  1. What's hot this summer? Everything -- especially in
  2. August during GEnie's month-long, 5th Annual Hot
  3. Summer Nights Celebration! You won't have time to
  4. hit every special event, so here's a survey of
  5. spots that are sure to sizzle. Some of these events
  6. are free of standard hourly connect charges -- and
  7. ALL of them are hot stuff!

  9. Electronic Togetherness
  10.   
  11. One of the things that sets GEnie apart from the
  12. crowd is its feeling of community. This is
  13. especially true in August when everywhere you look
  14. RoundTables are working together on combined
  15. projects.
  16.   
  17. The disABILITIES RoundTable leads the pack as it
  18. co-hosts events with two different partners. To
  19. start off the festivities, disABILITIES joins
  20. PetNet in hosting two Real-Time Conferences on the
  21. theme of working dogs and other animals. The first
  22. Conference is on August 1 starting at 9:00 PM
  23. Eastern time in Pet-Net and features Christie Hill,
  24. who trains dogs for a number of special needs. The
  25. second Conference is on August 2 at 9:00 PM Eastern
  26. in disABILITIES, with guest Brad Scott, Training
  27. Director for Leader Dogs for the Blind.

  29. Next, disABILITIES and the Law RoundTable are
  30. co-hosting Real-Time Conferences on the Americans
  31. with Disabilities Act. The discussions take place
  32. on August 16 (in Law) and 18 (in disABILITIES)
  33. beginning at 9:00PM Eastern time.
  34.   
  35. The Astrology and New Age RoundTables are throwing
  36. a birthday bash for their head sysop, Ed Perrone.
  37. In honor of Ed's birthday on August 16, Astrology
  38. and New Age are asking for volunteer readings from
  39. various disciplines, including Tarot, I Ching,
  40. Channeling and everything else. Special topics for
  41. these birthday readings have been arranged in the
  42. Bulletin Board on both RoundTables.
  43.   
  44. "Fall Projects Around Your Home" is the subject of
  45. a Real-Time Conference hosted by the Family and
  46. Personal Growth RoundTable and the Home Improvement
  47. RoundTable. Start planning those fall projects
  48. around the house with help from the pros. The
  49. discussion will begin on August 9 at 10:00 PM
  50. Eastern time in the Family RoundTable.

  52. If all that at-home planning makes you want to get
  53. out and see the world, you can do that on GEnie,
  54. too -- at least virtuallly. For example, the Food &
  55. Wine RoundTable's Great GEnie Barbecue Challenge
  56. continues through August, with recipes from across
  57. the country being posted to all of the following
  58. RoundTables: Food & Wine, USA East, USA West, and
  59. USA Midwest. And if all this talk about food makes
  60. you thirsty, stay a while in USA East, where you
  61. can join in a Real-Time Conference about microbrew
  62. beers of the eastern US, co-hosted by the Zymurgy
  63. RoundTable. This Conference will take place on
  64. August 11, and a second discussion will be held on
  65. August 13 starting at 10:00 PM Eastern in the
  66. Zymurgy beer hall.

  68. The final, definitive joint venture is taking place
  69. in the Deutschland RoundTable on August 6 at 6:00
  70. PM Eastern. The topic of discussion is "the British
  71. Meet the Germans," where they will discuss their
  72. attitudes toward each other. Of course, Americans
  73. are invited to join in, too!

  75. Sizzling Special Guest Stars
  76.   
  77. The Computer Game Design RoundTable is hosting a
  78. discussion with computer game writer/designer
  79. Christy Marx, whose computer game credits include
  80. CONQUEST OF CAMELOT and CONQUEST OF THE LONGBOW.
  81. Whether you have a question for Christy or you just
  82. want to hear about her experiences writing for
  83. computer games, comics, toy companies, television,
  84. and movies, feel free to drop in on August 14 at
  85. 8:00 PM Eastern time.

  87. Another writer will be visiting the Internet
  88. RoundTable toward the end of the month. IDG author
  89. Charles Seiter will be online to discuss his new
  90. book and give away autographed copies! Check the

  94. On August 9, the Multimedia, Desktop Video &
  95. Virtual Reality RoundTable welcomes Julia Lacey.
  96. Julia is an expert on Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, a
  97. debilitating condition that afflicts many computer
  98. users. All regular computer users should be sure to
  99. attend this conference which starts at 10PM Eastern
  100. time, to learn how to protect themselves from this
  101. crippling syndrome.

