  1. Back in the olden days, even before the steam-powered
  2. locomputer, all the real heroes were explorers who
  3. blazed trails and sent their ships over the far
  4. horizon (and didn't fall off), then came back with
  5. spices and postcards and mugs that said, "My friend
  6. visited the New World, and All I Got Was This Mug!"
  7.   
  8. GEnie has pretty well been explored and settled by
  9. now, but there are probably a great many places that
  10. you haven't seen. So, this month, let's spend some
  11. time talking about exploring and navigating GEnie.

  13. Keywords
  14.   
  15. One of the most popular questions we handle in
  16. GENIEus, the GEnie Users' RoundTable, always starts
  17. out with, "Hey, how do I get to...?" Sometimes folks
  18. have actually been there at least once, but have
  19. forgotten where they saw a particular Bulletin Board
  20. discussion, Library file or menu item. They're often
  21. surprised to find that simply typing a keyword will
  22. whisk them past all of the many levels of menus to
  23. the main door of a RoundTable or product. But it's
  24. usually just that simple.

  26. Try it sometime when you're online. If you want to
  27. visit the Amiga area, you don't HAVE to know its
  28. GEnie page number. You don't have to descend through
  29. several levels of menus from Page 1 to the Computing
  30. section and so on. You can just type the keyword
  31. AMIGA.

  33. To make this process even easier, GEnie is adding the
  34. capability of associating multiple names or
  35. (key)words with various RoundTables and online
  36. products. So, even if you don't pick "the" word
  37. associated with a RoundTable, you have a much better
  38. chance of picking "a" word associated with it.

  40. For example, you can reach the Macintosh RoundTable
  41. by typing either the keyword MAC or the keyword
  42. POWERBOOK at any GEnie prompt. Still, not every word
  43. you might associate with a place is going to work.
  44. While FABIO may be what you think of when it comes to
  45. Romance novels, it may not be designated as keyword
  46. for online navigation just yet. Try ROMANCE, GOTHIC
  47. or PUBLISH and see what happens.

  49. Move Using Page Numbers

  51. Now, if you DO know what GEnie Page number something
  52. is on, you're even better off. GEnie has standardized
  53. most of the menus for RoundTables. Menu item 1 is
  54. always the Bulletin Board. Menu item 2 gets you into
  55. the Real-Time Conference area, and menu item 3 takes
  56. you into the Library. From there you're on your own.

  58. Chat Lines is set up a little differently, but if
  59. someone says, "They're talking about it in the Auto
  60. RoundTable's Bulletin Board," and you know that the
  61. Auto RoundTable is on GEnie Page 755, you can type
  62. M755;1 (the M stands for Move) and not only be taken
  63. to the Auto RoundTable, as you would if you'd typed
  64. its keyword, but straight into its Bulletin Board
  65. (menu item 1) by typing that single command. Type
  66. M440;3 and you'll find yourself in the WRITERS
  67. RoundTable Library the same way.

  69. You don't HAVE to know GEnie Page numbers in order to
  70. get around on GEnie, but if you do, it can save you a
  71. lot of time (and money) instead of ever-nested menu
  72. items. Everything on GEnie appears on a menu,
  73. someplace, but you don't have to stick to menus if
  74. you know where you want to go.

  76. Slash Commands

  78. These commands should get you from wherever you are,
  79. to wherever you need to be without any trouble. The
  80. only exceptions to that are gateway menus, such as
  81. OAG or Dow Jones, and when you're moving from within
  82. a Real-Time Conference area or Chat Lines.

  84. Remember that all commands in Conferences and Chat
  85. Lines start with a slash, first, as a means of
  86. indicating to GEnie that what you're typing is in
  87. fact a command, and not text. That is, if Larry is
  88. leaving the Conference and you type BYE, then Larry
  89. will think you're bidding him goodbye. If, however,
  90. you type the slash command /BYE then GEnie will close
  91. out that online session for you, and take you
  92. offline.

  95. Just as with the early settlers, you may find that
  96. exploring GEnie is easier, safer and more comfortable
  97. at first if you stick to the trails that are provided
  98. -- the menus. But don't be afraid to strike out on
  99. your own from time to time, too. There's a whole
  100. world out there on GEnie just waiting for you to
  101. explore.
