- The hot night echoed with the sound of laughter and
- conversation, the tinkle of ice in glasses, water
- splashing over the edge of the pool, and beeps and
- explosions from computers.
-
- Beeps and explosions from computers?
-
- Yup. It was the GEnie Macintosh RoundTable Fourth of
- July Party; Quadras, PowerBooks, Newtons, and
- PowerPCs were everywhere. As I glanced at two
- figures peering at one of the screens, I did a
- double-take! Could it be? How could it be??!!
-
- With considerable trepidation I walked over and
- said, "Excuse me, but aren't you --"
-
- They're Back!
-
- The younger of the pair, a tall red-haired man,
- looked up and regarded me gravely. "Greetings," he
- said. "Thomas Jefferson at your service."
-
- "And I'm Ben Franklin," the older man joined in.
- With a sly twinkle in his eye, he added, "Tom and I
- are very much enjoying the fruits of your modern
- technology. Take this desktop publishing business. I
- was a printer and publisher, you know, but I never
- dreamed of capabilities like this." He waved at a
- stack of printouts with fancy fonts and GIFs at me.
-
- "Now that I've got myself a Quadra," said Tom, "I've
- been checking out your Software Library. I had one
- of the best libraries in the colonies, and I can
- hardly wait to start adding software to my
- collection. I've already updated my system with some
- awesome utilities, including File 32169 GLIDEL for
- dragging and dropping files, GREG'S BROWSER (File
- 32163) for browsing and editing files, and 32085
- TECHTOOL for clearing PRAM and rebuilding my
- desktop."
-
- "And don't forget 32197 INFO ALLEY, Apple's new
- support newsletter, 32164 CHIRON, an encyclopedia of
- bombs, bugs, and hints, and 32099 JPEGVIEW, a fast,
- flexible JPEG/GIF viewer," Ben reminded him.
-
- The Boston Bunch
-
- As we were talking, someone exclaimed, "By Jove,
- just the thing to throw in my saddlebag when I go on
- a campaign!" I looked over to see none other than
- George Washington himself, examining a PowerBook.
- "But what's this, Henry?" he asked, pointing at
- nearby screens where computer games were raging
- away.
-
- Henry Knox, Washington's chief assistant who would
- later become the first Secretary of War, looked up
- from the screen. "General, this is 32166 RESCUE.
- It's a battle game based on some kind of starship.
- Just the thing for teaching our troops tactics that
- will definitely confuse the Redcoats. And that," he
- pointed, "that's 32088 ASTERAX. They tell me it's an
- Asteroids/Maelstrom-like game, whatever that means.
- All I know is that it's lots of fun."
-
- Suddenly, I heard Tom shout, "Ben! What on earth are
- you doing?" Looking over, I saw that Ben had
- wandered over to the LiveWire Swimsuit photo shoot.
-
- "Look at this, Tom," Ben said as we approached. He
- had borrowed a camera from one of the photographers
- and, after examining it briefly, was trying it out
- on the models. "Thought I should get some GIFs for
- our library," he explained. "Most fun I've had since
- I was in France," he added with a wink.
-
- "Um, sir, you don't have to get quite THAT close to
- make it work," the photographer cautioned.
-
- Modern Contraptions
-
- "Come on, Ben, enough of that," said Tom, nudging a
- reluctant Franklin away. "I was just talking about
- the Software Library."
-
- "Oh, yes, most excellent," said Franklin. "What I
- like is how economically and conveniently you can
- update your commercial applications. Penny saved is
- a stitch in time, you know, or something like that.
- I forget after 200 years. For example, just this
- month they've added patches for PAGEMAKER (File
- 32079), FILEMAKER PRO (32078), FAXSTF (32056), and
- COLOR IT! (32055)."
-
- "Look at this! It reads my handwriting," I heard
- another voice cry. I looked up to see John Hancock
- brandishing a Newton with his trademark signature
- blazoned across the screen.
-
- "If you're taken with that contraption, be sure you
- check over on GEnie Page 1540, where you'll find all
- sorts of Newton files and information," Ben advised
- him.
-
- Just then I heard the sound of guitars tuning up.
- "Come on, boys, it's time to shake a leg," I heard
- George cry. "Paul Revere's going to play for us.
- He's got a band called the Raiders or something.
- Let's see if this guy can do anything besides gallop
- and yell."
