  1. Imagine an entire metropolitan library packed into
  2. a box sitting on your desk. Think your desk could
  3. hold it? Since you're reading this on a screen, you
  4. know the answer is yes, because the box is your
  5. computer, and the library comes through GEnie's
  6. Reference Center.

  8. You can spend hours in a library sometimes looking
  9. for a specific piece of information. On occasion,
  10. after that long search you find out it just doesn't
  11. exist! Or if it does, it's only available at some
  12. other library.

  14. Check Out Your Library
  15.   
  16. With Reference Center, you quickly find out what's
  17. available and how to find it, and you can get a lot
  18. of the information in full-text right there online.
  19. Reference Center covers all major subject areas
  20. including science, history, medicine, education,
  21. art, literature, business, computers, technology,
  22. and more. Think of Reference Center as the
  23. reference section of a library.

  25. A computerized online librarian called KNOWBOT acts
  26. as your guide. Tell KNOWBOT about the topic you're
  27. researching; it will do the searching for you. It
  28. reads every article in the database and, in effect,
  29. responds with "Here's everything I could find about
  30. your topic. Tell me if it's what you're looking
  31. for."

  33. KNOWBOT displays a list of the subject areas where
  34. it found a match with your topic, along with the
  35. number of occurrences it found in each. You can
  36. then ask KNOWBOT for more information about what it
  37. found. It will display article headings in sets of
  38. up to ten, most recent first. You can then select
  39. specific headings and KNOWBOT will retrieve the
  40. full-text articles or abstracts, whichever are
  41. available in electronic format. You complete your
  42. search in a matter of seconds instead of spending
  43. frustrating hours at the library.

  45. On some occasions no full-text or abstract is
  46. available online. In these cases a full
  47. bibliographic citation is shown so you can locate
  48. the original publication in a traditional library
  49. setting.

  51. Remember that Reference Center is a GEnie$Premium
  52. service, so there are charges in addition to
  53. connect time, mostly per-search charges. Be sure to
  54. check the rates listed right on the main menu.
  55. KNOWBOT keeps you posted with a running estimate of
  56. your charges (not including connect time) so you're
  57. never surprised by your bill. And to help you learn
  58. your way around the Reference Center, it is
  59. available to you during October for HALF PRICE.

  61. Reference Center comprises copyrighted databases
  62. made available by Dialog Information Services,
  63. Inc., and is offered through GEnie via Advanced
  64. Research Technologies' ARTIST(R) Gateway System. To
  65. get to Reference Center, enter M1260 or the keyword
  66. REFCENTER at most any GEnie prompt.

  90. which make up GEnie's Reference Center.

  92. With thousands of publications, bibliographic
  93. citations and summary records available and the
  94. potential costs involved, you'll want to put a
  95. little thought into your search BEFORE you access
  96. Reference Center.

  98. Searches in Reference Center are performed against
  99. full records, so your search term needs to be
  100. specific enough to find the information you want
  101. while being broad enough to ensure you retrieve all
  102. pertinent information.

  104. Look Carefully
  105.   
  106. For example, if you wanted to find information
  107. about World War II in the Pacific Ocean, your first
  108. inclination might be to search on WORLD WAR. If you
  109. do, you'll end up with matches for World War I and
  110. World War II; a lot more than you want.
  111.   
  112. Narrow your search somewhat by using both WORLD WAR
  113. and PACIFIC. This would cut out a lot of "noise" in
  114. the search results, but you would still get
  115. information covering the entire Pacific theater.

  117. Think about it first. If what you're really looking
  118. for is information about the bombing of Pearl
  119. Harbor, use search terms like PEARL HARBOR. The
  120. articles Reference Center finds using these search
  121. terms will tend to be more focused and therefore of
  122. much greater value to you.

  124. Reference Center uses the same interface as the
  125. other ARTIST systems on GEnie, so you can quickly
  126. learn to navigate it and become a true Information
  127. Artist.
