  29. 1.0     Introduction
  30.  
  31. This file contains last-minute updates that are not found in the User's
  32. Guide or in any addendum accompanying the display adapter.  Please read
  33. this file before proceeding with the installation.
  34.  
  35. For information on running the INSTALL program please refer to the following
  36. sections in your User's Guide:
  37.  
  38. - "Configuring the Hardware"
  39. - "Running the INSTALL Program"
  40.  
  41. GENERAL INFO for NEW INSTALLATIONS:
  42.  
  43. - In order to match your mach64 to your monitor and to your system
  44.   configuration, you must run "QUICK SETUP" before installing any
  45.   drivers.
  46. - Please follow the instructions in the "Selecting Your Monitor Type"
  47.   section of your User's Guide.
  48. - After running "QUICK SETUP", select "DRIVERS INSTALLATION" and use
  49.   <escape> to exit back to DOS.

  53. 2.0     Adapter Installation
  54.  
  55. Adapter installation, while greatly simplified through the INSTALL
  56. utility, requires a step by step methodical approach to ensure that the
  57. adapter does not conflict with other system resources and to ensure
  58. optimal performance.
  59.  
  60. The following technical information is a basic outline of the steps required
  61. to install an mach64 graphics adapter.
  62.  
  63. 1)  Upon removing the mach64 card from the box, record in your User's Guide,
  64.     the serial number (found on the non-component side of the card) and the
  65.     BIOS version (located on a white label on a plug-in BIOS chip on the
  66.     component side of the card).
  67.  
  68. 2)  The following port addresses are used by the mach64:
  69.  
  70.     102, 1CE, 1CF, 2EC-2EF, 3?4, 3?5, 3?8, 3?9, 3?A, 3?B, 3DC
  71.     and all aliases; 46E8 (?=B for monochrome, ?=D for color operations)
  72.  
  73.     Check the system hardware for internal modems, FAX cards or LAN cards
  74.     which may be using addresses at 2E8 or any other I/O address used by the
  75.     mach64.
  76.  
  77.     Also ensure that LAN cards, scanner cards and other peripheral adapters
  78.     are not using upper memory addresses between C000 and C7FF.
  79.  
  80.     If you have a system containing an on-board graphics controller, consult
  81.     your owners manual on how to disable it.
  82.  
  83.     Check and record how much system memory is installed on the system
  84.     motherboard.
  85.  
  86.  
  87. 3)  After powering down your system, remove your old graphics adapter (or
  88.     disable the on-board graphics controller) and plug-in the mach64.
  89.  
  90.     If the system fails to produce text on the monitor, return to Step 2
  91.     and re-check the installed hardware for address conflicts.
  92.  
  93.     If no obvious conflicts are present, carefully remove all non-
  94.     essential peripheral adapters (scanner, FAX/modem, audio, CD ROM cards,
  95.     etc.) to determine the nature of the conflict.
  96.  
  97.     As a last resort, if possible, see if the card works in a different
  98.     system.
  99.  
  100.  
  101. 4)  Once the system has properly booted, place Disk #1 of the supplied
  102.     mach64 disks into the appropriate disk drive and run the INSTALL
  103.     program.
  104.  
  105.     The INSTALL program may report that it has found the graphics card to
  106.     be in a "new or changed configuration".  If this message appears, press
  107.     any key to have the INSTALL program update the mach64 EEPROM.
  108.  
  109.     Also Install may report a conflict at I/O 2E8.  Refer to part 2 for
  110.     possible conflicts.
  111.  
  112.     NOTE: THE SCREEN WILL BE BLANKED FOR FEW SECOND DURING CONFIGURATION
  113.     CHANGE.
  114.  
  115.     The INSTALL program also checks for potential system conflicts.  The
  116.     "System Information" selection will list the graphics and system
  117.     configuration details.  You can also run this option from command line
  118.     by typing "INSTALL SYSINFO".
  119.

