- One would think that merely buying and figuring out
- how to use any computer, even an Amiga, might be
- enough of a learning experience. The happy truth is
- that it doesn't end there. What you have in your
- hands is a tool, an exceptionally powerful tool,
- capable of moving Heaven and Earth (or at least
- their graphic representations!) with a four-voice
- orchestral background. And what better use for such
- power is there than education?
-
- Educational Fun
-
- HYPRTSTS.LHA, File 20470 in the *StarShip* Library,
- is a multiple choice test maker. It utilizes the
- Hyperbook interface from Gold Disk to let you
- create tests in a variety of subjects and
- categories, all of your choosing. It's all
- point-and-click, and there's help available to
- assist you with the operation of this program. What
- you get, when you're all done, is an attractive 3-D
- interface complete with spiffy transitions between
- "pages" that will make your tests fun to take as
- well as educational. Note that you'll need ARexx.
-
- File 22570 CORRECTORDER.LHA is a program in a
- similar vein. This Helm "book" (which requires
- either Helm itself or HelmBrowser in File 22575)
- lets you construct tests that "drill students on
- the order of events, tasks, etcetera." Like most
- Helm books, its interface is entirely
- point-and-click. The tests that come with it
- include U.S. Presidents, events in English history,
- population of U.S. cities, and even the lengths of
- various species of whales! It's a fun way to learn,
- and you can make as many of your own lists as
- you'd like. If you have Helm, this book, by Helm's
- author, Jerrell Nickerson, also serves as a
- mini-tutorial for that commercial program.
-
- An older file you may have overlooked in the
- *StarShip* Library is File 14194 WORLDDBANK.LHA.
- This is a large file (703744 bytes) but you get a
- lot. The program (three in all, actually) takes
- data developed by the CIA and graphically plots the
- world. The original database is large at over 100
- megabytes, so you'll probably find this distilled
- version more comfortable. The three programs
- include two spherical views of the Earth (one
- requires a math co-processor) and a cylindrical or
- flat view. They all feature adjustable latitude
- and longitude settings, and the cylindrical view
- lets you adjust magnification, from 1 to 40 times!
-
- WorldDBank is a great way to put our planet into
- perspective and prove to your friends whether New
- Zealand really is smaller than Great Britain. (It
- isn't.)
-
- As long as you have a map of the world, why not
- grab some information to enhance it?
- AMIGAWORLD20.LHA in File 21856, is chock-full of
- data on the countries and territories of the world,
- and lets you select which regions you want on your
- list (America, Europe, Asia, and so on) as well as
- how you want your list sorted -- by population,
- name or area. It's freeware, but $20 will get you
- the registered version with extra goodies.
-
- While we're turning this into a geography class,
- don't miss Walt Meyers' stunning Director
- presentation entitled FACTFLAGS.LHA in File 22201.
- This nifty bit of work gives you everything -- a
- map of the world, facts and figures for each
- country, AND the country's flag. What's more, there
- are two parts to this program. The first lets you
- select a country, and presents information about
- that country. The second part, though, is a quiz. A
- country is located on the map, its flag is shown,
- and you get to select the proper country name from
- a list of five. A running tally is kept so you can
- see how well (or poorly) you're doing. One word of
- warning: Director programs do not get along with
- Workbench 3.0 well, if at all.
-
- Learning Experiences
-
- Closer to home, you'll find Robin Evans -- the
- *StarShip*'s ARexx Guru -- teaching an ARexx class
- in CALC. (Robin's AREXXGUIDE2_0A.LHA, File 22836,
- is is the ARexx study guide for the class.) And
- coming this summer, Robin will be conducting an
- Internet class that he says will "provide an
- overview of resources available on the Internet and
- a brief look at the tools used to access them."
- Head for CALC on GEnie for details.
-
- When Robin isn't conducting CALC classes, he's a
- regular in the *StarShip*. And he's not the only
- one. The *StarShip* community is filled with
- experts in every facet of the Amiga, as well as
- people who only know a little but want to learn
- more. No matter what our individual level of
- knowledge may be, we always end up learning from
- each other. We may live thousands of miles apart or
- inhabit the same block, but when we're in the
- *StarShip* we're all on common ground. And that, my
- friends, is one of the greatest learning
- experiences of them all.
