  3. exception. That's where you'll find all the latest
  4. shareware, public domain and commercial demo
  5. programs; tips and advice from other GEnie members;
  6. industry news and rumors -- in short, everything you
  7. need to keep your computer skills up-to-date. What's
  8. more, the IBM-Compatible Computing RoundTables are
  9. simply fun to explore!

  11. Windows RoundTable

  13. Let's start with the Windows RoundTable Software
  14. Library. One of this summer's hottest new movies is
  15. "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues." File 2335 COWJIG.EXE
  16. is a great Windows jigsaw puzzle featuring two
  17. images from the film. One image is the poster art,
  18. and features Uma Thurman hitchhiking on the open
  19. road. The other shows Uma Thurman and Rain Phoenix.
  20. The puzzle has three levels, includes four WAV sound
  21. files, and is lots of fun. The Help File contains
  22. production notes for the film which was directed by
  23. Gus Van Sant, based on the novel by Tom Robbins.
  24. It's a self-extracting archive.

  26. To celebrate the Fourth of July, go back a bit
  27. further in the Windows Library for File 2161
  28. LIBERTY.ZIP, a Windows Help file containing the full
  29. text of the United States Declaration of
  30. Independence, Constitution, and the Bill of Rights.

  32. Other practical Windows downloads include Rummage,
  33. ARISoft Cron - Clock Daemon for Windows, and
  34. HEXpert. Rummage (File 2351 RUMMGE21.ZIP) is a handy
  35. utility for identifying and managing duplicate files
  36. on your hard drive. It's fast and simple to use.
  37. ARISoft Cron is available in File 2365 CRON12.ZIP.
  38. It's an event scheduler modelled after the UNIX
  39. daemon of the same name. You can define events which
  40. consist of a command line, WAV file, and/or a text
  41. message to be executed at a future timer or at
  42. regular intervals.

  44. Finally, HEXpert is a powerful tool that allows you
  45. to view and edit binary data in both hexadecimal and
  46. ASCII formats, as well as eight different numeric
  47. formats including signed and unsigned integers and
  48. floating point. Instead of looking for the hex
  49. equivalent of a floating point number, simply view
  50. the data in all formats simultaneously. HEXpert
  51. allows editing, searching, or replacement of data in
  52. any of these formats. It will let you insert and

  86. Wing v1.2, an exciting space flight simulator with
  87. digital sound effects and terrific graphics. It's in
  88. two files, 35610 GW12A.ZIP and 35611 GW12B.ZIP.

  90. File 35596 FIBER11.ZIP is a cool super VGA
  91. screensaver-like program that displays 256 color
  92. graphics in resolutions from 320x200 to 1024x768.
  93. And if the kids are home for the summer, you should
  94. check out Masterpiece Menu in File 35599
  95. MMENU10A.ZIP. Even young children will be able to
  96. run their own software using Masterpiece Menu. The
  97. artist "paints" each program icon on the easel.
  98. Click the easel or press ENTER to run the displayed
  99. program. The large, colorful program icons are
  100. standard PCX files. Setup is a breeze and you can
  101. even have separate configurations so each child can
  102. have his or her own menu. Masterpiece Menu runs in
  103. EGA or VGA mode and includes a "screen saver,"
  104. calendar, and animated clock.

  109. O/S2 RoundTable

  111. The third major IBM-Compatible Computing RoundTable
  112. is the OS/2 RoundTable at GEnie Page 1400 (keyword
  113. OS/2). OS/2 RoundTable's Software Library 25 now
  114. contains the OS/2 for Windows Service Pack (the
  115. Service Pack for full OS/2 installations was
  116. mentioned in the May issue of LiveWire). The OS/2
  117. RoundTable is an official distribution point for
  118. Service Packs and details can be found on the OS/2
  119. RoundTable Bulletin Board. The OS/2 for Windows
  120. Service Pack is in Files 2687-2699 and 2702-2712.

  122. Other files of interest to OS/2 users include File
  123. 2733 PLUMA106.ZIP, a What You See Is What You Get
  124. (WYSIWYG) word processor for the OS/2 Presentation
  125. Manager interface. It doesn't even attempt to go
  126. head-to-head with large, professional word
  127. processors available for OS/2 PM or Windows, but
  128. provides a more modest set of functions.