  103. The New Age RoundTable welcomes two guest speakers,
  104. both specialists in their fields. On August 2 at
  105. 10:00 PM Eastern, meet Ellen Cannon Reed, author of
  106. THE GODDESS AND THE TREE and other books. Ellen
  107. will give an introduction to the Witches' Tarot and
  108. discuss her new work in progress. On August 17,
  109. talk with well-known palmist John Riggs. John
  110. offers an introduction to palmistry.

  112. Hot Contests
  113.   
  114. The American West RoundTable is having an upload
  115. contest with Gifts of Time as prizes. If you have a
  116. vacation image, a story of your vacation trip, or
  117. any other pertinent files, upload them to American
  118. West to put yourself in the running.

  120. Drop in on the GEnie Chat Lines to enter the
  121. Marathon Trivia Contest on August 6 from 6:00 PM to
  122. 6:00 AM Eastern Time on Channel 38. Prizes range
  123. from a $50.00 Gift of Time to a "Total Nerd
  124. Handbook." Also, every Tuesday night in August is
  125. Speedword Marathon Night. The object of this fast
  126. and furious game is to guess who your partner is.

  129. The Disney RoundTable has two contests of its own.
  130. The first is a Design Your Roller Coaster contest
  131. using Disney Software's Coaster program.
  132. Contestants upload their own roller coaster designs
  133. and submit them to the Disney Software Library to
  134. be judged by none other than Disney Software
  135. itself. And the Disney RoundTable will be hosting
  136. their Hot Summer Nights '94 Disney Real-Time
  137. Conference Trivia Contest from 10:00-11:00 PM
  138. Eastern time on the first four Monday nights in
  139. August. The top places in both contests from each
  140. night will advance to a "Lightning Round" on August
  141. 29 at 10:00 PM Eastern, when the grand prizes will
  142. be awarded. Prizes for all these events include
  143. GEnie Usage Credit, Disney Software Packages,
  144. Complimentary Dinners for two and stays at several
  145. Walt Disney World Resorts.

  147. The Family and Personal Growth RoundTable is
  148. hosting a summertime scavenger hunt and Software
  149. Library contest. One of the Library contests is a
  150. Baby Photo GIF ID contest, in which members try to
  151. identify scanned photos of staff members and
  152. others. Prizes are in GEnie Usage Credit. Family is
  153. also hosting a Real-Time trivia contest on August
  154. 10 starting at 10:00 PM Eastern time.

  156. August 16 is the night to play the Cyberspace
  157. Trivia Challenge in the Multimedia, Desktop Video &
  158. Virtual Reality RoundTable. Exciting prizes will be
  159. awarded to the winners, including copies of several
  160. new books, some of which include CDs and disks. Be
  161. there at 10:00 PM Eastern time sharp.

  163. "Warmed by the Summer Sun" is the theme of this
  164. year's photo contest in the Photography and Video
  165. RoundTable. Entries may be made either by mail or
  166. Library upload with the grand prize being $100 in
  167. cash! You might also want to stop by the Archive
  168. Photos Library, where a weekly contest is held. The
  169. object? Identify an image of a famous person. See

  173. want to check out one of the following events (or
  174. both!). August 20 at 10:00 PM Eastern is the time
  175. for beer games! Try winning a free hour in the

  178. could finish out the month with the NeedleArts
  179. trivia contest, taking place on August 31 at 9:30

  190. Tuesday startin at 10:00 PM Eastern time. Topics
  191. include: "On Vacation with the Comic Strips" (How
  192. do you ski wearing an unstable molecule bikini?),
  193. "Super-heroes Go to the Beach" (Ever tried to get a
  194. tan in an armored power suit?), "Super-heroes Go to
  195. the Mountains" (Is Spandex thick enough to ward off
  196. mosquitoes?), and more. Check the Comics RoundTable
  197. for schedules.

  199. Got something you want to sell? Then be sure to
  200. visit the Home Office/Small Business (HOSB)
  201. RoundTable's Online Trade and Craft Show. Instead
  202. of putting your wares or sales literature out on
  203. tables, you'll put descriptions of what you sell in
  204. Bulletin Board topics arranged by product and
  205. service types. For example, there are topics for
  206. jewelry, quilts, medical professionals, publishers,
  207. and much more. In addition, two full categories
  208. have been set aside for listings according to
  209. geographic region to help people who want to shop
  210. locally. There's even a place in the Software
  211. Library for you to upload pictures of what you
  212. sell. If you don't have things to sell, just drop
  213. by for a little shopping!
