  1. The word is out. People are crazy for trivia. We
  2. can't seem to get enough of it. With hundreds of
  3. trivialities on the market -- boxed games, bookshelf
  4. games, computer games, pen and paper games, parlor
  5. games -- you'd think we'd get sick of it. But our
  6. appetite just never seems to be satisfied.
  7.   
  8. Scientific studies have shown that indulgence in
  9. trivia has a calming, even soothing effect on minds
  10. that are forced to spend most of the day thinking
  11. serious thoughts about vastly important things. It
  12. seems that after devoting all that energy to solving
  13. problems and fighting traffic, people would prefer to
  14. sit down and lose themselves in something that has
  15. absolutely no relevance.

  17. Of course, it could be simply that we prefer to have
  18. fun.

  20. Playing the Game
  21.   
  22. If fun is what we want, then NTN Trivia (Page 1031,
  23. keyword TRIVIA) delivers.
  24.   
  25. The game is simple; there aren't a lot of complex
  26. rules and strategies to learn before you can enjoy
  27. playing. You can jump in any time and feel right at
  28. home.
  29.   
  30. Each game consists of a series of multiple choice
  31. questions covering a vast array of trivial topics.
  32. Three clues are provided, five seconds apart, and
  33. points are awarded for selecting the correct answer.
  34. The trick, however, is to answer quickly. Points
  35. decrease as time ticks down -- to receive the full
  36. 1000 points for a question, you have only one second
  37. to select the correct answer.

  39. If you answer incorrectly, you're awarded a negative
  40. score. But since you can change your answer as many
  41. times as you like without penalty until time runs
  42. out, it's wise to wait for all the clues to a tough
  43. question rather than make a bad guess.

  45. Trivia in Cyberspace

  47. By itself, NTN Trivia would be a blast. But this is
  48. also a multi-player game. With its live chat feature
  49. you can talk freely with other players during the
  50. game, sort of like a virtual trivia club, where
  51. people from all over the globe are gathered around a
  52. huge cybertable.

  54. The conversations and commentary are stimulating,
  55. entertaining and often hilarious. And you never know
  56. who you might run into. As the game designers point
  57. out, "Not only are you playing against all the folks
  58. on GEnie, during the games marked `national' you are
  59. playing against thousands of other people in bars,
  60. hotels and restaurants across North America who
  61. subscribe to the NTN Interactive Television Network."

  63. In addition to the regular ongoing games, there are
  64. several special weekly games: Showdown, on Tuesdays
  65. at 9:15 PM Eastern time; Sports Trivia Challenge each
  66. Thursday at 9:15 PM Eastern; Nightside, an
  67. adults-only game, runs Wednesday, Friday and Saturday
  68. nights at 1:15 PM Eastern; and Playback, NTN's new
  69. music game (which includes a karaoke round called
  70. "Triviaoke"), plays each Saturday at 10:30 PM
  71. Eastern.

  73. All of the weekly games are a hit with players, but
  74. the most popular by far is Showdown. Played in six
  75. rounds, this is the mother of all the game shows.
  76. Action is fast and furious, questions are tough, and
  77. competition even tougher. But it's a real feather in
  78. your trivia cap if you somehow manage to win.

  80. After each game, scores are displayed and a winner
  81. declared. Following each National game, you'll also
  82. see group and individual rankings which will show how
  83. well the GEnie group fared against the players on the
  84. ITN, and how well you scored against the network as
  85. an individual player.

  87. Looking Good

  89. NTN Trivia now runs exclusively from a beautiful
  90. graphics front-end (FE). Graphics are 16-color
  91. high-resolution, with a standard point-and-click
  92. interface that supports both mouse and keyboard
  93. input.

  95. Questions, multiple choice answers and hints are
  96. displayed in windows along the left side of the
  97. screen; five corresponding answer buttons and a timer
  98. bar occupy the center, while your stats, game scores
  99. and rankings are displayed screen-right. A chat-line
  100. and scroll-back buffer window reside at the very
  101. bottom of the screen.

  103. To play, you simply read the question, check the five
  104. possible answers, and make your selection by clicking
  105. on the corresponding number button. This is almost
  106. too simple. Fortunately, you can monitor and
  107. contribute to the ongoing conversation in the chat
  108. window.

  110. The FE can be downloaded by selecting menu item 6 on
  111. the main menu at GEnie Page 1031. IBM-compatbile,
  112. Amiga, Atari ST and high resolution (640 x 480)
  113. Macintosh systems are all supported. The
  114. self-extracting file makes installation a breeze.

  116. Apprised of the Situation

  118. With round-the-clock games, special weekly game
  119. shows, an interactive multi-player environment and
  120. national score rankings, what more could anyone
  121. possibly want?

  123. Prizes -- Lots and lots of prizes!

  125. "Anytime you play an NTN Trivia or QB1 game here on
  126. GEnie," NTN explains, "you will have the opportunity
  127. of earning prize points in NTN's Player Prize
  128. Program. The points awarded will depend on your
  129. rankings within the game." These points are then
  130. accumulated and applied towards some great
  131. merchandise and awards in NTN's Award Catalog.
