  1. Scene: Santa's Workshop. A worried reindeer watches
  2. a glum Santa as a nerdy-looking elf (imagine one
  3. drawn by Gary Larson) enters and addresses Santa.

  6. ELF: Hey, big fellow, what's with all the glowering
  7. and grimacing? You're supposed to be the monarch of
  8. mirth and merriment. That long face will never do
  9. for Christmas.
  10.   
  11. SANTA: Oh, my aching head! How I miss the days when
  12. kids asked for bicycles, tin soldiers, teddy bears,
  13. and Raggedy Andy and Ann dolls. Even when they
  14. started asking about GI Joe soldiers and Barbie
  15. dolls, I could handle it.
  16.   
  17. But now it's Macintoshes and PowerPCs, adventure
  18. games and arcade games, CD-ROMs and synthesizers.
  19. How am I ever to make sense out of all this
  20. computer-age jargon?
  21.   
  22. Hey, who are you, anyway? I don't remember you
  23. around here before.
  24.   
  25. ELF: Easy there, Santa baby. I'm Mack the GEnie
  26. cyberelf, here to rescue you from CPU chaos and
  27. application anxiety. Let's just set up this PowerPC
  28. right here on your desk. GEnie's already set up an
  29. account for you, and I'll show you how to log in --
  30.

  35. SANTA: Whoa, hold your reindeer a moment, young
  36. feller! What's this "GEnie" business -- have you
  37. wandered into the wrong fable or something?

  39. CYBERELF: No, no, Santa, GEnie's just the hottest
  40. stop on the Information Superhighway, the place
  41. where you'll find all your Macintosh computer
  42. answers as well as a zillion spiffy GIFS and gifts.
  43. For example, take a look at those flashing Christmas
  44. tree lights right under your menu bar, available as
  45. 31220 XMAS LIGHTS.SIT.

  47. SANTA: I think I'm suffering from sensory overload.

  49. CYBERELF: Funny you should mention that. Take a look
  50. over here in the Mac RoundTable Library, Santa: We
  51. have a demo version of SENSORYOVERLOAD in File
  52. 33062, a rootin', tootin' game that lots of people
  53. would just love to find in their stockings this
  54. Christmas. Or how about File 33174 SIDEMINDER
  55. V.1.03.SIT? Blocks are plunging all around you while
  56. you quickly position and rotate them so they land in
  57. orderly rows. Of course, you also have to avoid
  58. falling bombs and other catastrophic objects
  59. descending at the same time.

  61. SANTA: How about a nice quiet game of solitaire to
  62. soothe my shattered nerves?
  63.   
  64. CYBERELF: No problemo, Kris, we'll just download
  65. 33061 SOLITAIRETILLDAWN2.0 -- which has just about
  66. every game of solitaire there is, in both color and
  67. black and white.
  68.   
  69. REINDEER: Hey, wait a minute -- if Santa's giving
  70. away all these games, his phone's gonna be ringing
  71. off the hook from people who get stuck and want
  72. help.

  74. CYBERELF: Not to worry, antlered one. Wander with me
  75. right over to the Bulletin Board -- let me see --

  93. easier (as a little smile begins to crinkle the
  94. corners of his mouth, he begins softly humming
  95. "Jingle Bells.")

  97. CYBERELF: Music! Ah, yes, we mustn't forget music
  98. for the holiday spirit. Grab hold of File 25797

  100. chock full of favorite Christmas carols.

  102. SANTA: I hate to admit it, Cyberelf, but this GEnie

  108. SANTA: Come closer, so I can whisper in your ear. I
