- When August hits the calendar, everybody knows that
- summer vacation is winding down, and it's time to
- start thinking about going back to school. The good
- news is that the A2 and A2Pro RoundTables provide
- many educational resources to help teachers,
- students, and parents alike get back in the groove.
-
- For educators, we provide shareware and public
- domain programs sure to enhance your computer's
- usefulness in the classroom. We have grade books,
- word processors, keyboarding exercises, clip art
- and other kinds of graphics, and hypercard stacks
- on many subjects. Examples of files you should
- consider downloading include:
-
- Gradebook.2, in Files 13128, 13129, and 13131, is
- a stand-alone gradebook program.
-
- Grade Book Reporter, File 11137, an Appleworks
- grade book template.
-
- Computer Keyboarding 5, Files 22358, 22359, and
- 22360, a program by Charlie Hartley that teaches
- computer keyboarding. A2's own Doug Pendleton and
- Pat Kern highly recommend it.
-
- Hyperstates, File 10099, a hypercard stack
- provides geographical information on U.S. States.
-
- Identify the Presidents, File 20437, describes a
- president and asks for his identity.
-
- Astronomer GS V2.3.2, Files 19439, 19347, 19317,
- 19316, 19315, 19300, 19299, 19297, and 19296, is a
- very nice IIgs Astronomy program.
-
- Early Math Regrouping, File 15494, is an early
- math regrouping program.
-
- Early Math Regrouping, File 15493, is another
- Early math regrouping program.
-
-
- If you're anticipating returning to school later
- this month or next, and would like to brush up
- some, check these files in A2's Library. They'll
- get you in the mood:
-
- Physics Notes, File 19751
-
- Chemistry Notes, File 19750
-
- Astronomy Notes, File 19748
-
- Algebra 1 & 2, File 18133.
-
- State Capital Quiz Stack, File 13429
-
- Parents of younger children are invited to look
- through library, too. You'll find many games and
- programs to aid in early childhood learning. For
- example:
-
- Toddlers Disk, File 18553, a toddler and preschool
- game room disk.
-
- Bunny Game, File 17118, a cute 8-bit game for
- preschoolers.
-
- Only a sampling of the educational files available
- in A2 are shown above. An extensive list of files
- is available by searching Library 51 or by using
- EDUCATION as the keyword to search the entire
- Library.
-
- And if you have a favorite program, template, or
- hypermedia stack you think others might find
- useful, please upload it to A2. We welcome stacks
- in Hyperstudio, Hypercard, and Tutor-Tech formats.
-
- Ps, Qs and As
-
- Feel free to bring your educational questions to
- Bulletin Board Category 15 in A2. Educators and
- other concerned parties are invited to discuss ways
- to squeeze the most benefits from using Apple II
- computers in the classroom. Many educators frequent
- this Category as well as others on A2 and A2Pro.
-
- Is your Apple II acting strangely (or maybe not
- acting at all) after its idle summer? A2 is the
- place to see about getting it revitalized. We have
- some of the best hardware support available
- anywhere. Doug Pendleton and Harold Hislop, A2's
- hardware experts, visit the Bulletin Board every
- day, fielding hardware questions ranging from
- adjusting the speed of a disk drive to how to chase
- away SCSI gremlins, and even tips on building a
- tower-cased GS that's fully decked out!
-
- A2 University
-
- If you're interested in learning to how to write
- programs, perhaps to create your own educational
- materials, we invite you to attend A2 University in
- the A2 Pro RoundTable where programming classes are
- held periodically. The A2Pro Library contains
- lessons and transcripts of all preceding classes
- should the one you're looking for be
- out-of-session. Check out this resource for help in
- learning to program.
-
- Real-Time Hardware Trouble-Shooting
-
- Each Wednesday from 8:00 PM through 1:00 AM Eastern
- time, you'll find a Hardware Conference taking
- place in Room 1, hosted by A2's hardware experts.
- Yes, real-time hardware support is a reality, and
- for only the cost of connecting to GEnie! No
- question is too simple or complex for these folks,
- and answers are provided at a level you can
- understand, be that in layman's terms (reducing
- technical jargon to a level that casual users can
- understand is our specialty), or undiluted tech
- talk. Harold and Doug have over 40 years experience
- in electronics between them, so don't be shy.
-
-
- The International Computer Owners Network's (ICON)
- summer conference, popularly known as Kansas Fest,
- took place July 21 through 24 in Kansas City,
- Missouri. It was largely an Apple II conference,
- although all major brands of computer were
- represented. The many seminars presented were of
- great help to those educators in attendance. If
- you're a teacher who wants to know more about using
- the Apple II in your classroom, this is an
- excellent resource. Maybe we'll see you there next
- year!