  122. 3.0     Installation Notes for Windows 3.1
  123.  
  124.  
  125. 1) Run INSTALL from Disk #1 of the mach64 diskettes.
  126.  
  127. 2) Select Drivers Installation from the Main Menu.
  128.  
  129. 3) From the Install Enhanced Drivers menu select Microsoft Windows.
  130.  
  131. 4) Select INSTALL Windows 3.1 driver:
  132.  
  133.     a) Select Display Drivers only
  134.        - if you have NOT installed Windows based multimedia applications
  135.          (e.g. Multimedia CD-ROMS, Video editing packages)
  136.  
  137.     b) Select Display Drivers + MVA drivers
  138.        - if you have installed Windows based multimedia applications
  139.          (e.g. Multimedia CD-ROMS, Video editing packages)
  140.  
  141. 5) Follow the screen instructions to completion.
  142.  
  143. 6) When INSTALL reports that the driver has been successfully installed,
  144.    exit the INSTALL program using the <escape> key.
  145.  
  146. 7) Start Windows, use the ATI Desktop icon to configure Windows for the
  147.    desired resolution and color depth.
  148.  
  149. Note:  If you wish to change the Windows' display driver, to a different
  150.        driver (i.e. VGA), do not use the Windows' Setup icon within Windows.
  151.        To change the display, exit Windows and change directory to the
  152.        Windows subdirectory.  When at the Windows prompt type SETUP and
  153.        select the desired display driver.
  154.  
  155. For further information regarding the mach64 Windows functions please use
  156. MS Write to read the MACH64.WRI file.  This Write file is located in the
  157. mach64\ATIDESK subdirectory (default), if the display driver has been
  158. previously installed.  New installations will find MACH64.WRI located in
  159. the ATI\ATIDESK subdirectory (default).
  160.  
  161. 3.1     Installation Notes for Windows For WorkGroups 3.11
  162.  
  163. Follow the Microsoft Windows 3.1 installation instructions.
  164.  
  165. The Super VGA 256 color drivers supplied with Microsoft Windows for
  166. WorkGroups 3.11 will not function correctly on a mach64 based card.
  167. These SVGA drivers appear to check for specific Super VGA adapter chip
  168. sets and incorrectly identifies the mach64 card as a SVGA adapter.
  169.  
  170. If you wish to use other Windows for WorkGroups supplied graphics drivers,
  171. you may select the VGA or Super VGA (800x600, 16 color) driver.

  175. 4.0     Installation Notes for AutoDesk products
  176.  
  177. Note:   The following applications are supported:
  178.         AutoCAD R10, R11, R12 (Protected Mode only); 3D Studio R2 and
  179.         AutoShade 386 with Renderman.
  180.  
  181. 1) Run INSTALL from Disk #1 of the mach64 diskettes.
  182.  
  183. 2) Select Drivers Installation from the Main Menu.
  184.  
  185. 3) From the Install Enhanced Drivers menu select one of the following:
  186.  
  187.         AutoCAD
  188.         AutoDesk 3D Studio
  189.         AutoShade
  190.  
  191. 4) Follow the screen instructions to completion.
  192.  
  193. 5) When the INSTALL reports that the driver has been successfully installed,
  194.    hit <escape> to exit the INSTALL program.
  195.  
  196. 6) All the AutoDesk products require environment variables to be loaded
  197.    prior to starting the application.  The INSTALL program creates
  198.    batch files that contain all the necessary SET statements.  These
  199.    batch files will be located in the directory specified during the
  200.    driver installation. The following are the default batch file names:
  201.  
  202.         AutoCAD R10, R11 and R12        ADIACAD.BAT
  203.         AutoDesk 3D Studio R2           ADI3DS.BAT
  204.         AutoShade with Renderman        ADISHADE.BAT
  205.  
  206. 7) After running the appropriate batch file, refer to your AutoDesk
  207.    documentation for information on how to select and reconfigure the
  208.    display driver.
  209.

