- Summer is just about over which means that school
- will be starting in a week or three wherever you
- live. Are you ready for it? The ST Roundtable can
- help you get ready while not making you feel like
- you started classes early.
-
- To begin with, most educational programs are the
- "drill & practice" type, and while they're
- effective, they can also be boring and seem
- entirely too much like studying. Folks on the Atari
- ST RoundTable who really care about kids think they
- have a better idea: Programs that encourage
- creativity in an open ended fashion.
-
- Great Educational Downloads
-
- Several new educational programs in the ST Library
- are particularly unlike school. "Its All Relative"
- has released their first educational title, "Art
- For Kids" (demonstration version AFT_STE.ZIP in
- File 32842). This is a great example of a program
- especially designed to capture childrens'
- attention. Unlike some others, Art For Kids lets
- you incorporate sounds with drawings for a
- multimedia experience -- a dynamite combination
- that offers excellent value in terms of
- price/performance and educational content. Check
- this demo out and see if you don't agree that Art
- For Kids is the best ever.
-
- Not to be outdone, D.A. Brumleve, creator of such
- educational classics as Kidgrid (File 3073) and
- Kidpublisher has introduced a brand new program
- called MathArt that combines geometry and string
- art to give your student a uniquely interesting
- educational experience that doesn't seem like
- lessons. Look for more information on MathArt in
- Category 29, Topic 6 (The ST and Education) on the
- ST Bulletin Board.
-
- And don't overlook other new shareware and freely
- distributable offerings in the ST Library. Spider
- Spell (File 24338) has received accolades as a
- really good spelling teacher. Others uploaded
- recently include File 32448 HOOKMATH.ZIP, 29316
- NUMBRS10.ZIP, and several files by Vince Baggetta
- (BAGET) in his long running Eliemouse series. In
- any event, consider downloading File 33230
- _CHILDRN.ARC, a complete listing of every file in
- the Library concerned with kids and education. You
- will doubtless find just the right program for the
- subject you wish to learn or teach.
-
- Stars, Music, and Games in Disguise
-
- Summer is a great time to learn about things like
- Astronomy. Several good programs are available in
- the ST Library to aid you in this pursuit. For
- starters, get STERNBLD.LZH (Files 21969 and 21970)
- or PLANETAR.ZIP (File 28160). Either will help you
- identify the marvelous constellations you see in
- the clear summer skies.
-
- Some of the most effective educational programs
- around are actually games in disguise. For example,
- the objective of File 15311 SCRAM.ARC is to
- unscramble a mixed up cartoon -- never mind the
- fact that your child is also building his reading
- vocabulary. Another good one is PARLOR12.ARC (File
- 26295), an insect matching game for children aged 3
- through 8. Wouldn't you rather have them match bugs
- in the computer instead of bringing real ones into
- the house? For kids who absolutely refuse to have
- anything to do with things that appear
- intellectual, there's OUTOFTHS.ZIP (File 32449), a
- typing program cleverly disguised as a brainless
- arcade shoot 'em up.
-
- The ST has always been known as a great music
- machine. It's no surprise that there are a number
- of programs in the Library for learning about
- music. For adults, File 14967 GUI_DEMO.LZH teaches
- guitar while File 12172 MIDILESN.ARC addresses the
- intricacies of MIDI. Younger musicians should check
- out AIKEN6.ARC (File 8108), KIDNOTES.ARC (File
- 2901), and KIDPIANO (File 2871), all written by
- D.A. Brumleve.
-
- Real-Time Learning
-
- Don't forget the ST RoundTable's three weekly
- Real-Time Conferences (RTCs). Monday is desktop
- publishing night with host Lou Rocha. Everyone is
- welcome to drop by and learn or teach a thing or
- two since there are always a few avid DTP
- enthusiasts about. Wednesday is our general RTC
- night, usually with a special guest from the Atari
- community, hosted by Brian Harvey. Check the front
- door and page banners for upcoming guests. Sunday
- is Help Desk night hosted by Mike Allen. Anything
- you'd like to ask about your Atari computer or
- navigating GEnie is fair game!
-
- Have a great summer -- what's left of it -- and let
- the ST RoundTable ease you and your kids back into
- the mood for learning.
