- Scene: Santa's Workshop. A worried reindeer watches
- a glum Santa as a nerdy-looking elf (imagine one
- drawn by Gary Larson) enters and addresses Santa.
-
-
- ELF: Hey, big fellow, what's with all the glowering
- and grimacing? You're supposed to be the monarch of
- mirth and merriment. That long face will never do
- for Christmas.
-
- SANTA: Oh, my aching head! How I miss the days when
- kids asked for bicycles, tin soldiers, teddy bears,
- and Raggedy Andy and Ann dolls. Even when they
- started asking about GI Joe soldiers and Barbie
- dolls, I could handle it.
-
- But now it's Macintoshes and PowerPCs, adventure
- games and arcade games, CD-ROMs and synthesizers.
- How am I ever to make sense out of all this
- computer-age jargon?
-
- Hey, who are you, anyway? I don't remember you
- around here before.
-
- ELF: Easy there, Santa baby. I'm Mack the GEnie
- cyberelf, here to rescue you from CPU chaos and
- application anxiety. Let's just set up this PowerPC
- right here on your desk. GEnie's already set up an
- account for you, and I'll show you how to log in --
-
- [Editor's Note: To see a GIF of Santa at his
- computer, download 31290 SANTA AT THE COMPUTER from
- the Macintosh Library.]
-
- SANTA: Whoa, hold your reindeer a moment, young
- feller! What's this "GEnie" business -- have you
- wandered into the wrong fable or something?
-
- CYBERELF: No, no, Santa, GEnie's just the hottest
- stop on the Information Superhighway, the place
- where you'll find all your Macintosh computer
- answers as well as a zillion spiffy GIFS and gifts.
- For example, take a look at those flashing Christmas
- tree lights right under your menu bar, available as
- 31220 XMAS LIGHTS.SIT.
-
- SANTA: I think I'm suffering from sensory overload.
-
- CYBERELF: Funny you should mention that. Take a look
- over here in the Mac RoundTable Library, Santa: We
- have a demo version of SENSORYOVERLOAD in File
- 33062, a rootin', tootin' game that lots of people
- would just love to find in their stockings this
- Christmas. Or how about File 33174 SIDEMINDER
- V.1.03.SIT? Blocks are plunging all around you while
- you quickly position and rotate them so they land in
- orderly rows. Of course, you also have to avoid
- falling bombs and other catastrophic objects
- descending at the same time.
-
- SANTA: How about a nice quiet game of solitaire to
- soothe my shattered nerves?
-
- CYBERELF: No problemo, Kris, we'll just download
- 33061 SOLITAIRETILLDAWN2.0 -- which has just about
- every game of solitaire there is, in both color and
- black and white.
-
- REINDEER: Hey, wait a minute -- if Santa's giving
- away all these games, his phone's gonna be ringing
- off the hook from people who get stuck and want
- help.
-
- CYBERELF: Not to worry, antlered one. Wander with me
- right over to the Bulletin Board -- let me see --
- ah, yes, here we are, Category 5, Topic 13: THE
- UNIVERSAL HINT SYSTEM. You'll find a listing of a
- whole slew of hint files for many of the most
- popular Macintosh games, carefully sequenced (to
- avoid spoiling games) from gentle nudges to entire
- solutions.
-
- And while we're on the subject of support, make sure
- you remind everyone you visit to drop by the
- Macintosh Product Support RoundTable at GEnie Page
- 606. You'll find knowledgeable
- direct-from-the-vendor support from companies like
- Alladin, DayStar, Berkeley, Fifth Generation,
- Mirror, Now, and Supra, to name just a few.
-
- SANTA: Well, I must admit, you do seem to be on to
- something here that might make my life a little
- easier (as a little smile begins to crinkle the
- corners of his mouth, he begins softly humming
- "Jingle Bells.")
-
- CYBERELF: Music! Ah, yes, we mustn't forget music
- for the holiday spirit. Grab hold of File 25797
- CAROLSTACK.SIT, a plum pudding of a HyperCard stack
- chock full of favorite Christmas carols.
-
- SANTA: I hate to admit it, Cyberelf, but this GEnie
- place may just have the answers to my Christmas
- computing dilemmas. But there's one last thing --
-
- CYBERELF: Yes?
-
- SANTA: Come closer, so I can whisper in your ear. I
- don't want to say this out loud where everybody can
- hear me. (Whispers to Cyberelf.)
-
- CYBERELF: Ah! Yes! GEnie has the answer to that,
- too. Just check out Library File 25515.
-
- [Editor's Note: What is Santa's secret dilemma?
- What's the solution in the GEnie Macintosh Library?
- You'll just have to go check out file number 25515
- for yourself. Happy Holidays to all!]
