  2. or swimming lessons, and you can't get hurt if you
  3. do something wrong.

  5. Welcome to the New Member Practice RoundTable! This
  6. new practice area has been provided so that GEnie
  7. members just like you can get experience using
  8. common RoundTable features. What's more, all the
  9. major areas of the Practice RoundTable -- the
  10. Bulletin Board, Real Time Conference, and Software
  11. Library -- are free of standard GEnie connect
  12. charges. Simply type PRACTICE (or M1485) at any
  13. GEnie page prompt to check it out.

  15. Practice Bulletin Board
  16.   
  17. First on the Practice menu is the Bulletin Board,
  18. which is full of informative topics about using
  19. GEnie. The topics are actually mini-tutorials,
  20. featuring brief but thorough explanations of just
  21. about anything most people will ever want to do
  22. online. In these topics you can learn how to
  23. navigate GEnie, use GE Mail, enter messages on a
  24. Bulletin Board, participate in a Real Time
  25. Conference (RTC) or Chat Line (and understand Chat
  26. Line lingo!), upload and download files, get
  27. involved in online games, send FEEDBACK to GEnie,
  28. and more.

  30. Category 6 provides a place where you can put into
  31. practice what you learn about using Bulletin Boards.
  32. You can post messages there and even start your own
  33. topics. A welcome feature of this Category is that
  34. even if you make a mistake, nobody will ever see it;
  35. when you leave the Bulletin Board, all of the
  36. messages you posted in the Practice Category are
  37. deleted.

  39. The Scary Stuff: RTCs and Downloading
  40.   
  41. The other two practice areas are sure to be welcome
  42. to anyone who wants a low-risk way to learn the ins
  43. and outs of Real-Time Conferences and Software
  44. Libraries. (They're probably also welcome to those
  45. of us who have always wanted to get some practice at
  46. one of these but never had a chance, other than
  47. learning it the "hard way.") 
  48.   
  49. The Real-Time Conference practice area lets you hook
  50. up with a member of the GENIEus HelpDesk staff for a
  51. live, online conversation. You can do this just for
  52. practice, or you can take advantage of the staff
  53. member's presence by asking questions you may have.
  54. (DISCLAIMER: The HelpDesk staff might not know the
  55. answers to trivia questions. They will, however, be
  56. able to help you with questions about GEnie.)

  58. The Practice Software Library is the place to
  59. experiment with downloading files from GEnie, or
  60. even practice uploading them. A handy file to try as
  61. a first download is file #1 MANUAL.TXT. This is the
  62. GEnie User's Manual, which certainly deserves a
  63. place in the top 10 most useful files on all of
  64. GEnie.

  66. Not Just For Beginners
  67.   
  68. The New Member Practice RoundTable has plenty to
  69. offer veteran members, too. For one thing, there may
  70. well be information available in the Bulletin Board
  71. or Software Library that could make a seasoned
  72. user's on-line time even more productive. (Let's
  73. face it--how many of us really read instruction
  74. manuals? There are tidbits hiding in there meant to
  75. make life easier!) Also, the Bulletin Board goes
  76. beyond the basics; it includes lists of advanced
  77. commands, including how to effectively use the
  78. powerful GE Mail Command Mode.

  80. The Sysops also recommend two other sources of
  81. general information and assistance for users new and
  82. old: the GEnie Online Manual (accessed by typing
  83. MANUAL at any page prompt) and the GENIEus
  84. RoundTable (type GENIEUS or M150).

  86. Practice to your heart's content on GEnie now,
  87. without worrying about standard connect charges
  88. during evenings, weekends and holidays. Just type
  89. PRACTICE to get started!
