  1. I know I should have been paying better attention,
  2. but it was one of those last minute things. Deb
  3. needed help hanging the 4th of July Weekend banner
  4. over the *StarShip* RoundTable menu, so I volunteered
  5. to help. I climbed almost to the top of the ladder
  6. when I slipped on a disk -- floppy, of course -- and
  7. found myself counting the moons of Jupiter.

  9. Inalienable Rights

  11. Shaking my head a few times to clear it, I looked up
  12. into a group of strangely garbed folks. One of them
  13. extended his hand and asked me how I felt. "Not bad,"
  14. I replied, getting to my feet. "I guess it's my
  15. inalienable right to do silly things."

  17. "Inalienable right? Hmmm... you know, that's exactly
  18. the phrase I've been looking for! Well, perhaps
  19. unalienable rights. I'll let the printer decide. Now,
  20. if only I could decide whether it's 'the political
  21. bands WHICH have connected them' or 'the political
  22. bands THAT have connected them.'" He bowed deeply,
  23. saying "Tom Jefferson, at your disposal!"

  25. I might have found this odd, but I was still a bit
  26. woozy. Tom's companions -- now fascinated by the
  27. stranger they had just encountered -- began crowding
  28. around me. One with white hair and funny teeth spoke
  29. next. "Forsooth, odd stranger. Prithy, tell me if you
  30. will; can this Amiga of which you speak help keep
  31. track of all the messages I get? What with all this
  32. bad business up at Lexington and Concord, I fear
  33. someone may try to reach me while I am out boating
  34. the waters of the Delaware!"

  38. "George, George," I said, warming to the situation,
  39. "I've got just the thing for you. Hop on that white
  40. steed of yours and gallop, do not trot, straight for
  41. the *StarShip* Library where you'll find Advanced
  42. Voice Mail (File 22816 AVM1.19.LHA). It's a shareware
  43. program by Al Villarica that lets you set up a 3-box
  44. voice mailbox system if you have a voice-capable
  45. modem. (Zyxel, Dolphin, and Linelink modems are
  46. explicitly supported.) You can record your own
  47. messages over the phone or with a digitizer, like
  48. Perfect Sound. Need more? How about automatic fax
  49. routing? You get all this for $20 for level 1
  50. version, or $35 for the "deluxe" level 2 version.
  51. Even in 1776, it's a steal!"

  53. George winced at the reference to theft, but pumped
  54. my hand vigorously, thanking me all the while. Then
  55. the sole woman in the crowd spoke up. "My name is
  56. Betsy," she said, "and I've been trying to find just
  57. the right pattern for a flag I've been working on.
  58. I've got a CD-ROM player, and plenty of CDs of clip
  59. art, but I don't have a driver. Can you help?"

  61. "Sure thing!" I said. "What you need to do is
  62. download AMICDROM1_10.LHA in File 22930. AmiCDROM, by
  63. Frank Munkert, is a CD-ROM filing system for the
  64. Amiga that understands ISO-9660, the Rock Ridge
  65. Interchange Protocol, and even Macintosh HFS. What's
  66. more, you can use it to play audio CDs and it even
  67. understands multi-session PhotoCDs. Best of all, it's
  68. Public Domain. Just download it, unarchive it, and
  69. go!"

  71. A bespectacled gentleman stepped forward. I noticed
  72. he was holding a kite, and surmised that he must be
  73. the legendary Ben Franklin, star of stage, screen,
  74. and the cover of ADPro! He spoke to me in hushed
  75. tones, evidently not wanting the others to hear. "I
  76. must confess that I've always wanted to use that
  77. marvelous ARexx language of the Amiga. But I never
  78. got around to learning it!"

  80. Patting him consolingly on the back, I said, "Not a
  81. problem! If you download the ARexx Guide by Robin
  82. Evans (File 22836 AREXXGUIDE2_0A.LHA) you'll find
  83. it's easier than ever to learn! Robin is one of the
  84. resident ARexx gurus in the *StarShip*, and he's not
  85. only written many ViewPort ARexx articles, he also
  86. teaches ARexx in GEnie's CALC classes. His
  87. interactive AmigaGuide tutorial is an invaluable
  88. ARexx reference, as well as an excellent teaching
  89. tool and a stunning example of AmigaGuide formatting.

  95. I was about to tell them about the main *StarShip*
  96. banner that highlights important files and
  97. discussions (something that came in handy when
  98. Commodore announced liquidation) when they all
  99. vanished. Or, more accurately, I woke up.

  103. "Whew!" I said. "I don't know about you, but this has
  104. been one hot summer night!"
