- ============
-
- Here is a list of the new features of WinBiff 4.0:
-
- o Filters can be used to prevent notification of low-priority
- mail, and to delete unwanted mail, such as "spam".
-
- o In the 32-bit version, WinBiff checks a specific dialup
- connection, rather than a COM port, before polling.
- WinBiff can dial and hangup the connection.
-
- o The WAVBase checks raw as well as processed headers.
- "From" and "From or Subject" strings are checked against
- Sender: headers, when they exist.
-
- o For Notes, accented characters in headers are displayed
- correctly.
-
- o Pegasus Mail messages on disk are correctly recognized as
- already read when the X-PMFLAGS: header so indicates, even
- though a Status: header may not indicate the message has
- been read.
-
- o In the 32-bit version, network errors are not shown in the
- event of disconnection during a poll. In the 16-bit version,
- such errors are not shown if the "Check COM port" option is
- used.
-
- o Eliminated spurious notifications for POP3 and IMAP4 when all
- messages are already-read on the first poll.
-
- o For MIME headers containing quoted-printable text, underscores
- are properly translated to spaces.
-
- o The Setup dialog appears correctly when using large fonts
- in the Windows desktop.
-
- o After deletion of a WAVBase entry, the current entry is
- now correctly displayed.
-
- o For Windows 3.1 and Windows NT 3.5, eliminated undesired
- screen artefacts when the icon is hidden over desktop
- wallpaper.
-
- Version 3.9b:
-
- o For Pegasus Mail files, when using the PMail/NetWare or
- Disk file message sources, the X-PMFLAGS header is now used to
- recognize already-read mail.
-
- o The file browser in the Setup remembers the last directory
- visited. This is particularly useful when creating
- several WAVBase entries.
-
- o If the Minimize on reader launch option is chosen, and the
- mail reader is already running, clicking on WinBiff to restore
- or activate the reader will minimize WinBiff.
-
- o Up to five digits are allowed when specifying a polling
- interval. For 16-bit WinBiff, the maximum polling interval
- is 65,535 seconds. For 32-bit WinBiff, the maximum is
- 99,999 seconds.
-
- o For POP3 and IMAP4, the shutdown at the end of each poll is
- more graceful. Improved general WinSock error handling.
-
- o A window redraw bug that sometimes occurred when using the
- Disk file or PMail/NetWare message sources has been fixed.
-
- Version 3.9a:
-
- o InstallShield installation added, which allows convenient
- uninstall
-
- o Stay on top option added
-
- o Window caption indicates polling
-
- o Icon optionally blinks during polling. In Windows 3.1
- and Windows NT 3.51, it is actually the icon caption that
- blinks.
-
- o Support for custom POP3 and IMAP4 ports added
-
- o For Notes, if bad records are encountered, WinBiff
- now continues to poll, instead of aborting.
-
- o Web, email, and ordinary mail addresses for contacting author
- updated in documentation
-
- Version 3.9:
-
- o You can now specify a start directory for the mail
- reader.
-
- o Notes 3.x mailboxes are again supported, using the
- Received by Category view by default. Other views
- can be specified.
-
- o In the 32-bit version, mouse-clicking on the colored
- icon and text areas in the Color tab now properly
- adjusts the color scrollbars.
-
- o The appearance of the mail reader and network pages in
- the setup has been cleaned up in the 16-bit version.
-
- Version 3.8a:
-
- o A new option, Detect running reader, detects the mail
- reader even if you haven't launched it from WinBiff.
- This option is especially useful in conjunction with
- the Suspend polling option. It also prevents accidentally
- launching a second instance of your reader by clicking
- on WinBiff.
-
- Version 3.8:
-
- o The Notes support has been completely rewritten to use
- the C API, instead of VIM. Setup for Notes should be
- much easier, and mail polling more reliable. Error messages
- that occur during polling can be suppressed.
-
- o For Message Sources that require passwords, the password
- can be prompted for, rather than storing it in the
- .INI file. This option gives enhanced security protection.
-
- o For POP3 and IMAP4, a COM port can be checked before each
- poll. Using this option, if you terminate or lose your
- modem connection, WinBiff will not display unwanted error
- messages.
-
- o For cc:Mail, when VIM errors occur, additional diagnostic
- information now appears in the popup error boxes.
-
- o In the 32-bit version, there are now separate default
- 16x16 icons for display in the system tray. If you use
- custom 32x32 icons, those will still be displayed in
- compressed form in the system tray.
-
- o WinBiff now includes a utility, KILLWBF.EXE (16-bit) or
- KILLWB32 (32-bit), which safely shuts down all running
- instances of the program. This utility is useful for
- logout scripts. WinBiff now will shut down on receipt of
- WM_CLOSE messages, so it should behave properly when
- using other shutdown utilities.
-
- o PageUp and PageDown in the header window now scroll a full
- page, instead of a single line.
-
- o The bug that complained of a missing profile for Windows
- Messaging on initial setup has been fixed.
-
- o The titlebar-only window problem that occasionally occurred
- in the 32-bit version has been fixed.
-
- o A bug in the IMAP4 protocol implementation that generated
- occasional erroneous error messages has been fixed. Another
- IMAP4 bug that sometimes resulted in spurious FETCH messages to
- be sent has been fixed.
-
- Version 3.7:
-
- o The Setup has been completely rewritten, using a page metaphor.
- Users should find the new setup easier to understand. Also,
- this arrangement will make it easier to add new features in the
- future.
-
- o Code for the new Setup has been placed in a dynamic library,
- WBFSETUP.DLL in the 16-bit version, and WBFSTP32.DLL in the
- 32-bit version. The library is loaded only when in use.
- Moving the code out of the .EXE's means they are about 20%
- smaller than before -- the 16-bit version now is only 74K,
- and the 32-bit version is only 106K. System administrators
- can remove the .DLL's to prevent users from modifying settings.
-
- o In the WAVBase, strings can be used to match either the From
- line, the Subject line, or both. Matching now occurs on the
- string that is displayed, rather than the raw header, to make
- it clear what is being matched.
-
- o An option, "Play WAVs just once", has been added.
-
- o Network timeout options are now adjustable from within the Setup.
-
- o The "Exit" menu item is now optional.
-
- o A new option, "Minimize on reader launch", has been added.
-
- o The desktop color can be selected via a button in the Colors
- page/tab in the Setup.
-
- o Alt-F10 is used as an accelerator key for the Clear and Show
- menu items.
-
- o Profiles for MS Exchange and Windows Messaging appear in a
- dropdown list in the Setup (32-bit version only).
-
- o GroupWise mail is now supported, using Simple MAPI.
