- I know I should have been paying better attention,
- but it was one of those last minute things. Deb
- needed help hanging the 4th of July Weekend banner
- over the *StarShip* RoundTable menu, so I volunteered
- to help. I climbed almost to the top of the ladder
- when I slipped on a disk -- floppy, of course -- and
- found myself counting the moons of Jupiter.
-
- Inalienable Rights
-
- Shaking my head a few times to clear it, I looked up
- into a group of strangely garbed folks. One of them
- extended his hand and asked me how I felt. "Not bad,"
- I replied, getting to my feet. "I guess it's my
- inalienable right to do silly things."
-
- "Inalienable right? Hmmm... you know, that's exactly
- the phrase I've been looking for! Well, perhaps
- unalienable rights. I'll let the printer decide. Now,
- if only I could decide whether it's 'the political
- bands WHICH have connected them' or 'the political
- bands THAT have connected them.'" He bowed deeply,
- saying "Tom Jefferson, at your disposal!"
-
- I might have found this odd, but I was still a bit
- woozy. Tom's companions -- now fascinated by the
- stranger they had just encountered -- began crowding
- around me. One with white hair and funny teeth spoke
- next. "Forsooth, odd stranger. Prithy, tell me if you
- will; can this Amiga of which you speak help keep
- track of all the messages I get? What with all this
- bad business up at Lexington and Concord, I fear
- someone may try to reach me while I am out boating
- the waters of the Delaware!"
-
- Messages and More
-
- "George, George," I said, warming to the situation,
- "I've got just the thing for you. Hop on that white
- steed of yours and gallop, do not trot, straight for
- the *StarShip* Library where you'll find Advanced
- Voice Mail (File 22816 AVM1.19.LHA). It's a shareware
- program by Al Villarica that lets you set up a 3-box
- voice mailbox system if you have a voice-capable
- modem. (Zyxel, Dolphin, and Linelink modems are
- explicitly supported.) You can record your own
- messages over the phone or with a digitizer, like
- Perfect Sound. Need more? How about automatic fax
- routing? You get all this for $20 for level 1
- version, or $35 for the "deluxe" level 2 version.
- Even in 1776, it's a steal!"
-
- George winced at the reference to theft, but pumped
- my hand vigorously, thanking me all the while. Then
- the sole woman in the crowd spoke up. "My name is
- Betsy," she said, "and I've been trying to find just
- the right pattern for a flag I've been working on.
- I've got a CD-ROM player, and plenty of CDs of clip
- art, but I don't have a driver. Can you help?"
-
- "Sure thing!" I said. "What you need to do is
- download AMICDROM1_10.LHA in File 22930. AmiCDROM, by
- Frank Munkert, is a CD-ROM filing system for the
- Amiga that understands ISO-9660, the Rock Ridge
- Interchange Protocol, and even Macintosh HFS. What's
- more, you can use it to play audio CDs and it even
- understands multi-session PhotoCDs. Best of all, it's
- Public Domain. Just download it, unarchive it, and
- go!"
-
- A bespectacled gentleman stepped forward. I noticed
- he was holding a kite, and surmised that he must be
- the legendary Ben Franklin, star of stage, screen,
- and the cover of ADPro! He spoke to me in hushed
- tones, evidently not wanting the others to hear. "I
- must confess that I've always wanted to use that
- marvelous ARexx language of the Amiga. But I never
- got around to learning it!"
-
- Patting him consolingly on the back, I said, "Not a
- problem! If you download the ARexx Guide by Robin
- Evans (File 22836 AREXXGUIDE2_0A.LHA) you'll find
- it's easier than ever to learn! Robin is one of the
- resident ARexx gurus in the *StarShip*, and he's not
- only written many ViewPort ARexx articles, he also
- teaches ARexx in GEnie's CALC classes. His
- interactive AmigaGuide tutorial is an invaluable
- ARexx reference, as well as an excellent teaching
- tool and a stunning example of AmigaGuide formatting.
- The Shareware fee of $15 makes this one of the
- bargains of the century!"
-
- No Illusions
-
- I was about to tell them about the main *StarShip*
- banner that highlights important files and
- discussions (something that came in handy when
- Commodore announced liquidation) when they all
- vanished. Or, more accurately, I woke up.
-
- "Are you all right?" Deb was asking.
-
- "Whew!" I said. "I don't know about you, but this has
- been one hot summer night!"
-
- GEnie's Hot Summer Nights activities during August,
- however, are not illusions.