  214.  
  215. 5.0     Installation Notes for OS/2
  216.  
  217. Note:  Attempting to execute the mach64 INSTALL program with a Com 4
  218.        device installed, will cause the system to hang.  Remove any
  219.        device that uses the base I/O 2E8, before running INSTALL.
  220.  
  221. 1) Insert disk #1 and run INSTALL from within a full screen DOS session
  222.    (under OS/2) and check "Advanced Setup", to ensure that you have
  223.    selected an appropriate monitor type:
  224.  
  225.     a) OS/2 requires that the 640x480 resolution be configured for the IBM
  226.        default 60Hz vertical refresh rate.
  227.     b) You must configure the card for all resolutions that your monitor
  228.        can support in order to have them functioning correctly under OS/2.
  229.        Only those resolutions that you have configured will display
  230.        correctly.
  231.  
  232. 2) Check The Minimized Window Viewer to see if you have any WIN-OS/2 or
  233.    DOS sessions iconized. Close them all as the INSTALL may not work
  234.    if a WIN-OS/2 session is running.
  235.  
  236. 3) From the INSTALL Main Menu, select Drivers Installation and pick IBM
  237.    OS/2.  Then follow the instructions given on the screen.
  238.  
  239. Note:  If PM Desktop does not reappear after exiting from the full screen
  240.        DOS session, pressing <Enter> will bring you back to full screen.
  241.        You must reboot to get back to the PM Desktop.
  242.  
  243. 4) When the mach64 driver is installed the SETVGA command will request the
  244.    mach64 drivers diskette to be inserted in to default installation drive.
  245.    SETVGA will not proceed without this diskette.  Use the following
  246.    procedure to create the required mach64 diskette:
  247.  
  248.    a) Boot DOS, or enter a full screen DOS session.
  249.    b) Insert a blank disk into drive A: (the bootable floppy drive)
  250.    c) Change directory to the directory created by the installation of
  251.       the mach64 OS2 drivers (default c:\MACH_OS2)
  252.    d) The mach64 disk must have a volume label of MACH64OS2. To create this
  253.       label, at the C:\MACH_OS2 (default) directory type:
  254.            LABEL A:
  255.       You will then see at prompt stating "Volume label (11 characters,
  256.       enter for none)?", please type:
  257.            MACH64OS2
  258.     e) Copy the contents of the MACH_OS2 directory onto the floppy disk.
  259.  
  260. 5) Run DSPINSTL from within an OS/2 window.
  261.  
  262. 6) When the Display Driver Install panel appears, select Primary Display
  263.    and click OK to bring up a list of choices.  You should see an option for
  264.    ATI mach64.
  265.  
  266. 7) Select 'ATI Technologies mach64' from the list and click OK. Ignore the
  267.    error message pop-up which says "The installed adapter does not support
  268.    the selected display driver.  Do you wish to continue?" and click OK.
  269.  
  270. 8) When the source directory panel appears, select 'Change' and enter:
  271.    C:\MACH_OS2 (replace c: with your boot drive letter if you don't use c)
  272.    Click 'Set' and then 'Install'. After the files are copied, exit the OS/2
  273.    window or full screen session. Shut down and restart your system.
  274.  
  275. 9) The PM driver will first come up in 640x480, 256 colors mode.  Use the
  276.    following steps to change the screen resolutions or number of colors:
  277.  
  278.    a) Open 'OS/2 System' icon.
  279.    b) Open 'System Setup' icon.
  280.    c) Open 'System' icon.
  281.    b) Select the 'Screen' tab.
  282.    e) Select the desired resolution and number of colors from the list.
  283.    f) Double click on the system menu icon or select close from the system
  284.       menu to close the window.
  285.    g) Shut down and restart your system.
  286.  
  287. NOTE:    Changing Refresh Rates
  288.  
  289. When changing refresh rates of 640x480 resolution using the mach64
  290. installation diskettes from a DOS full screen window, the computer freezes
  291. up.  IBM OS/2 must use 60 Hz VGA frequency since it sets the registers
  292. directly.  This is a design limitation of OS/2 and only applies to the
  293. 640x480 resolution. Other resolutions may be configured at any vertical
  294. refresh rate.
  295.

  299.  
  300. 6.0     Installation Notes for Windows NT
  301.  
  302. Windows NT drivers are included on Disk #2 of this package.  They are
  303. located in the \NT sub-directory.
  304.  
  305. Procedure:
  306.  
  307. 1) Run the Windows NT Setup program located in the Program Manager, Main
  308.    group.
  309.  
  310. 2) Select Change System settings, from the Options pulldown menu.
  311.  
  312. 3) Select Other, from the display options.
  313.  
  314. 4) NT will prompt you for the correct path, enter A:\NT, where A: is
  315.    the drive containing mach64 disk #2.
  316.  
  317. 5) A list of all ATI Graphics Accelerator drivers will appears, select
  318.    the resolution and color depth desired.
  319.  
  320. 6) Restart Windows NT.  Windows NT will start up using the mach64 drivers.
  321.  
  322. Note: If you select a color depth or resolution not supported by your
  323.       card, NT will substitute 640x480, 256 color for the display.

  328.  
  329. 7.0     VESA Support
  330.  
  331. The VESA modes supported by your mach64 card are dependent upon the amount
  332. of video memory and the monitor type selected in the ADVANCED or QUICK SETUP.
  333. To determine the modes supported by your current configuration you must
  334. install the mach64 utilities, then run VESATEST from the mach64 directory.
  335.  
  336. 1) Run INSTALL and select "Utilities Installation" from the Main Menu.
  337. 2) Follow the screen instructions to completion.
  338. 3) When INSTALL is finished copying all necessary files, press <escape> to
  339.    exit install.
  340. 4) Change directory to the mach64 (default) directory and type "VESATEST".
  341. 5) All the modes currently supported will be displayed.

  345. 8.0     Reporting Problems
  346.  
  347. If you experience any difficulties, open the file REPORT.TXT and complete
  348. the Problem Report form.
