  1. The hot night echoed with the sound of laughter and
  2. conversation, the tinkle of ice in glasses, water
  3. splashing over the edge of the pool, and beeps and
  4. explosions from computers.

  6. Beeps and explosions from computers?
  7.   
  8. Yup. It was the GEnie Macintosh RoundTable Fourth of
  9. July Party; Quadras, PowerBooks, Newtons, and
  10. PowerPCs were everywhere. As I glanced at two
  11. figures peering at one of the screens, I did a
  12. double-take! Could it be? How could it be??!!
  13.   
  14. With considerable trepidation I walked over and
  15. said, "Excuse me, but aren't you --"
  16.   
  17. They're Back!
  18.   
  19. The younger of the pair, a tall red-haired man,
  20. looked up and regarded me gravely. "Greetings," he
  21. said. "Thomas Jefferson at your service."
  22.   
  23. "And I'm Ben Franklin," the older man joined in.
  24. With a sly twinkle in his eye, he added, "Tom and I
  25. are very much enjoying the fruits of your modern
  26. technology. Take this desktop publishing business. I
  27. was a printer and publisher, you know, but I never
  28. dreamed of capabilities like this." He waved at a
  29. stack of printouts with fancy fonts and GIFs at me.
  30.   
  31. "Now that I've got myself a Quadra," said Tom, "I've
  32. been checking out your Software Library. I had one
  33. of the best libraries in the colonies, and I can
  34. hardly wait to start adding software to my
  35. collection. I've already updated my system with some
  36. awesome utilities, including File 32169 GLIDEL for
  37. dragging and dropping files, GREG'S BROWSER (File
  38. 32163) for browsing and editing files, and 32085
  39. TECHTOOL for clearing PRAM and rebuilding my
  40. desktop."

  42. "And don't forget 32197 INFO ALLEY, Apple's new
  43. support newsletter, 32164 CHIRON, an encyclopedia of
  44. bombs, bugs, and hints, and 32099 JPEGVIEW, a fast,
  45. flexible JPEG/GIF viewer," Ben reminded him.

  47. The Boston Bunch

  49. As we were talking, someone exclaimed, "By Jove,
  50. just the thing to throw in my saddlebag when I go on
  51. a campaign!" I looked over to see none other than
  52. George Washington himself, examining a PowerBook.
  53. "But what's this, Henry?" he asked, pointing at
  54. nearby screens where computer games were raging
  55. away.
  56.   
  57. Henry Knox, Washington's chief assistant who would
  58. later become the first Secretary of War, looked up
  59. from the screen. "General, this is 32166 RESCUE.
  60. It's a battle game based on some kind of starship.
  61. Just the thing for teaching our troops tactics that
  62. will definitely confuse the Redcoats. And that," he
  63. pointed, "that's 32088 ASTERAX. They tell me it's an
  64. Asteroids/Maelstrom-like game, whatever that means.
  65. All I know is that it's lots of fun."
  66.   
  67. Suddenly, I heard Tom shout, "Ben! What on earth are
  68. you doing?" Looking over, I saw that Ben had
  69. wandered over to the LiveWire Swimsuit photo shoot.
  70.   
  71. "Look at this, Tom," Ben said as we approached. He
  72. had borrowed a camera from one of the photographers
  73. and, after examining it briefly, was trying it out
  74. on the models. "Thought I should get some GIFs for
  75. our library," he explained. "Most fun I've had since
  76. I was in France," he added with a wink.

  78. "Um, sir, you don't have to get quite THAT close to
  79. make it work," the photographer cautioned.

  81. Modern Contraptions

  83. "Come on, Ben, enough of that," said Tom, nudging a
  84. reluctant Franklin away. "I was just talking about
  85. the Software Library."
  86.   
  87. "Oh, yes, most excellent," said Franklin. "What I
  88. like is how economically and conveniently you can
  89. update your commercial applications. Penny saved is
  90. a stitch in time, you know, or something like that.
  91. I forget after 200 years. For example, just this
  92. month they've added patches for PAGEMAKER (File
  93. 32079), FILEMAKER PRO (32078), FAXSTF (32056), and
  94. COLOR IT! (32055)."

  96. "Look at this! It reads my handwriting," I heard
  97. another voice cry. I looked up to see John Hancock
  98. brandishing a Newton with his trademark signature
  99. blazoned across the screen.

  101. "If you're taken with that contraption, be sure you
  102. check over on GEnie Page 1540, where you'll find all
  103. sorts of Newton files and information," Ben advised
  104. him.
  105.   
  106. Just then I heard the sound of guitars tuning up.
  107. "Come on, boys, it's time to shake a leg," I heard
  108. George cry. "Paul Revere's going to play for us.
  109. He's got a band called the Raiders or something.
  110. Let's see if this guy can do anything besides gallop
  111. and yell."
