  2. AFE - Archive Front End, a Cheap(!) native OS/2 2.1x VX-REXX program
  3. which provides a visual front end for the handling of ZIP, LZH, ZOO
  4. and ARJ files.

  10. Installation
  11.  
  12. With version 2.4, AFE reads the users settings in a whole new way, and
  13. upgraders should proceed just as with a new installation.  If upgrading
  14. from 2.4 to 2.41 you can simply overwrite AFE.EXE and VROBJ.DLL with the
  15. same named files included in this package.

  17.     1. UnZIP AFE241.ZIP.  If you're reading this, you've probably
  18.        already done that.
  19.   
  20.     2. Type AFE-INST from the directory where all the unzipped files are
  21.        located.  This program will prompt you for the path to where you
  22.        want AFE installed and a directory where you want the .DLL to be
  23.        installed.  This must be a directory that's in your LIBPATH
  24.        statement of your CONFIG.SYS.
  25.   
  26.        After the files are copied to their respective directories, the
  27.        installation program will create the desktop object for AFE, which
  28.        will have all the critical settings for proper operation of the
  29.        program.  Normally, the object will appear in the upper lefthand
  30.        corner of your screen.

  32.        AFE will automatically start and go directly to the settings note-
  33.        book.  The entry fields in the notebook support all the standard
  34.        editing functions supported in the WPS such as destructive
  35.        backspace, overwriting highlighted text, etc.  When you are
  36.        satisfied with all your entries, close the notebook and the main
  37.        program will restart.

  39.        If the meanings of the directory variables are not clear to you
  40.        with the explanations in the notebook, read the "running AFE"
  41.        section in AFE.DOC to understand how the the directories are used.
  42.        Note that you will get better performance from AFE if you do not
  43.        make the root directory of any drive your "ARC DIRECTORY" or
  44.        "PICK DIRECTORY".

  46.     3. (Optional) Set the font in "E" to SYSTEM VIO.  This makes
  47.        viewing plain text files easier because of its even spacing.

  49. I have the program object along the bottom of my Desktop since I use it
  50. everyday.  I use a Shareware File/directory manager that supports drag 'n
  51. drop from its file list which makes it super easy to start AFE by
  52. highlighting the file name and dragging it to my program icon.  Plus, if
  53. I want to run AFE from the main menu, I don't have to dig into a folder
  54. to start it.

  56. AFE is a copyrighted program.  It is not public domain or free
  57. software.  A limited license is granted for the purpose of determining
  58. suitability of the program.  Registration is required for any use
  59. beyond a 15 day evaluation period.  Registered user have the right to
  60. use this program for their personal use on one or more computers
  61. provided that only 1 copy is in use at the same time.

  63. After a couple of weeks of using AFE, you ought to know if it's the
  64. archive tool for you.  Fill out and print REG-FORM.AFE and make out a
  65. check.
