of the extension file in Norton Commander
- (NC.EXT). In order to edit this file press sequentially the following keys:
- F9 C X
- Than add this line below all other lines:
-
- A??: ARJVIEW !:!\!.!
-
- Be sure all extensions in the extension file, that begin with the A letter,
- are in NC.EXT before this extension (e.g. ASM). Then press Shift-F10 to save
- this extension file and quit editing. Than edit your AUTOEXEC.BAT file and
- add the path to ARJVIEW.EXE to the PATH statement. Make sure, that
- ARJVIEW.DOC is in the same path as ARJVIEW.EXE (it is needed for the 'Manual'
- function).
- Now, whenever you click the left mouse button or press ENTER on the ARJ
- archive (and also on all other ARJ volume extensions, i.e. A01 to A99),
- you'll get to ARJVIEW. See Norton Commander 3.0. manual for additional
- informations on extension file.
-
- ARJVIEW 1.30 - page 07
- 3. OPERATING ARJVIEW
-
- Operating of the ARJVIEW program is similar to the operating of other Viewers
- supplied with Norton Commander 3.0, e.g. WPVIEW.EXE or DBVIEW.EXE. If you are
- able to work with WPVIEW, you'll be certainly able to operate ARJVIEW as
- well. The most of the program functions can be accessed either via keyboard,
- or via mouse, except 'Select' and 'Unselect' a group of files functions, that
- can be accessed via Gray + or Gray - only. But this selection can be done
- with mouse as well, if you want to select files sequentially.
-
- 3.1. MOVEMENT CONTROL
-
- If you are in the ARJVIEW environment, you can use following keys in order to
- move among the files stored in the archive:
-
- ┌───────────────────────┬──────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
- │ up and down arrow │ Moves the inverted bar (current file) one file │
- │ │ up or down. │
- ├───────────────────────┼──────────────────────────────────────────────────┤
- │ PgUp, PgDn keys │ Moves the inverted bar one page up or down. │
- ├───────────────────────┼──────────────────────────────────────────────────┤
- │ Home, End keys │ Moves the inverted bar to the first or to the │
- │ │ last file in archive. │
- ├───────────────────────┼──────────────────────────────────────────────────┤
- │ left mouse button │ Moves the inverted bar to the file, to which is │
- │ │ the mouse cursor pointing. │
- └───────────────────────┴──────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
-
- 3.2. SELECTING OF FILES
-
- You can select some files in archive or unselect these files in order to
- specify an argument for some functions described below. These functions work
- either with all selected files, or with the current file, if no one is
- selected. This behavior is related to F5 Rename, F7 Melt, Shift-F7 Melt..,
- F8 Delete and F9 Test. Functions F6 and Shift-F6 !require! some selected
- files in order to get a database or a list, that is not empty.
-
- ARJVIEW 1.30 - page 08
- 3.2.1. SELECTING OF SINGLE FILES
-
- The following keys and mouse button serve to select single files:
- ┌───────────────────────┬──────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
- │ Insert key │ Toggles selection status of the current file and │
- │ │ moves one file down. (Like 'Insert moves down' │
- │ │ in Norton Commander 3.0). │
- ├───────────────────────┼──────────────────────────────────────────────────┤
- │ right mouse button │ If you just press the right mouse button, the │
- │ │ program will toggle selection status of the file │
- │ │ under mouse cursor. If you hold the the right │
- │ │ mouse button and move up/down, all files you'll │
- │ │ shift on will be either selected or not │
- │ │ selected, depending on the selection status of │
- │ │ the file you pressed the right mouse button on. │
- └───────────────────────┴──────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
-
- 3.2.2. SELECTING OF A GROUP
-
- If you press the Gray + key, you'll get a small dialog box with the query on
- the wildcard name of the group of files to be selected. The default
- specification is *.*, i.e. select all the files.
- The Gray - key is like Gray + key. The only difference is, that with Gray -
- you are unselecting a group of files.
-
- 3.3. FUNCTION KEYS
-
- Functions of ARJVIEW can be called using function keys or using the mouse in
- the function bar at bottom of the screen. Some of the functions are
- accessible via Shift key and function key only.
-
- 3.3.1. HELP FUNCTION - F1 key
-
- The help is longer than one screen, so you have to scroll using PgUp, PgDn,
- Home, End and up/down arrows or using the mouse.
- If you want to know more about any function, you can select Manual function
- in the Help dialog box. You'll see this manual in the text viewer. This
- manual has to be in the same directory as ARJVIEW.EXE.
-
- 3.3.2. INFORMATION RELATED TO THE CURRENT FILE - Shift + F1 key
-
- This function shows full filename including full path of the current file,
- original size, compressed size, ratio (compressed/original), type of the
- file, compression method, date/time of modification, archiver version,
- minimum version to extract (should be 1), operating system, garbling status,
- volume options, CRC (cyclic redundancy code), translation of the path in
- filename, backup flag. For meaning of these values please refer to the
- ARJ.DOC user's manual from the ARJ package.
