- They were all by the pool on that 4th of July weekend
- -- George, Paul, Thomas, Benjamin and Betsy. Not a
- Beatles re-union, or wrap party, but something a bit
- more, umm, timely. As in Washington, Revere,
- Jefferson, Franklin and Ross. And no, I wasn't on
- pain medication.
-
- It was the heat.
-
- I watched the sun beat down, producing a golden light
- shimmering off the water which fragmented into a
- thousand shards of brilliance like a Pink Floyd light
- show. They looked out of place in their old-fashioned
- bathing suits -- Betsy Ross inspiring (or was it
- perspiring?) in her red, white and blue outfit -- but
- none of them seemed to mind.
-
- As the sun set, they splashed in the water, jumping
- in and out of the pool. Thomas lost his hat, Paul had
- trouble keeping his lantern lit, and George showed an
- aptitude for launching cannonballs from the high
- board. Ben played with his kite while Betsy lounged
- in her red, white and blue chaise, sipping iced tea
- while mending a large red, white and blue beach towel
- and quietly humming a pop tune. I believe it was
- "Battle Hymn of the Republic."
-
- Time passed quickly, or perhaps I dozed, but soon
- evening settled over the pool and the five friends
- gathered around a nearby table, their conversation
- turning to the greater issue of what to do for fun on
- hot summer nights.
-
- Lively Discussion
-
- I wasn't paying much attention but when I heard "Hot
- Summer Nights" my ears perked up right along with my
- interest. It seems that they had taken to technology
- better than they had to swimming. They knew all about
- computers; Benjamin had introduced them to GEnie and
- the rest was history, so to speak.
-
- What followed was a lively discussion about Bulletin
- Boards and Real-Time Conferences, Libraries and Chat
- lines. They argued every point; debated every issue.
- But one topic soon dominated the conversation, the
- one thing they all agreed on and looked forward to
- every summer -- GEnie's Hot Summer Nights. What they
- couldn't agree about was why they enjoyed it.
-
- Accounting for Personal Tastes
-
- Thomas cited the Writer's Ink RoundTable, pointing
- out that since August is Guest Month, one can always
- count on meeting talented and famous writers.
-
- "Why, in the past two years alone," he exclaimed,
- "Writer's Ink has hosted Real-Time Conferences with
- Tom Clancy and well-known romance writers Patricia
- Coughlin, Holly Newman, and Rebecca Sinclair! And if
- that's not enough to whet your appetite, there's the
- chance to join other authors in open conferences, and
- possibly win a prize or two in a writing
- competition."
-
- Betsy preferred the new Disney RoundTable. Professing
- a passion for fireworks, rides and childhood wonders,
- she maintained that the Disney Trivia Games were the
- highlight of past HSN celebrations. "Two years ago,"
- she reminded them, "when Walt Disney World was part
- of the Travel RoundTable, the grand prize was a
- five-day vacation at the Walt Disney World Buena
- Vista Palace Hotel! And last year they had weekly
- Real-Time Conference Trivia Games for twice the fun
- and twice the prizes. Of course," she added, "winning
- isn't everything. The real fun is playing the games
- and making new friends." Betsy was already planning
- to attend the Disney RoundTable conference this year
- on July 11th at 10PM Eastern time where details about
- this year's HSN events will be announced.
-
- Paul agreed that playing games was fun, but voiced a
- preference for GemStone III's world of multi-player
- fantasy gaming, saying that it appealed to his sense
- of adventure.
-
- "GemStone's month-long Grand Kelfour's Summer
- Festival," he explained, "is a Hot Summer Nights'
- tradition with events like the Gladiatorial Games and
- Merchant Caravans; Torkaan Skinning, Lock Picking and
- Bardic Contests, and the ever-popular GM Dunking
- Booth providing uproariously good fun for all. As if
- that isn't enough, there's the usual mini-quests and
- Open Houses, and my personal favorite -- Kelfour's
- own version of a water-slide -- the Water Tunnel
- Races."
-
- George seemed duly impressed by all of this, yet
- remained committed to his own Hot Summer Nights
- favorite, RSCARDS. While admitting to a love of chess
- and a weakness for RSCARDS' annual August Chess
- Tournament, he professed his greatest passion was
- poker -- possibly a result of his innate talent for
- bluffing.
-
- "RSCARDS gives me ample opportunity to satisfy that
- passion with their Annual Hot Summer Poker Nights
- competition," he explained. "Every Monday night in
- August, players gather to compete and enjoy the game
- with prizes awarded to the top weekly and top overall
- scorers. With the backgammon tournaments, trivia
- contests and other activities on top of that, there's
- little time for boredom."
-
- Benjamin scoffed at the idea of playing games. "I
- enjoy HSN because it gives me an opportunity to meet
- and converse with other adventurous entrepreneurs,"
- he remarked. "While areas like the Genealogy &
- History, Travel, CALC and Food & Wine RoundTables
- pique my interest, my favorite haunt is the Home
- Office/Small Business RoundTable -- particularly the
- Real-Time Conferences with special guests like Hugh
- Roome, publisher of the Home Office Computing
- magazine." He also confessed to a certain fondness
- for conte sts, and spoke eloquently about the virtues
- of HOSB's Great American Productivity Contest, which
- rewards innovators with fabulous prizes.
-
- Just My Imagination
-
- By now the evening had deepened into night, bugs were
- out in full force and everyone heaved a sigh of
- nostalgic longing. Betsy, knitting a huge red, white
- and blue shawl, pointed out that they only had one
- more month to wait for this year's Hot Summer Nights.
- Once again, they all agreed. And I dozed off.
-
- When I awoke, they were gone. I asked around the pool
- about them, but no one admitted to seeing a group of
- people in funny-looking bathing suits.
-
- Some might say it was all my imagination; some might
- say it was a dream. I think it was the heat.
-
- If you think that was hot, just wait until August.
- GEnie's Hot Summer Nights is no dream!
