- Everyone over the age of five knows that those jolly
- fellows in red suits ensconced in shopping malls at
- Yuletide are Santa's helpers, so it should come as no
- surprise that Santa gets assistance from people all
- over the world.
-
- As you might imagine, when GEnie offered to help with
- our business correspondence a few years ago, Santa
- accepted with alacrity. He had long been dismayed
- that the staggering number of letters we get each
- year from our very best customers -- children, of
- course -- by necessity, would go unanswered. Even
- with the help of dozens of elves, there are only so
- many hours in the day, so Santa immediately realized
- that GEnie's offer was the perfect solution to that
- problem. I remember his reaction well.
-
- "Ho, ho, ho!" he chuckled, when he read GEnie's
- letter. "Just what I need in this day and age -- a
- way to enhance my computer literacy quotient and
- answer all these letters!"
-
- So, being the great delegator he is, Santa promptly
- turned the details over to me, and GEnie began what
- has become an extremely popular annual event. With
- your participation, it promises to be merrier than
- ever in 1994.
-
- Letters From Santa
-
- No longer must letters to Santa Claus go unanswered
- -- at least not on GEnie. Some people can only
- complain about computers, but I'll tell you what:
- with the price of postage being what it is today, it
- is thanks to technology that we are able to
- accomplish this feat.
-
- Rather than sending old fashioned, pokey regular
- mail, any time before December 20th, children (with
- assistance from their parents, of course) can send a
- Christmas letter to SANTA.CLAUS via GE Mail. Children
- whose parents use Aladdin or one of GEnie's Front End
- programs can even compose their letters off-line. A
- day or two after their letter is sent, that child
- will receive a personal response from Santa that was
- carefully, even lovingly, written by one of his
- Helpers on GEnie.
-
- This year, Santa's Helpers on GEnie, who hail from
- all over North America, are already enthusiastically
- planning for another deluge of letters. "Christmas
- just wouldn't be the same for me now," observed one
- Helper recently, "if I couldn't play Santa Claus."
-
- No Canned Replies
-
- Replying to letters children write to Santa requires
- creativity, sensitivity, judgement, and speed -- and
- Santa's Helpers on GEnie are volunteers who are
- choosen because they have these skills. Our goal is
- to send replies within 48 hours, so that no child
- will be dissappointed by a delay.
-
- Some children tell Santa in excruciating detail what
- they want for Christmas, while others ask for things
- that touch the heart. Like this letter, which is
- representative of one we received last year:
-
- ┌───────────────────────────────┐
- │ │
- │ Dear Santa, │
- │ │
- │ All I want for Christmas │
- │ this year is for mommy and │
- │ daddy to get back together. │
- │ │
- │ Love, │
- │ /signature/ │
- │ │
- └───────────────────────────────┘
-
-
- Other youngsters have asked for their baby brother to
- get well, and for people stop killing each other.
- It's letters like these that remind us of the
- importance of families and world peace -- especially
- for our children.
-
- On the lighter side, we've also heard from the guy
- who wants a girlfriend and the girl who wants a
- boyfriend, and although it's tempting to play
- match-maker, Santa's Helpers send copies of those
- letters to Cupid for later action.
-
- Serious thought goes into every reply, no less so
- when the letter looks like a stock list for Toys R
- Us, or includes things we've never heard of. Santa
- oftens says he will leave the child a special treat
- and try his best to fill his or her wishes, but he
- also sometimes reminds them that there are many other
- good boys and girls to take care of besides them.
-
- When, for example, a child mentions Santa's elves or
- reindeer, he may reply with fanciful elven details or
- some tidbit like Rudolph loving chocolate chip
- cookies. There is no such thing as a "canned" reply
- from Santa; each and every letter receives personal
- attention.
-
- Most importantly, Santa never makes promises. He
- addresses subjects the child introduced in a creative
- way and is always encouraging, often reporting that
- he has found the child's name on his Good list, and
- adding how proud he is of them.
-
-
- Our goal for Letters From Santa is to make your child
- feel special. On behalf of Santa Helpers on GEnie, I
- invite you to help your little one write to him this
- year. We pledge to respond quickly, carefully and
- sincerely.
-
- And when that much longed-for night finally arrives
- and Santa stocks his sleigh, we'll make certain that
- he hasn't promised anything you can't deliver.