-
- ARJVIEW 1.30 - page 09
- 3.3.3. MULTIPLE VOLUMES OPERATING - F2 and Shift+F2 keys
-
- This functions serve to the reading of next/previous volumes or other
- archives. If you press F2, you'll get a dialog box with the name of the
- current archive and extension of the next volume (e.g. .A01, if you are
- viewing .ARJ at the moment). Certainly you can edit the name, extension
- and/or path in order to read another archive. If you press Shift+F2, you'll
- get the same dialog box, but the extension'll be of the previous volume (for
- example .ARJ, if you are viewing .A01 at the moment).
-
- 3.3.4. VIEWING OF THE CURRENT FILE - F3 key
-
- The F3 function lets you see current file in the appropriate Viewer from the
- Norton Commander 3.0. These Viewers must be in the path of the PATH
- statement. If you haven't the Norton Commander, you'll have to copy/rename
- your favourite viewer to the names listed below.
-
- ┌─────────────────────┬──────────────────────┬──────────────────────────────┐
- │ Name of the Viewer │ File extensions │ Type of files │
- ├─────────────────────┼──────────────────────┼──────────────────────────────┤
- │ PCXVIEW.EXE │ .PCX │ Pictures in ZSoft's format │
- │ PARAVIEW.EXE │ .DB │ Database files from Paradox │
- │ DBVIEW.EXE │ .DBF │ Database files from DBase │
- │ REFVIEW.EXE │ .RXD │ │
- │ RBVIEW.EXE │ .RBF │ │
- │ ARJVIEW.EXE │ .ARJ .A01 - .A99 │ ARJ archives; you can view │
- │ │ │ archives recursively │
- │ 123VIEW.EXE │ .WK1 .WKQ .WKS .WKT │ Spreadsheet files from │
- │ │ .WR1 .WRK .XLS │ Excel/Lotus │
- │ WPVIEW.EXE │ any other │ Text/Hexadecimal Viewer │
- └─────────────────────┴──────────────────────┴──────────────────────────────┘
-
- If you encounter critical error during viewing, please look for the
- subdirectory named ~ARJ~VIE.~$~ in the current directory. If it exists,
- delete the whole content of this subdirectory and the subdirectory as well.
-
- Also remember, that it is better to start ARJVIEW from the disk with enough
- place, because ARJVIEW creates a temporary file on the current disk.
- Next version of ARJVIEW will have a setup in order to select the drive you
- want to store temporary files on.
-
- 3.3.5. VIEWING OF COMMENTS - F4 and Shift-F4 keys
-
- If you want to see the archive comment, press F4 and scroll in the comment.
- Scrolling keys are the same as in the F1 function. If you want to see file
- comment of the current file, just press Shift+F4 instead of F4.
-
- ARJVIEW 1.30 - page 10
- 3.3.6. CREATING OF A DATABASE FILE - F6 key
-
- If you want to make a database of files in the archive, select files to add
- to the database and press F6. The database file will be created on the same
- place as archive and with the same name, but with the .DBF extension. The
- database file contents following fields:
- FILENAME name of the file from archive
- ORIGSIZE original (uncompressed) size of the file
- COMPSIZE size of the compressed file
- RATIO COMPSIZE / ORIGSIZE
- DATE date of last modification
- TIME time of last modification
- CRC full 32-bit CRC (cyclic redundancy code) in hexadecimal
- format
- ATTR file attributes
- T file type (B - binary, T - text, D - directory, V - volume)
- P full path flag
- M compression method number
- G garble flag
- V files is continued on next volume
- X files is extended portion from previous volume
- COMMENT file comment (first 255 characters)
-
- If you press F6 with no files selected, you'll get empty database!!
-
- 3.3.7. CREATING OF THE FILE LIST - Shift-F6 key
-
- This function is similar to the previous, but creates a raw ASCII list .LST
- with names of selected files separated by CR/LF.
-
- 3.3.8. EXTRACTING (MELTING) OF FILES - F7 and Shift+F7 keys
-
- This function will extract selected files, or the current file, if no files
- are selected. You will be prompted for the destination path for these files.
- The path must be entered in DOS conventions. If any of the directories or
- subdirectories don't exist, you will be asked for the permission to create
- them. The only difference between F7 and Shift-F7 is, that in F7 are files
- extracted to one directory only, no matter on the path stored in the archive,
- but in Shift-F7 they are extracted with full path stored in archive. F7 is
- like 'ARJ e .......' command and Shift-F7 like 'ARJ x ...........' command.
-
- ARJVIEW 1.30 - page 11
- 3.3.9. DELETING OF SELECTED FILES FROM THE ARCHIVE - F8 key
-
- This function deletes selected files (or current file, if no one is selected)
- form the archive. You'll be asked for permission to delete these files. Be
- sure you have enough disk space on the disk the archive is stored on, because
- ARJVIEW creates the temporary file at the same place as archive. Future
- versions will have an option to select the disk for temporary files.
- If you encounter an critical error during deleting (I hope it won't be very
- common), please look for the files named ~ARJ~VIE.~_~ and ~ARJ~VIE.~_1 in the
- directory of the original archive. If there are these files, the larger one
- will be probably the original archive and the shorter one will be the archive
- with some deleted files.
