- In all the world, do you know of anything that
- works as well as GE Mail?
-
- You can send a letter to just about anyone, any
- time you want. It goes out to them instantly, and
- they can read it whenever it's convenient -- even
- days later. You don't have to have the correct
- postage, or even a stamp, don't have to place it in
- a certain box by a given time, and they don't have
- to wait around for anyone to deliver it.
-
- What's really great is that now people don't even
- have to be bonafide members of GEnie to receive GE
- Mail, since we're connected to the Internet -- and
- you can even send GE Mail to someone who has only a
- fax machine! All you need is their Internet
- address, that curious collection of @-signs and
- dot-coms or dot-edus, or the telephone number of
- their fax machine.
-
- GE Mail
-
- Electronic mail is a means of sending a file to a
- specific person or group online. You can send GE
- Mail to one person, or to dozens, with a single
- keystroke. Most commonly, GE Mail is a letter from
- one person to another, but other people are
- frequently listed on the CC line (Carbon Copy, from
- the days of the steam-powered office, or Courtesy
- Copy, here in the '90s). It is even possible to
- send computer files via GE Mail. These can be
- programs, data files, templates or graphics.
- Anything that can be stored on a hard or floppy
- disk, can be sent to someone else via GE Mail.
-
- Bulletin Board messages are as convenient, but
- anyone can read them, and not everyone should.
- Conversations in Chat Lines or Real-Time
- Conferences (RTCs) can be more private, but you
- both have to be online at the same moment for that
- to work, so it's not as convenient. Libraries are
- more permanent, but they're not at all interactive.
- So for many kinds of personal communications, GE
- Mail is the perfect alternative.
-
- The simplest way to use GE Mail is to send or
- receive a letter from GEnie page 200 using menu
- options 2 and 6, a reasonable facsimile of which is
- shown below. You can also write a letter using your
- favorite word processor, save it as an ASCII text
- file, and upload that file with menu option 7 --
- although you need to make sure your BREAK key
- setting is coordinated with GEnie to do so. And you
- can elect to read only mail from a certain user, or
- from a given date with GE Mail options 4 and 5. But
- the real Power Users online use GE Mail's Command
- Mode. Command Mode enables you to do all kinds of
- interesting things.

- GE Mail Command Mode, option 9, allows you to
- fine-tune your mailings. You have greater control
- over both who sees your mail and how you see the
- letters in your GE Mailbox. You can forward letters
- to people who haven't seen them, copy one letter
- into another one and even change your mind and
- cancel a letter you've already sent. We teach
- regular classes on GE Mail in the GENIEus HelpDesk
- RTC; if you're interested in the nuts-and-bolts of
- GE Mail, you'll want to attend one of those classes
- soon.
-
- With options 11 and 12, you can send computer files
- via GE Mail. The process is much the same as
- uploading or downloading from a Library, except not
- everyone has access to the file.
-
- Writing GE Mail
-
- GE Mail is really simple. At the TO: prompt, you
- enter the name(s) of the people you want to receive
- a letter. If there are two or more, put a comma
- between the addresses. At the CC: prompt, you enter
- the names of the folks who should receive a
- courtesy copy, again with commas between multiple
- names. The Subject line should be a few words about
- the subject you're writing about. "Can't load 1-2-3
- file" or "We're getting married!" are examples. You
- don't want to give away the whole letter, but you
- want to give someone an idea of what the letter is
- about.
-
- At the 1> prompt, you can enter the body of your
- letter. There are several ways to do this, and we
- won't cover them all here. You should know that
- there are ways to streamline and automate the
- process so you don't have to actually type your
- letter online, although if it's short that may be
- the best solution. Remember, not every technique is
- best all of the time.
-
- GE Mail is a much more informal method of
- communication than paper mail. It can be much more
- immediate and shouldn't be nearly as stuffy as
- regular mail. Spelling and grammar are always
- important, but they're not AS important, when you
- use electronic mail. You wouldn't write "gonna" or
- "sorta" in a regular letter, but they're okay in GE
- Mail, "prolly." For emphasis, you can set off a few
- words in ALL CAPS or with *asterisks* or
- _underlines_.
-
- For best results, keep your letters to one page or
- a couple of screens, and leave a blank line between
- paragraphs, with no indents at the start. In order
- to retain blank lines in GE Mail, put a space or
- two on that line before you press return. And _do_
- make sure you put a return (also known as CR) at
- the end of each screen line, at least before the
- 80th character.

-
- Remember, you can always ask questions about GE
- Mail, or any aspect of GEnie, in the GENIEus
- HelpDesk RTC. Type M150:2 to get there from most
- any GEnie prompt. Watch for an upcoming Real-Time
- Conference with David Angell and Brent Heslop,
- authors of "The Elements of E-Mail Style" from
- Addison-Wesley publishing. We'll have more details
- soon!
-
- If you have questions about GEnie, or suggested
- topics we could cover here, I'd like to hear from
- you. Why not drop me a letter in GE Mail? My
- address online is MARK.HIATT and I try to respond
- within a couple of days.
-
- I hope you'll have a great time online! May all
- your tasks be as easy and reliable as GE Mail.