- Holiday Goodies on GEnie
-
- GEnie has some great holiday files you can download
- -- I know because I just checked. Those files
- described below include advice for selecting gifts,
- tasty seasonal recipes, several heart-warming
- stories, music, animation, and even some desktop
- publishing clip art.
-
-
- If you can't decide what to get for someone, some
- seriously helpful advice on how to select appropriate
- gifts is available in File 1023 GIFT.TXT in the
- Family and Personal Growth Library.
-
- A humorous Christmas animation guaranteed to lift
- your spirits can be found in File 677 CATNAP.ZIP in
- the Multimedia Library. CATNAP is an Autodesk FLIck
- file; players for that format are available for
- MS-DOS in File 1305 FLIVOC.EXE, Microsoft Windows in
- File 1301 VIDVUE31.EXE, Macintosh in File 1300
- IMAGERY 1.9 SEA, and Amiga in File 1328
- AMIFLICK202.LHA.
-
- That Ghostly little book, "A Christmas Carol," as
- Charles Dickens referred to it in 1843 when it was
- originally published, is available in its entirety
- from the SFRT3 Library in File 2074 XMASCARL.ZIP.
- It's a joy to meet the real Ebenezer Scrooge, Tiny
- Tim, and Marley's Ghost after seeing so many
- interpretations of this spirited tale, not to mention
- realizing how timely those characters still are 150
- years after the book was written.
-
- Marley's famous visit aside, it doesn't seem logical
- that ghosts would have an affinity for Christmas. But
- if you haven't seen Tim Burton's movie "The Nightmare
- Before Christmas" -- and especially if you have --
- visit the Showbiz Library and get Bill Warren's
- article in File 2260 NIGHTMARE BEFORE XMAS. You'll
- discover fascinating background details that will
- please you almost as much as the movie pleased Bill.
-
- Another classic story, O. Henry's "Gift of the Magi,"
- is available in the Germany Library in File 559
- MAGI.TXT, with versions in both English and German.
- Another thought provoking tale, published originally
- in the March 1990 issue of Amazing Stories magazine,
- was uploaded by its author, Mike Stackpole, to the
- SFRT1 Library in File 1239 THE FINAL GIFT, also in
- plain text.
-
- Seasonal ASCII graphics and the lyrics to many
- popular Christmas carols in addition to Clement
- Clarke Moore's hugely popular poem, "The Night Before
- Christmas," can be found in File 4652 GFXCAROL.TXT in
- the History Library. Clip art to illustrate Moore's
- turn of the century favorite is available in
- WordPerfect Library Files 1381 CAVOL188.ZIP, 1385
- CAVOL190.ZIP, and 1397 CAVOL189.ZIP, in images that
- can be converted to other desktop publishing file
- formats. There's also a beautiful decorative
- Christmas TrueType font there in File 3553
- BSXMASS.ZIP.
-
- If your system can play General MIDI files, the music
- standard that makes sure the proper instruments are
- used (available in most newer IBM-compatible sound
- cards and music synthesizers), you'll definitely
- enjoy the medley of Christmas carols in File 7278
- XMAS_GM.ZIP from the MIDI Library. But don't stop
- there; search that Library using the term Christmas
- for a list of music files that probably includes
- every holiday song you've ever heard, many in GS or
- GM (which indicates General MIDI) format.
-
- Equally appropriate as gifts and for entertaining,
- the Food and Wine RoundTable Library has two files of
- Christmas recipes that vary from cookies to more
- elaborate delights. Download File 684 CHRISTMA.ZIP
- (compressed) or 2073 CHRISTMA.TXT, and File 700
- WHCOOKY.ZIP (compressed) or 2465 WHCOOKY.TXT.
-
- Lastly, last November's (1993) LiveWire -- the
- premiere multimedia issue -- has some fine Christmas
- music, graphics and stories. And it's still available
- for downloading free of standard connect charges at
- up to 2400 baud on evenings, weekends, and holidays
- from the LiveWire Library. Select library menu option
- 8 to set to the sublibrary for your platform (IBM,
- Macintosh, or Amiga). Then select menu option 2 for a
- directory of files that will include the November
- 1993 issue. You will not be charged standard connect
- fees while you are in that Library.