-
- 3.3.10. CHECKING OF FILE INTEGRITY - F9 key
-
- Function F9 is used to check the integrity of selected files or of the
- current file, if no one is selected. It compares the stored 32-bit CRC with
- the real CRC of the file. If it find an error, you will be warn about them.
- This function is just extracting to the memory only, so it is much faster and
- you won't need free disk space to check the integrity of the files.
-
- 3.3.11. FILE SORTING ON THE SCREEN - Shift+F9 key
-
- This function was added to simplify searching and selecting of files. You
- will choose one of the sort modes and all files from the archive will be
- sorted on the screen. Sorting modes are following:
- by filename (descending or ascending order)
- by extension (descending or ascending order)
- by original length (descending or ascending order)
- by time (descending or ascending order)
- original order (as stored in the archive)
-
- 3.3.12. END OF WORK WITH ARJVIEW - Esc and F10 keys
-
- If you want to quit this program, press either Esc or F10 key while not in
- the dialog box. The screen will become it's previous state.
-
- ARJVIEW 1.30 - page 12
- 4. FORMAT OF INFORMATIONS DISPLAYED BY ARJVIEW

- 4.1.1. FLAGS
-
- Flags are short parameters of files. In the picture are they written as
- btpmgvx. Each of this letters is substituted by one character as follows:
-
- b backup type flag (improvement in ARJ 2.30, see ARJ.DOC)
- possible values:
- * file is a backup copy
- BLANK file is not a backup copy
-
- t type of the file
- possible values:
- B binary type
- T text type
- ? unknown type
- D directory
- V volume label
-
- p full path flag
- possible values:
- + file has the full path stored in the archive
- BLANK file has not the full path stored in the archive
-
- m type of the compression
- possible values:
- 0 file is stored
- 1 full (maximal) compression
- 2 slightly less compression
- 3 less compression
- 4 fastest compression
-
- g garble flag
- possible values:
- G file is garbled
- BLANK file is not garbled
-
- v volume flag
- possible values:
- V file continues on the next volume
- BLANK file ends in this archive
-
- x extended flag
- possible values:
- X file is an extended portion of the previous volume
- BLANK file begins in this archive
-
- ARJVIEW 1.30 - page 14
- 4.1.2. FILE ATTRIBUTES
-
- Each of the letters in ashr from the format line is substituted by one
- character as follows:
-
- a archived file
- possible values:
- A file has the archived bit set
- - this bit is cleared
-
- s system file
- possible values:
- S file is a system file
- - file is not a system file
-
- h hidden file
- possible values:
- H file is hidden
- - file is not hidden
-
- r read only flag
- R file is read-only
- W file is not read-only
-
- 4.1.3. OTHER FILE RELATED INFORMATIONS
-
- Through the format line in 4.1. are used following letters and expressions.
- They will be replaced by:
-
- d any decimal digit
- e any hexadecimal digit
- FILENAME is the 8 characters long filename
- EXT is the 3 characters long file extension
-
- Ratio is the value of Compsize / Origsize. It means, that a ratio of 0.151 is
- quite good compression factor, but 1.000 is a zero compression (storing).
-
- 4.2. STATUS LINE FORMAT
-
- Here is a schema of the status line in ARJVIEW, that is located at the top of
- the screen:
-
- ARJ View nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn Selected zzzzzzzzzz B in sss files ppp%
- │ │ │ │
- The name of the archive you are viewing │ │ │
- The sum of sizes of selected files │ │
- The number of selected files │
- Current position in archive in percents.

- 4.3. SUMMARY LINE FORMAT
-
- Summary line is located above the function bar at the screen bottom. Its
- format is follows:
-
- [Archive] dddddddddd dddddddddd d.ddd dd-dd-dd dd:dd:dd b v
- │ │ │ │ │ │ │

- │ │ │ │ time of archive creation
- │ │ │ date of archive creation
- │ │ summary ratio
- │ sum of all compressed sizes
- sum of all original sizes
-
- where v can be
- V archive is continued by next volume
- BLANK archive is the last one in the archive chain
-
- b can be
- * archive is a backup type archive
- BLANK archive is not a backup type archive
-
- and summary ratio is (sum of all compressed sizes / sum of all original sizes)

- 8. TERMINOLOGY
-
- ARCHIVE This is a file containing one or more files in a compressed
- or non-compressed state and containing file related
- informations such as filename and date-time last modified,
- etc.
-
- FREEZING The process of encoding redundant information into data
- requiring less storage space.
-
- MELTING The processing of recreating the exact information that was
- previously compressed.
-
- RATIO The percentage compression reported by ARJ is a variation of
- one of the TWO standard methods of expressing compression
- ratio in the technical literature. ARJ uses Compressed size
- / Original size ratio. The other method is the inverse ratio.
- When ARJ reports 96% as the compression ratio, it means, that
- the compressed file is 96 percent of the original size (very
- little compression). Other archivers use their own methods.
- LHA by Haruyasu Yoshizaki uses the same ratio as ARJ.
