- It starts the minute we're born. We learn to
- breathe, we learn to eat; we learn to walk, run,
- play, think and communicate. Our entire life is an
- ongoing education. We are students in the school of
- existence, undergraduates in the university of
- living. Experience is our teacher and the world is
- our classroom.
-
- For many of us, education is purely academic: we
- need it, but it isn't a lot of fun. But when
- learning is enhanced with personal interest, it
- becomes a dynamic educational experience. Allow me
- to illustrate.
-
- Learning To Fly
-
- Imagine the thrill of learning to fly; then extend
- that vision and imagine training to be a combat
- pilot, flying vintage WWII and Korean war aircraft.
-
- It's all possible in Air Warrior, GEnie's popular
- multi-player air combat simulator.
-
- Novice pilots can join the Flight Training Academy
- to learn basic combat maneuvers from veterans,
- practice their newly-acquired skills in the
- Training Arena and confidently take to the skies in
- either European or Pacific theatres to try their
- luck against other pilots. All without risk of life
- and limb, or ever leaving your house.
-
- Students can also benefit from training in
- classical games of skill and chance.
-
- RSCARDS gives you the resources to learn how to
- play poker, blackjack, backgammon or bridge; or
- develop your skills in chess or checkers. Whether
- you pick one or try them all, you'll receive
- invaluable instruction in the venerable art of
- interpersonal competition.
-
- Thinking On Your Feet
-
- The ability to think on your feet is something that
- is also best enhanced through experience. NTN
- Trivia affords students the opportunity to practice
- their intellectual reflexes by matching wits with
- people from all over North America. Topics and
- subjects are widely varied, making the game
- interesting, unpredictable and infinitely
- challenging.
-
- No degree in advanced living is complete without
- History. As a subject, it can be a bit dry and
- impersonal; as a game however, it can be highly
- educational.
-
- The Hundred Years' War on GEnie gives students the
- rare opportunity of actually participating in an
- historical event. Assuming the role of a character
- who actually lived in 14th century Europe, you'll
- learn about managing fiefs, quelling rebellions and
- dealing with betrayal. You'll gain intimate
- experience in the nuances of medieval romance,
- marriage and divorce, and get a first-hand look at
- medieval politics and military tactics.
-
- Back To the Future
-
- Perhaps you're more interested in the future than
- the past. If so, Federation II will give you the
- opportunity to learn all about interplanetary
- trade, galactic exploration and exploitation.
-
- Like everything else in life, you start small and
- work your way up to big. In Federation II, however,
- big includes building and designing your own planet
- and becoming the Emperor of the Galaxy!
-
- Along the way you're going to learn a lot about
- trade, finance, and politics, how to pick up
- valuable information in bars and how to form
- profitable alliances. Whether you join the Senate,
- form your own Duchy or become Emperor of the
- Galaxy, you'll have a ball taking this course!
-
- If your interests lean a bit to the aggressive
- side, you can extend your education to include
- conquest and colonization in Galaxy I, Stellar
- Emperor or Stellar Warrior. Fleet deployment,
- resource allocation and tactical maneuvers are only
- a few of the various subjects available in this
- particular curriculum.
-
- That Old Black Magic
-
- Finally, who could resist taking one or two courses
- in ancient lore, magic and mysticism?
-
- To acquire this invaluable experience, students are
- encouraged to journey to the lands of Kulthea in
- Gemstone III. There, you can train to be a mage or
- sorcerer, a fighter, ranger, thief or bard. You
- will learn the nuances of magic, the value of armor
- and the importance of weapons in a land populated
- by incredible creatures, possessed of great wealth
- and visited by fabulous quests.
-
- If more exotic races and arcane magic appeals to
- you, a journey to the world of Dragon's Gate may be
- in order. There, students can experience life as a
- dragon, a flying humanoid, a giant arachnid, or
- even a huge cat while studying unusual religions,
- unique weapon skills, and powerful rune magic.
-
- Of course, for those who prefer magic over might,
- Orb Wars offers a special course in the arcane
- arts, where students can learn the skills of six
- separate disciplines -- Alchemist, Conjurer,
- Enchanter, Illusionist, Necromancer or Sorcerer.
-
- And for those who feel the need for pure adventure,
- Island of Kesmai and MUD II provide an excellent
- opportunity to practice the fine arts of dragon
- hunting, dungeon mapping, and puzzle solving.
-
- A Real Education
-
- In the university of life, learning is a requisite
- to success and happiness. GEnie students enjoy the
- added advantage of the new online Virtual Reality;
- by incorporating the element of play into our
- curriculum, we soon learn that playing games can be
- a real education.