  130. Schedule-It!, File 2722 SCHED100.ZIP, is a GUI
  131. program for OS/2 that allows you to schedule
  132. different events to run at various times on
  133. different days. And File 2730 XLIST.ZIP (Xlist
  134. v2.17g) provides an integrated platform for file and
  135. directory management.

  137. It's loaded with fine features including directory
  138. tree, user-programmed function keys, fonts, mouse
  139. support, international date support, file locate and
  140. OS/2 support for HPFS. Xlist views ARC, ZIP, ZOO &
  141. LZH archive files directory structures and will
  142. emulate DOS directory structures for ZIP and LZH
  143. archives with embedded pathnames.

  146. JASMRTC.ZIP, a transcript of the Real-Time
  147. Conference where participants discussed plans for
  148. Jasmine/2, an OS/2-based communications front end
  149. being developed by OS/2 RoundTable assistant sysop

  151. the ongoing discussion of Jasmine/2 in OS/2

  157. Mustang RoundTable

  159. Another hot spot in GEnie's IBM-compatible computing
  160. community this month is the Mustang RoundTable at
  161. Page 680 (keyword MUSTANG). Registered users of
  162. Qmodem Pro for Windows can download File
  163. QMWIN110.EXE, which patches QmodemPro for Windows
  164. v1.01 to version 1.10. This works ONLY with the
  165. registered version of QMWIN. Version 1.10 adds fax
  166. printer drivers support so that all Windows
  167. applications can use QMWIN's fax capability for
  168. output, plus SENDFAX, RECEIVEFAX, and other script
  169. commands.

  171. Cyberspace/Multimedia RoundTable
  172.   
  173. To stay current on late-breaking news in commercial
  174. circles, visit the Multimedia/Cyberspace RoundTable
  175. once a week. Published every Friday, Cyberspace
  176. Report is formated in ASCII text so that all
  177. platforms can display it. It features news about
  178. industry trends, newly-released commercial products
  179. (many with working demos or screen shots in the
  180. Cyberspace Library), and suggestions about files to
  181. download. Cyberspace Report Weekly is available on
  182. Menu Option 7, GEnie Page 2000. Monthly compilation
  183. files are stored in the Cyberspace Software
  184. Library.

  186. Two impressive Virtual Reality programs were
  187. recently added to the Cyberspace Library: a 3-D
  188. house and a 3-D art museum, both of which can be
  189. explored -- you guessed it -- in three dimensions.
  190. Commercial demos are well worth the download time.
  191. The 3-D house (be sure to visit the attic) is File
  192. 1025 SEEVREAM.EXE while the 3-D art museum is in
  193. File 1023 ABDEMO.EXE.

  195. Other files of interest in the Cyberspace/Multimedia
  196. Software Library are a group of 19 MS-DOS CD-ROM
  197. player utility programs in File 1027 CD_UTILS.ZIP,
  198. several working demonstration versions of multimedia
  199. authoring programs, a slew of art, animation and
  200. music files. They have all sorts of conversion
  201. utilities to transform or play such files on a
  202. variety of platforms including MS-DOS, Windows,
  203. Macintosh, and Amiga. The Cyberspace/Mutimedia

  207. Microsoft RoundTable

  209. Three new files to help you get the most from your
  210. Microsoft Windows applications can be downloaded
  211. from the Microsoft RoundTable Library at GEnie Page
  212. 505 (keyword MICROSOFT). Advanced users of Microsoft
  213. Excel version 5.0 will want File 5154 VBAPP.EXE, a
  214. Windows help file for Visual Basic Applications. The
  215. help file features full-text search functions. File
  216. 5027 FW1003.EXE is the FoxPro for Windows Resource
  217. Kit, covering a variety of topics including
  218. installing, troubleshooting, debugging, printing,
  219. and networking. Code samples are provided. Finally,
  220. File 5004 WD1015.EXE contains a Word for Windows 6.0
  221. document that describes ways to optimize Word's
  222. performance.
